The Ashes is a specific tradition having nothing to do with Eng v Aus women's tests played in front of a few hundred.
The footballers on the other hand played at a genuine world level in front of huge-ish crowds and tv audiences and overachieved against top competition
I think you're missing the point, how are crowds and enthusiasm supposed to increase if the press don't report on them and try to drum up some excitement?
