Pretty sure Wenger said something similar about players getting caught up in the heat of battle and saying things they shouldn't. He said it should stay on the pitch.

Similar message so are we just taking it out on an easy target?

Unbelievably his apology on the FIFA website seems to have made things worse.

http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/organisation/president/news/newsid=1544067/index.html

First up it was a half hearted 'my comments were misconstrued', yet his clarification of the comments seem to just repeat them. Worse for me is that they headline the apology with a picture of him hugging and laughing with a black man (fuck knows who he is), obviously to show that he isn't racist. He'll probably blacken his face with shoe polish next.

Complete and utter fucking twat.

Edit: I see Rio Ferdinand has referred to the posing with a black man picture as a "face palm" moment.

Whilst Blatter's original comments were completely out of order I do wonder if the backlash against the man is turning into a bit of a media circus, almost vendetta like. The UK media have been waiting to pounce on the bloke and now they have their chance.

Disappointed to read the Prince Philip comparison though, as I do believe most of his ramblings (how do you keep the locals off the booze - to a scottish driving instructor) is said in jest.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/royal-wedding/2011/06/10/prince-philip-quotes-relive-90-classic-gaffes-to-mark-his-90th-birthday-115875-23191024/

Is it really any different from players calling each other fatty or ginger?  I'm in my mid twenties and even when I was in school if you were picked on the answer was to respond with the like.  I can see his point, but he is inept in expressing himself.

I'm not advocating racism, but I can understand the need for banter and stick on a football pitch, and sometimes people will go too far in the heat of the moment.

Unfortunately, I fear I'm going to get flamed as it is socially unacceptable.  But why is racism unacceptable, but calling someone a fat cunt or a ginger nut acceptable?  The only answer I can think of is history, but then is it similarly unacceptable to refer to someone as a Kraut?

Title: Re: sepp blatter

Title: Re: sepp blatter
Post by: walrus on Thursday, November 17, 2011, 09:26:20
Or fattism or gingerism?  ::)

Calling someone a kraut is perfectly acceptable, but a wog not.  What is the distinction?  It's hypocrytical of some of you to condemn Blatter and then in the next post call someone a daft kraut.  It's the same thing surely?  Some might even argue discriminating against the Germans is more loaded due to the history between the two nations.

His comments are out of touch with the real world, the sooner this daft sod buggers off then the better.  The most likely thing though is that this old ballsack will get away with it somehow, someway.

To be fair I can see Walrus point that discrimination is discrimination regardless of whether it is on skin colour or hair colour.

He's missed the obvious point of context though - racism isn't "banter and stick on a football pitch".

Title: Re: sepp blatter
Post by: mrverve on Thursday, November 17, 2011, 10:31:05
What I think he was trying to say was that, making an off the cuff racist comment in the heat of the moment isn't the same as being inherently racist (something which I agree with). He should'nt have said that they should've just shaken hands afterwards and be done with it though. In fact he shouldn't have said anything which could've been taken out of context. Making a racist comment is very serious and shouldn't be taken lightly whatsoever.

Don't think anyone actually thought he would resign over this did they?

We're leading the charge on racism in football and you often feel others don't really give a fuck. You only have to look at the near continual abuse our players face across Europe and the slaps on the wrist given as punishment rather than anything meaningful.

The only reason FIFA speak out against racism is to play the game and because they know they'd be in deep shit if they didn't. Doesn't mean they really want to do anything about it.

This whole event has barely raised an eyebrow in the European press... so this certainly hasn't damaged Blatter in the slightest bit, if anything its made him despise the 'English' that little bit more.

If he can survive his association having corrupt members on his watch a bit of sweeping racism under the carpet isn't going to bother him.

His high (or low) point was getting away with buying votes for the presidency with cash in brown envelopes in plain sight.

Think he explained it as being "an advance of monies due to the associations".

He might be a cunt but he has taken bullet proof to a whole new level. When he retires from FIFA he'll be able to make a fortune advising politicians on how to survive scandals intact.

Whilst I agree with everything that has been said on UEFA and blatter, the issue is a society thing. It was only 20 years ago that we had the bananas and the monkey chants.

We just have to wait for some parts of the world to catch up.

And yes UEFA don't help, perhaps a 3 match fan ban would make these places take notice at least within the football community.

This problem is endemic in the society of these countries. Until you tackle the problem off the pitch you won't get anywhere with fines etc. on the pitch.

Title: Re: sepp blatter
Post by: jonny72 on Monday, November 21, 2011, 16:22:58
Interesting that everyone focuses on the racial element of the Eboue incident and not the more basic fact that missiles being thrown at any player is unacceptable. If that had happened here the ref would have stopped the game solely for safety reasons, no matter what colour the players skin.

A lot of crazy shit goes on with fans in Europe that simply wouldn't be tolerated here. Flares seem a common and accepted part of the game in other countries, yet the shit hit the fan when just one of our fans took one to a game. Yet if you were to ask UEFA I'm sure they'd still say we're the ones with crowd problems.

Why shouldn't he?  As DRS has already said, he was playing right back and taking a throw in.  Ardiles is also right - by staying put its highlighted the incident - which can only be a good thing.  Beyond that - why on earth should he not stay in the same spot?  I'm actually fairly sure this is not what you meant, but it sounds like you think he ought to have moved and this would have prevented the incident continuing.  He was not in the wrong - the ignorant, disgusting racists were.  He is entitled to stand there as long as he wants without being subjected to that filth.

Title: Re: sepp blatter

How do we know that the Eboue incident was racially motivated ? I am in no way defending racism, but all I can see is a player getting pelted with missiles, cant see any evidence that it is purely because he is black. Cant hear any monkey chants, just some crappy guitar music. Every teams supporters often pick on one of the opposition players, sometimes there is history with that player or one bad tackle, or dive, or he just looks a bit shit (quite possible with Eboue!) and the crowd pick up on it and give that player stick. In this country it would be boos, jeers whatever, in Turkey they do as their society sees fit which is to throw things at him. Where is the racist element in this ?
