I wonder how much a stereotypical US Christian republican would be compatible with most of the UK? My guess is not very much.

Compatible in which respect?

Compatible with our tolerance to things that such people (stereo-typical Christian republicans) are generally intolerant to!

You should go to somewhere like Malaysia, a real melting pot of race, religion and what not and they all get on just fine. Although initial clashes are of course likely as people assimilate to new surroundings.

Presumably he thinks Jakarta is in Malaysia. Indonesia is a pretty amazing country, when you consider how diverse it is. It's amazing they have as little trouble as they do.

Ha, that would explain it.

I've never made it to Indonesia although I know a few who have.

I'd recommend Sumatra, although I didn't venture into Aceh. You can fly air asia to Medan from Bangkok.

Brilliant, incredibly varied country. Been to Java, Bali, Lombok, Gili and Sulawesi. Lovely place, lovely people.

"Indonesia is a pretty amazing country, when you consider how diverse it is"

Isn't this an admission that a diverse country is likely to be problematic ?

I'm not sure admission is the correct term, but it can cause problems, of course. Indonesia is a vast archipelago with 14,000 islands, 300+ native ethnic groups, and 700+ languages spoken, so it's not really comparable to anywhere else on earth.

If you want to compare though, I'd say one of the reasons it largely works there is because everyone can come together under the Pan-Indonesian banner, while still having there individual identities. In a European setting that banner should be the native culture of the individual countries, although that culture is subject to change over time too.

I'm not a fan of mass immigration either. I don't think it helps anyone and should be done over time.

I didn't realise there was 700 languages in the world let alone in one country.
