BT are good Sam.

Only gripe is their customer service.

i got some wanky score with tiscali but can't face the idea of being without the net for a week or two whilst the mongs on the new provider do their things and make me pay for having a nice new box on the floor instead of this wanky modem.

check out www.adslguide.org.uk

Will tell you which providers etc you can get in your area and speeds etc.

You should look at ADSL Max/2 whatever they call it. Can get upto 24MB on some exchanges.

You don't have to.

Just phone Tiscali and get a MAC code and use this to set up with a new provider.

Your Tiscali connection with remain active until the new broadband provided is switched onto your line at the exchange.

Maximum downtime = 30 minutes.

Barry Scott, 1/2 MB!?!?

Whose your provider, they're ripping you off.

It sucks, but then it doesn't directly affect me. It's BT, they gave me 2MB if i upgraded from my 512 with unlimited bandwidth or some bollocks.

I do little downloading and the biggest things i upload are scripts using ftp, which tends to be slow regardless.

Bandwidth etc matters not to me. I'd happily have a 256k if they sold it and it was cheaper.

Just checked again several times and it's currently up to just under 1500kbps download, but it will always change because of that areshole contention ratio.

What sort of speed do you get at this time?

Guess that's the advantage of living out of town

just done it again and I got:

Download Speed: 9789 kbps (1223.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 488 kbps (61 KB/sec transfer rate)

There's a few others nearby on ntl but I don't know what speed they're on, I don't need 10mbit but I'm used to it.

Some maths nerd at college said I was a liar for saying I've got 10mbit, strange world where people lie about the internet connections Sad

HSDPA or 3.5G is the future.

Wireless routers now available as well as PCMCI cards for laptops.  Once the UK networks start getting their act together on coverage and prices it’ll be a viable alternative to ADSL without having to piss around sending high-speed ADSL services through an antique infrastructure.

I've got 3.6 Mbps at the moment which is eventually going to support 14.4 Mbps all through a SIM card.
