As much as J Smith was quality last year, he is a very steady player and competition for his spot is excellent news, after all we want 2 players for each position in a perfect world, we've now got 2 GK, 4 CB, 2 RB and 2 LB, so thats pretty much sorted. 4 CM fine as well, it's just the wings and up top. The thing is, it could just be the order in which we are signing them, come the first game, if we've got the 2 strikers and 2 wingers we need then its all rosy, if we had signed them first, wewould be moaning about a lack of cover at the back
the conclusion to this aimless ramble is that there's still a month unitl the first game, have faith

Proven strikers and wingers are more likely to be expensive to get hold of, meaning you're more likely to want to sift through trialists during the pre-season friendlies. Still early days yet.

J Smith was quality but this new chap has to be better than shakes for cover at RB surely!
Not heard much about Miguel however not ruling out Smith could be covering him.

Sturrock clearly plays football manager. - 2 players for every position - offering trials to random foreigners he's never heard of in the vain hope that one is worth a punt. - Signing too many players - collecting defensive midfielders It all points in the direction of FM

Well considering the competition for places in defence now you would hope that area is sorted and we should be reasonably solid at the back next season.
Now Sturrock can look at what he has in defence and decide what kind of players we need to take the ball off them and produce at the other end. Considering we have 4 weeks until the season starts, I'm quite happy with the way things are going

PS said: "Now we have got to start getting more offensive players in to the club. I always believe you have to build from the back and every position has got competition."
Should put a few "why so many defenders" thoughts to bed.
Have a little faith.
