Title: Swindon v Brentford Official Matchday Thread
Post by: chalkies_shorts on Friday, August 20, 2010, 23:47:17
I'm pissed enough to think I can start this thread and continue to do so as we go on a 44 match unbeaten run. 2-1 Town and hopefully none of the shenanigans the Brentford Massive got up to last season - bloody hooligans.

We are currently in San Diego, so will be missing the game.

Hoping for 3 pts to get our season started, and it would be nice to keep a clean sheet.

Setting off soon after a few cups of coffee and a Norwegian breakfast. I fancy our chances today, the team will be on the up after last weekend's comeback. I'm going for a 2-1 win with goals from Austin and Dossevi.

A good win today to get the season off and running.  Mr Reliable Austin to bag a couple, and Dossevi to continue to impress with a late third in a 3-1 victory.

Oh and Sonic - what's in a Norwegian breakfast?

Back on topic: I reckon a decent game, two good sides. Head says 2-2, heart says 2-1 but it'll be tight for sure.

Never thought I'd say this but would go with vince up top after last week, he really impressed me for the first time ever. Ferry in for Prutton, standard back four and defo persist with AOB, he's getting better and better and is in danger of becoming a good player for us. Dossevi off the bench.

Crazy man.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Morrison start today after all of Danny's talk in the week. I doubt he'll play one up front at home but given Dossevi's goals last weekend and for the reserve, surely he'll start ahead of Vince?

If we can tighten up at the back,i think we can make enough chances for a comfortable 3-0 Austin,Dossevi and Rose. That's a big if though

Good feeling about today. If it helps, I fancied Ally Cook to get a 100 yesterday, so get down Ladbrokes now!

I've gone 3-2 on the Prediction League, but that was most because everyone did 2-1.

I think the mistakes will begin to fizzle out. If we can keep playing the same way we have for the past few games I think we can start winning. It'll be interesting to see what Wilson goes with for this game in terms of the starting line up. I'd like to see a 4-4-2 at home with Dossevi and Austin upfront. Same back 4 for me as well.

2-1 win. Can't really see us keeping a first clean sheet of the new season, but it won't be a mistake that leads to the conceded goal, more of a well-worked Brentford effort.

Austin brace with a Gary Alexander goal sandwiched in between.

1-0 Swindon- Austin

Hoping Rose improves his positioning and fulfills his defending duties.

Would like to see Ferry start over Prutts. However supposedly wasn't great on Saturday.

Austin + Dossy up front.

This year its been the best it ever has, it still cuts out very occassionally but its lovely and clear for me.

Have you checked that you have a. enough memory in the computer, b. that you dont have too many programs running at the same time, c. that you are actually getting the correct connection speeds, as its a Saturday the bandwidth sometimes is lower due to extreme demand.

There are certain empty periods when the BBC is advertising as they arent allowed to broadcast adverts but the rest of the breaks are 90% local on each persons own PC.

I didn't go, but the commentary made it sound (and they're just saying now) that it was actually a good start, totally fucked up by conceding a ridiculous goal. Take a bow Michael Rose.

Yep, been following the Cowboys since the game was first shown on C4.
Have been to Dallas twice and to all 3 Wembley games.

We had our holiday over here planned when the pre season fixtures came out, so we changed the route slightly to come down this far to catch the game. :)

Much the same as previously and starting to get annoying now. Rose is wank and a defensive liability. We lack leadership up front and just seem to be overplaying things. We badically need an experienced leader at the back, a decent left back, a left winger and probably another striker.

Wilsons subs were stupid today and largely killed us as it killed any momentum we did have. I may be the only one that thinks this but the line up that finished that game was fucking stupid and I didn't understand why we'd have such an inexperienced team finishing the game especially down the left where it was Kennedy and Rose.

We miss Amankwaah I think as him and McGovern linking up last season were one of our most effective weapons. Try caddis at left back and get manks back on the right.

Not panic stations but definitely worrying.

You probably are the only one that thinks that as Kennedy came on for Rose. We finished with Kennedy and Ball on the left

Dougie is starting to look like midfield's answer to Big Vince.

After a good start, we were lucky not to lose that, they missed at least two sitters

We were lucky to draw with Brentford missing two sitters, then again we were unlucky not to win. Pericard really should of passed right at the end to Charlie who would of had a certain goal but he was never going to after being told to me more selfish earlier in the week, took a shot from a ridiculous distance as soon as he came on to.

Think Pericard should start next week though, could do with his presence to start off.

calm down Bart.

Today was like those runs of 1-1s we went on last season.

Good start, all Swindon - seemed a matter of minutes before we scored then it would be how many? Michael Rose fucks up big style and Brentford score with their first chance, infact the first time they got within 20 yards of our goal.

All us again and again, looking semi dangerous. We score, all us half time.

Second half all us, all us, all us, all us - Brentford on the counter - all us, all us, all us, all us, all us, all us. Brentford time waste all us - draw.

Subs were odd. Rose going off was obvious. O'Brien I could understand sort of, not sure why he tooks Dossevi off.

Morrison was rock solid and should keep his place, Kennedy did alright when he came on, nice to see after such a long lay off. O'Brien was decent, scared the full back - crossing hit and miss, but very few at this level provided a decent cross every single time. Prutton was very poor first half and does everything at Nalis speed. He was a bit better after his goal but he wasnt good. Surprised he played the full 90.

Ball looked better when he came on, Pericard put in some effort, came to nothing.

We have enough of the ball and enough corners to have run out winners, easily. Brentford however did miss some really easy chances.

Just got in. I thought we played OK today, better than brighton anywho. Morrison and Cuthbert worked well together today I would start with the same two next week. Caddis was decent again although I would like to see him keep the ball on the floor. Rose again IMO was the weak link at the back caught out of position time and time again and his header back to Lucas was truley woeful! When Kennedy came on I thought we looked better. He was more composed on the ball than rose and was comfortable travelling more than ten yard with the ball. Defensivly he was good and certainly looked more solid than rose.

Prutton was alright nothing special took his goal well. Douglas just did his thing but I felt we lacked a bit of spark in the middle. O'brien was dangerous on the break but seemed reluctant to put the ball in early. JPM would have been my MOM constantly wanted the ball and put his all into the game.

Dossevi played well made a few things happen I would have liked him too shoot when he picked up the ball on the edge of the box and passed instead. Austin was really quiet most of the game until mid-way through the second half when he seemd to come to life and had himself a few chances. Ball looked livley when he came as did Pericard.

Toward the end of the game Pericard went on a twenty yard run and spurned his shot when Prutton was well placed in the box to finish! But I suppose if we want pericard to score more then he needs to be selfish!

Overall and improved peformance to that of Brighton. If we can cut out the silly errors then we will do well and probably get a play-off finish this year. Wilson needs to act quickly in the transfer market and bring in an experienced stiker and a leader.

But for Fuck sake we need three Fucking points!!!!

We were lucky not to lose that- with the sitters that Brentford missed- a side with better finishing would have been out of sight by half time.

We badly lack leadership and organisation , Douglas seems to struggle as captain so far and seems unable to perform both roles effectively.

We must add at least an experienced centre half, and sort out the stupid errors. With the current crop i think mid table is the best we can realistically hope for.

And why can we never come back from behind and win, so frustrating.

I think Dossevi had a knock, if not then I really don't know why he came off.

Prutton was awful, reminded me of Nalis - the amount of passes he made backwards and sideways got increasingly annoying as the game went on. Him and Douglas can't play together on that showing - I'd bring Ferry in next week alongisde Douglas.

It's a good job Weston (no 11) has no skill because he was tearing Caddis apart with his pace, better wingers would have punished us. Would like Amankwaah back in there next week.

Morrison was good, hopefully he can build on that if given another chance next week.

Weird game. we bossed it for the main but they had two absolute sitters which they missed.

Morrison was a rock. Caddis looked vulnerable to balls over the top, and they only really attacked the flanks. Attacked them well may I add.

Prutton statred awfully, but by the end was our best player. Hope he continues in that form.

O'Brien looked fast and semi decent. Some good balls into dossevi which he really should have done better with.

Was rose injured?

Don't think he was injured, Dave. Wilson said after the game that he thought he didn't really recover from the mistake and that was one of the reasons he took him off. Also said that his wife gave birth in last couple of days so that may have affected him...

Rose ............. a bit rubbish really

Prutton, a very expensive Nalis.

Centr Mid sits to deep with Prutton and Dougie in there forcing the two wide men inside to support the top two.

Dougie does not look the same player since he has shared the berth with Prutton.

Wilson has a decision to make, either Dougie or Prutton, not both.

Ferry needs to start.

Morrison, very pleased for him - solid

Vinnie was.................... well Vinnie

A mixed bag today...

Negatives first: What on earth was Rose doing? A terrible mistake, and from Lucas' point of view it's disappointing they scored from such a tight angle. Caddis and Rose were both poor defensively, especially in the first half. Meanwhile, we saw very little from central midfield yet again.

On to the positives: Dossevi did well and I was disappointed to see him go off. However, Ball looked dangerous on the left and Pericard did well up front. If he'd put that chance away he'd have been in for a starting place next week. He hassled the defence constantly and did very well to create the opportunity. It was good to see Kennedy back, hoepfully he can kick on from here. However the biggest positive has to be Morrison. Top class today and fully deserved his MOTM award, as well as getting an assist on the goal.

Overall I'm still holding out hope that things will turn around. If we keep playing like that we'll finish 12th-15th, but if we can cut the errors out and look dangerous for 90 minutes rather than in patches then we can at least start to think about the Play-Offs.

Up until Rose's mistake Brentford didn't do anything. They actually looked quite panicky and hoofed a lot to clear their lines. After the error they got into the game and it took us a while to compose ourselves.

I thought we were the better team for most of the game. There were spells when Brentford did dominate though and created some good chances.

Overall I think we were better in attack than the last home game, certainly more movement and O'Brien's directness was good. However Prutton was still a bit slow and we did hoof a bit too much at times. Dossevi struggled to bring the ball down and get others into the game so I think Pericard should have possibly come on sooner.

Defensively (whole team not just the back four) we were poor. Looked shakey and lacked confidence. Caddis had a stinker and obviously Rose wasn't good and these were the weak links. Morrison and Cuthbert did look solid however, Morrison in particular made some great tackles and interceptions.

Overall I see progress in some areas and none in others. An experienced leader at the back would not have helped the full backs today.

An interesting game that one. We started really well and you thought we'd go on to win comfortably but we let it slip at the back again with an awful goal to concede. Why Rose didn't just boot it out i'll never know. Even putting it out for a corner would have been better. I thought that for the rest of the first half we went into panic mode. No need for it with so much time left but we rushing things and they weren't clicking. A decent set piece got is a nice goal at just the right time.
Weston missed an absolute sitter for them and our defence at times was all over the place.

Second half was much better from us. Defence looked more solid, we looked carmer and created more chances. Shame we couldn't take one of them and go on to win but it was much more positive from us and at times we looked to attack in a similar vein to last season so that was good to see.

Plenty of positives for me. Morrison the first. Good solid performance from him. Didn't really put a foot wrong all game. Gave us a bit more presence than LJF does in that position. The centre back pairing worked well together. AOB looked as sharp as i've ever seen him in a Town shirt and probably as good as i've ever seen him as well. He caused them no end of problems down the left. If he can stay fit and keep that up he could be a big assest for us this season. Ball looked better on the left today than he did against Brighton. Had a pretty decent game today I think. Prutton and JD seem to be working a little bit better together now......it's coming together slowly I think.

Now for the negatives. Rose. Can he defend? He looked all over the place at times. Silly mistake but he did seem to improve after that. Caddis. His link up play with JP isn't there at all at the moment. He doesn't know when to defend and when to go forward. I guess it will come in time but today I thought he was average in all honesty. Struggled to cope with the presence of Weston on the wing. Get the full backs sorted and get them playing well down the flanks and we're getting there. Last point now and it's the lack of height/presence upfront. Dossevi looks handy but needs the ball played to feet. We lumped it up too much at times with him and Austin unable to do anything. Pericard should have come on sooner IMO. He looked pretty handy....shame that the one time he decided to shoot he should have played Prutton in. Doh.

A draw isn't the end of the world. We're getting there slowly but surely. It was much improved from the Brighton game anyway.

Joe I'd have been OK with, but it was his younger brother, he's a much sharper operator.

Thought O'Brien did pretty well today (as a random football-related thought strays into my head) or rather did considerably better than he has done before, which may not be the same thing. But if he keeps improving it will be. The combo of him and Rose at the moment is leaving us very exposed on the left. I'm not sure what my point is or if I have one

Title: Re: Swindon v Brentford Official Matchday Thread
Post by: reeves4england on Saturday, August 21, 2010, 17:21:39

Yes. But it is a predicament which is hard to solve right now. I'm not alone in thinking Pericard should have come on sooner to give us more presence up front, whilst others are complaining that Dossevi went off. And obviously taking St Charles off would be punishable by death. So what does Wilson do? It'd be nice to think we have somebody lined up in the Pericard mould who can actually score goals, but given what we have got it's very difficult to know who should play.

Prutton is poor, only able to play at his own pace and is wasteful with posession, lethargic and doesn't fucking run at all. Ferry and Douglas worked last season but in the three games I've seen so far, Douglas and Prutton does not work at all.

I don't rate Rose at all and thought Caddis was poor too. Morrison was solid but the problem(s) came down the sides, Rose's error was a total disaster - what had they worked on in training? - and Caddis was getting turned inside out by their number 11. The defense as a unit needs an experienced leader, we seriously miss Greer.

Dossevi will need a little longer to adjust to the physicality of League One, he wants a bit too much time on the ball.

Ball was more of a threat than O'Brien, although constantly cuts inside so doesn't supply much.

We didn't deserve to lose but weren't clinical enough to win. Danny will get the right players in and we'll get a couple of wins under our belt and that'll be that - we'll be well up there. The problems in this team don't run deep and they're not terminal.

Thank you Brentford for missing two sitters. It was one hell of a fuck up from Rose. If you take that away then he was still shit - defensively he is utter dogshit as he was in the other 3 games I've seen him in. Consdering he is the most experienced of the back 4, he is by far the weakest link. There were times again today when his communication with the other defenders was non existent. LB has been a problem since Vincent went. Kennedy did well there and we looked a lot stronger.
Prutton got better as the game went on. Morrison was very good and deserved MOM. AOB, i thuogh played really well more so in the first half. JPM doesn't quite seem the same player this season - he's still busy but as someone lese says I think he misses Manky. Caddis had a bad game today but hopefully its a one off.
I thuoght Big Vince should have came on earlier to knock the defenders around. its a real shame he missed at the end but at least he had a crack. Austin and Dossevi doesn't appear to be working .....yet. If we can get Dossevi match fit and up to speed with the English game he will be one hell of a player. He's brave, got a great touch and is intelligent - possibly too intelligent with some of his runs. I do wonder whether we need to go 4-3-3 with Austin, Pericard and Dossevi up front.

would have left dossevi on personally and the subs were made at a time we were in the ascendency (sp) which I found a bit baffling. If he wanted to put ball on, would have taken AOB off tbh as he covered a lot of ground first half but for me he was blowing a bit in the 2nd.

Think Prutton would have made way at half time had it not been for his goal as he gave us nothing-for me he's not better than Ferry(despite his goal!)

Biggest noticeable difference to last season (other than GG&BP)....the tempo we're playing at and hunting in packs- for me ferry and douglas were so good at this last year it gave us licence to play a bit.

Morrison was solid and they played into his hands as I reckon he won 25+ headers today-we still lacking a leader though in all honesty.

It is early days and the expectation of last season is weighing heavily on some(including me) - I really don't want an 'after the Lord Mayors show' season.

With an experienced/leader centre half on board and a Danny Ward equivalent, I'd be confident of us making the play offs, without them......we're doomed I tell thee ;-)

Got to say i have always championed Morrison and for me today played really well...nineteen years old,was good at the back...and even looked lively in the opposition box.
I t was poor in my opinion...very poor.
When are we goin to look positive as the home team...we are always sitting and waiting to break.
There goal was down to individual error but to be fair they had chances anyway.
Why bring Dossevi off?.....thaught O,Brien ran his socks off but the final ball was poor.
And finally why bring a small striker on,Ball.....then hoof it for the remainder of the match.
Fair play to the Town fans...kept supporting in the main and 8000.plus wasnt bad at all.
1-1 was a good result after that performance.

Dossevi went off because he was too small and we were lumping it up. Agree about Ball coming on. He should have subbed Dossevi for Pericard then bought Ball on in a drect swap for AOB.

Yet again a Rose mistake leads to a goal for the opposition. I do rate Rose's abillity highly- his confidence, composure and technique are brilliant for this league and would be hard to find another left back of his abillity in this league. However he does make some costly mistakes. It does seem like 'bash a Swindon defender' month but it is the reallity...

Rose and Caddis got raped time and time again.

Douglas and Prutton sat to deep which meant JPM and AOB came inside too much and the front two didn't get any service (apart from hoof balls up from the back).

Morrision was big positive for me. Appeared to be talking to the back 4 a lot too.

I'm struggling to see where the points are coming from in the next 3 games.

It's still early. Think we may be suffering a bit of a hangover from last season to go with the obvious problems at the back, but you only have to look at Millwall last season - who started slowly after their play off final defeat - for reasons to be positive. I think when Wilson's brought in one or two new faces & we have a settled line up, we'll be blazing.

I struggle to see it with Rose he is no better that what we have here, we now have 3 left backs at the club and others who could fill that position.

Caddis is certainly a winger and not a right back.

I'm surprised that I agree with most of that. On the three games I've seen this team looks like a skidmark on last years. Hints of old selves passing wise in patches, but we are far from dominant. Not sure what to do about the defence. Rose has started the season very poorly. Currently I would include Sheehan in the list of players from last season that we have not adequately replaced. Still early though. :hmmm:

Today I thought Cuthbert and Caddis also decided to have shit games. If Wilson had done his homework a bit today may have been a good game to start big Kev. Their LW got by Caddis time and time again.

Must do better...

The game - totally dominated, although Brentford had a couple of golden opportunities, but apart from that it was all us.  Morrison was quality.  Rose will get slated, as our fans do, so there will be no way back for him now as so often happens with many of our new players, Prutton is going the same way even though I thought he was decent, and Pericard didn't score so that must mean he is shit!

There is not too much wrong, we are that close to having a team that is capable of doing something, but being Swindon fans that is not good enough and we will get on certain players back enough to ensure that our fortress of last season will turn into an achilles heal that the players will be scared to play in because the slightest fuck up will attract an uproar of derision from the town faithful, the DR stand in particular! To be fair the towned sounded good today and supported the team when they needed it.

Apologies for the Dave esk post but for the first half today I sat nearby a fat gobby twat that continued to shout abuse at the players, such as "Fuck off Prutton" and "you don't deserve your pay packets".  Funny how he went quiet when Prutton scored.

I really am getting fucked off with our so called fans!  A day out at Wembley does not give us the god given right to win every game and it is obvious that a lot of our fans know absolutely fuck all about football.

Rose did make a mistake, and didn't have the best of games, so lets get on his back.
Prutton did misplace a few passes, but then grew into the game and became our most effective midfielder, so lets get on his back.
Caddis did look like our best player until they scored and did get caught out a few times, so lets get on his back.
Pericard came on and looked half decent, gave us that option that we didn't have, but didn't score so lets get on his back.

Yes I'm in a fucked off mood so excuse the negativity, but it's not about the team, more about the muppet fans that if they don't want to support the team fuck off back to your armchairs and shout at the TV.

This has got to be a wind up or are you Mrs Rose? How the fuck can you say his confidence, composure and technique are brilliant for this league. All of them were lacking today as they have been the other 3 games I've seen him in. His main job is to defend and from what I've seen he's as good defensively as Kim fucking Heisleberg or whatever his fucking name was. Defensively he is utter, utter, utter fucking shit.

Rose seems very uncertain to me, he gets the ball, stops, thinks about doing something, changes his mind, thinks about something else...rinse and repeat several times before actually playing the ball. It's a shame, he certainly seems to have some talent in terms of delivery, but he's been a bit of a disappointment so far.

Interesting reading if a little too gloom and doom for me.  We started pretty well with Brentford hoofing it and being rushed.  Obviously Rose fucking up changed everything but I could see what he was trying to do, he just totally ballsed up the execution.  Some folk around me thought Lucas could have been a bit more aware and gone out to Rose quicker.  In fact Lucas flapped at a couple which didn't help the demeanour of the defense which was jitterly most of the game despite Morrison doing well. If I remember right Rose did the long throw which Morrison flicked on for Prutton to score, so cut him a little slack.  My big disappointment was the midfield who couldn't compete for most of the game - same as the Brighton game for me.  It so frustrating because on the odd occasion they did get it right we looked like we could have run Brentford right off the park.  What didn't work was bringing Ball on then hoofing it up to him - Pericard should have come on earlier.  BTW I think Dossevi went off because he went up for a challenge with a Brentford player who landed on his ankle.    What hasn't been mentioned was Charlie Austin's contribution to the game.  He had a few half chances and if the ball had fallen kindly, he could have had a couple.  But what impressed me was the fact that he won virtually every header he went up for, loads of flick-ons, at least 2 defensive headers from their corners, and a couple in midfield in our half.  He got through loads of work and still kept going for 90 minutes - last year he'd have been knackered at 70 minutes and subbed.

My first game of the season today, and havent really been following TEF due to holidays etc, so I have NO preconceptions about the players...conclusions:

Prutton is NOT as bad as half of you make out....pace isnt the be all and end all. I thought he was pretty effective.

Rose, ok, silly mistake for the goal, but more generally was terrified whenever their man was attacking Rose...weak link at the moment

Pericard won pretty much everything in the air, ok its not pretty but fuck me its effective, he seemed to play one of our players in everytime it was lumped up to him.

I like the look of Dossevi, a useful asset

Thought Kennedy did well for his short time.

Rose, looks useful but also very lightweight, a little scary. Can see him just being muscled out of many games.

Generally a long way off last years standards, looking at the next 6 to 8 weeks, either this new look team gels and we get a few more useful editions, or last year was our highlight and mid table for us this year.

FInally, fair play to the  'Danny Wilsons having a party' boys in front of me in the TE today..kept me entertained for most of the match.

Well well well, another defensive error costs us.

Again, not much should be read into the result. For what it's worth, we played quite well, and definitely started the brighter of the two teams. Brentford did have a very good left winger, but apart from that we seemed to deal with them. Up until Rose cocked up. Why oh why he tried a diving header back i don't know, all he had to do was kick it out for a corner or throw-in, but instead he tried to completely halt Brentford's attack with a fancy diving header back which of course gifted MacDonald the goal. Whatever happened to the old cliche "when in doubt put it out"? Rose was a bit of a liability today in all honesty, was surprised he was substituted though.

Morrison did superbly, and fully warranted his motm award. Now he puts the aforementioned cliche to good use. Both him and Cuthbert were pretty solid, again no clear leader between them though. It's the first time i've seen Caddis and he did well, got forward alot and linked with JPM pretty well. He ran Morrison very close for motm for me.

Alan O'brien had another good game, his third on the trot it seems? Definitely caused problems for their old-ish right back. He was lively all match, few of his crosses were hit and miss, but put in shit loads of effort today, so can't criticize him. Douglas was his usual self, and even had a few half chances with long distance shots. Prutton annoyed me. Yes, he scored, but other than that i fail to see what he contributed. Was dispossessed on far too many occasions, and lost the ball alot.

Up top we were quiet, they marked Austin very well with that bulky Legge bloke. Dossevi was lively in the first half, but burnt himself out and might have even picked up a niggle in the second half. Pericard came on, and i was quite impressed. His last minute effort looked close, although maybe he could've squared it for Prutton. Don't blame him for going for it though.

So overall, not a bad performance but i see it as two points lost, rather than one gained. Brentford had chances, and their left winger was shit hot (apart from his open goal miss), but i feel we shaded the game and had the home advantage, so should've won. I'd bring Ferry in at Franchise next week, drop Prutton and maybe even Rose if we've signed a better option than Kennedy.

I wasn't at the game today so had to confine myself to following events via this match day thread on here & also the BBC. Sounds a very frustrating game.

However, let's not get too down. The so-called big teams aren't piling up the points either.  Witness Southampton who dropped another couple of points at home, Huddersfield also took a beating today at Peterborough who themselves got thrashed last week by Bournemouth. We're still not out of anything although like most of you I'd wish we were making fewer mistakes & winning games.  Good to hear that two products of the youth scheme Morrison & Kennedy played today & by all accounts played well.

Well as so many different people are identifying so many different problems, it's pretty obvious the resolution is not going to come about from changing a couple of players.

It may be a start, but the whole team isn't working together as well as it may and they will need to up their games if we are to reach the playoffs.

We have lost the spine of the team in the summer in Paynter, Ward, Sheehan and Greer.

Until we bring in like for like replacements or get more out of the players we have we will struggle to get anywhere near last seasons position. You cannot lose the spine of a side without adequate replacements and expect to go one better.

AOB was good today. Pericard will score soon enough and his confidence will go sky high and he will be providing Charlie with shedloads of assists. I think Rose did ok today (yeah fuck off all of you slagger-offers) and both Kennedy and Morrison were highlights.

Overall disappointed with a draw but I think Brentford are well underestimated. They should have won that.

The most frustrating thing is we're not a bad side. We're a decent side, it just hasn't clicked yet and we're being punished for the mistakes. There's very little wrong, but the tiny bits that are are fucking us over.

The only thing today, other than Rose's gift, that got me down was the subs. Firstly, the two back to back...do them at the same time. And Ball was brought on up top for no more than 5 mins then moved out wide, and combined with an injury, the game just died for 15 mins in the middle of the second half, when we should have been cranking it up.

Someone else mentioned Millwall last year starting slowly etc, and I agree. Lets have a look in 4 games time, but right now I'm still confident we'll be challenging for a play-off spot.

So that'd make you, what, O 57? I'm O 59, although due to forgetting my season ticket today and having to buy a replacement (which was for K81 or something) the stewards wouldn't let me in to that part of the town end. Until I snuck in, like a ninja.

We really need 3 points to get confidence and belief back into the side.

Pluses: Morrison's general performance and composure. Austin's aerial dominance of two monster centre-backs.

Negatives: Central midfield and fullback - Douglas must have been carrying a knock as that was easily the worst I've seen him in a Town shirt. Prutton gets a lot of flak but wasn't any worse than Douglas. Both fullbacks were scarily bad in the first 45.  Worst of all was Pericard's refusal to play in a team mate and go for glory - banjo, arse and cow spring to mind. The strange thing really was that Pericard looked ok until then...

Sheehan part of the spine of our team? Not fucking likely! We miss Greer and Ward but Dossevi will be a more than adequate replacement given time. The problem in midfield is not due to us losing part of our spine

I usually sit in T211 if anyone wants to come give me a hug.

Another frustrating game!

We started really well and I thought we were in for a nice comfortable 3-0 win but then Rose fucks up and we find ourselves behind out of nothing. The confidence visibly drained out of the players and it took us most of the first half to recover.

Second half wasn't too bad, we looked dangerous at times but never put together a period of sustained pressure where you felt that a goal was coming. Brentford had a couple of decent opportunities on the counter and you could argue we were lucky to come away with a point in that respect.

I don't share the opinion that Rose is complete shit, although as a full back he has shown very little evidence of actually being able to defend so far. Going forwards he's looked ok, maybe we could utilise him on the left of midfield because Kennedy looked solid enough at left back when he came on.

Was looking forward to seeing Caddis today but he disappointed me a little, like Rose defending isn't his strong point and their no. 11 roasted him everytime. Again may be better off in midfield, but I wouldn't drop swap him for JPM who is consistently one of our better players.

Finding it hard to like Prutton, he doesn't do enough for me, although he did improve as the game went on and would have won the game for us if Pericard had squared it to him at the end. Why did Shirtliff have to tell him to be greedy?!

Positives were Morrison and O'Brien, that is probably the best I have seen O'Brien play, if only he could cross but then he wouldn't be playing for us. Ball also looked lively and much improved on his display against Brighton.

I'm sure we will be ok, but we need to settle down into a formation and pattern of play that suits us sooner rather than later. At the moment we seem to be hoping for things to happen rather than making them happen.

I really rated Vincent but he wasn't a Wilson type defender - ie he defended and was crap going forward. But he was the last decent left back we had. JFL is still learning, Sheehan was massively overrrated and was certainly a lot worse after being given a shitting on my the Pikeys Oli and going off injured. As for Rose, well enough said. Based on today, I'd give Kennedy a shot. He's certainly bulked out a bit.

I actually rate JFL. I'd be happy with him at LB ( sorry Batch ) but Kennedy played well today and dexserves his shot. Rose either needs to play left midfield or be dropped at the moment. As arriba says if JFL was fit, then I'd be seriously fucked off if I were him.

I haven't read this thread, although will in the morning, but wanted to say that I listened to this game on the radio while watching it at the CG and was annoyed at the criticism of O'Brien who, I thought, had a great game.

All they talked about was that he needs to improve his delivery, when on several crosses they criticised him for were actually deflections. He had a great game and it properly pissed me off, as that commentary made O'Brien out to be quite poor and in the end caused me to turn it off. Oh and Pericard had a great game, last shot excused.

Just a few thought on today; Both full backs were shite defensively today. Caddis offers us an option to play him in midfield, but Rose will struggle to find an alternative berth unless injuries play a part.

Morrison was brilliant at center back, but we miss Greers ability to keep a cool head when under pressure. Ditto his controlled passing out of defence, which brought the midfielders into the game very quickly last season and also took the opposition strikers out of the game at the same time.

Maybe Morrison will add that to his game with experience and age, but there's no escaping the fact that Greer had those traits in abundance and we're missing them like fuck at the moment.

Prutton looks like he's one fucking hell of an ego merchant. Strutting around like johnny big bollocks is all well and good if the performances match up. So far though, he's an expensive signing who mostly gets in the way of last seasons best and most consistent performer, JD. He took his goal well, but he's too slow in mind and body at the moment. Needs to dig in and put in a performance before Simon Ferry pushes him aside.

Agree with the Vinnie supporters. He's a star in waiting. He's the only striker we have who'll really mix it consistently and once he gets his first goal, he'll be hard to stop.

St Charlie's contribution was good today, but he does sometimes seem pre-occupied by his right wrist injury / defect. Anyone have any idea why he has it constantly strapped up in that pink 1970's style NHS bandage??

Dossevi will be class as well. He looks very capable and gives us options up front.

Far too early to write us off. We're struggling a bit at the moment, but Wilson isn't a twat. I have no doubt he'll be working his nuts off to get the balance sorted out and will quickly bring in the faces he needs to slot in the right places.

Although yesterday's game was disappointing, I don't think any panic buttons need pressing just yet. Rose made a huge fuck-up for their goal, but I still think he'll prove his worth to us. I'm beginning to think that Prutton is one of those players who never looks interested, even when they are. And once again I think he'll come good. Dossevi looked very promising, he just needs to get used to the pace and physicality of the English game. Austin kept running and trying all game, Caddis had a poor first half (By his standards) but improved in the 2nd. For me, the best thing yesterday was seeing Morrison look so in-control; he was even shouting instructions out to the rest of the defence. Too soon to say for sure, but I think he'll grow into the role of leader (Whether for us or someone else, who knows) Kennedy also showed signs that he could be useful this season.

Obviously there were some negatives too, but fuck it, I'll let all you depressing cunts pick those bones.

This time (ish) last year we were moaning about late goals conceded and lots of draws. This year we are conceding early instead.

The season proper won't get underway until september/october. We have a few issues, hopefully we'll sort them.

Title: Re: Swindon v Brentford Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Spencer_White on Sunday, August 22, 2010, 09:04:41
I thought both teams were poor at the back yesterday and will both leak goals all season.

We were better going forward than against Brighton, but still far too hesitant. Not enough movement again. If we had put them under pressure for just 2 or 3 minutes we would have scored, they would have crumbled. If the ball breaks free to Austin in the box he'll probably score.

Basically we need more ideas from the training ground onto the pitch. More organisation.

I thought Dossevi and Pericard both looked very hungry and it was a real shame neither scored. I think Pericard appreciated the support from the crowd. Ball really looked up for the challenge of playing left wing, he didnt look lost like he did against Brighton, a player improving all the time. O'Brien is frustrating because you can see him winning the crowd over and then he does something stupid like running the ball out of play, but I think he is getting there. Caddis and Prutton need to do more going forward. Defense still looks dodgy.

Better crowd than expected as well. Fingers crossed we can get 12,000+ against Southampton.

Without wishing to alarm you, we hit 6th place after 6 games...we then were starting a 12 game unbeaten run, which ended when Douglas got sent off and we lost a couple, so dropping down a bit, then we won at Tranny with BP coming back in after being dropped. It was probably the reserves game when BP and Charlie both got a brace, so Wilson brought him in at Carlisle that changed our season.

But to be fair Reg the majority of that unbeaten run (I think it was actually 11 games) were draws. The one positive I have taken thus far is that we are unbeaten in 2 and the main reason both were not wins is because we've cocked up at the back on 3 occasions.

You're right to keep chilled out....finding a team is a bit of a hit and miss thing, take Danny Williams, it took him 3 years to end up with the LC winning side.  He needed to add bits on season by season.  These days you don't get that time, but we're not too far away. Wilson knows his trade and a bit more wheeling dealing and tinkering should at least give us a competitive side.

ISOB draws are useful as long as you win about half the fixtures....23 wins + some draws is going to put you in the mix....

I laughed when Pericard shot.
Nineteen games in town colours and he still hasn't scored a goal.

Where as Pericard arrived injured, as back up to a lethal, unbreakable partnership and is now getting his chance in a team that is now a slightly disjointed. He didn't do himself any favours by saying he wanted 15 by the end of last season, but I still think he'll grab one soon.

Big difference being that Fjortoft started most of those games and in all these appearances pericard has made he has only started 2 games.

The bloke is clearly under pressure and unfortunatly it's going to get harder as the only time he really comes on is when we are chasing a game.

Blimey that Pericard miss was worse than it looked from the Town End. He should have played Prutton in. Even from the angle he was at it was always going to be a tough ask to score.

He needs one in off the ass or something to get him up and running.

I seem to remember seeing him score in pre season against against bristol city (steve whites benefit) and then he didnt score again for ages.  The 69'er did cut out badges saying 'Ive seen fjortoft score' on them!

A gaff by the Palace keeper gifted him his first for the Town.

All credit to Vince for taking the shot on, it shows that he still has some belief in his ability. His strength and touch fashioned the chance as well.

(but yes he probably should have squared it)

I get the impression most people wanted Pericard to take that shot. It would have been so brilliant if he'd have scored the winner and it was a good little run.

I wanna hear that "Pericard is a goal machine" chant. My mate who went to Hartlepool told me about it. Seems slightly harsh as it is tongue in cheek but it's just terrace humour.
