Title: Great Western Reds
Post by: JayBox325 on Monday, August 8, 2016, 13:31:51
I know this thread won't be appealing to many of you, but I've had some pretty good support and help from some of you chaps over the last year and a half of trying to put on displays and generally attempting to improve the atmosphere home & away.

Learned a lot of lessons over this time both positive and negative. But I'm hoping we're in a really good position to do some interesting stuff this season.

As requested by quite a lot of fans, we're focussing on home displays this season. Not only supporting the first eleven, but trying to have supporter days at Swindon Town Ladies and Youth games.

Anyway, @TownEndDisplays became Great Western Reds over the summer. And we're a group of 5 - 10 likeminded fans now :)

We've just started to try and raise funds for a little display against the Gas and a pretty large display against O*ford. If you fancy chucking a couple of quid our way to help out that'd be awesome.

Below is our contact information & social media stuff. Do with this information what you will :)

You'd be better off putting this in the boardroom, unless you want lots of unwanted mail!

This is the plan, but those giant banners are a pain in the ass to paint up or expensive thing to buy printed.

Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but would love to see something similar to the Crystal Palace fanatics fan group at Swindon.

Yes it is a bit choreographed, but at least there is some atmosphere for the majority of the game.

Although a bit of noise would probably upset those who prefer to watch football in reverential silence.

We're big fans of the Palace fanatics. We try and take experience from them as much as we can without copying them ;).

We moved to the Town End this season to try and keep moaning moaners at a minimum. People were stopping to take photos of our banners at the Coventry game, so it's looking promising so far :P

I wish Mr Box and his chums well with their endeavours but a bit more vocal support from our fans during games would be just as likely to lift the team - and wouldn't cost anything.

We agree. So we're hoping to lift the atmosphere and hope that a few streamers and flags etc may be the catalyst that gets some fans a bit more up for the game than if there wasn't anything. We all sing as much as we can, so we're just trying to do our bit in encouraging others to get into singing.

I can't shift the mental image of a bunch of shirters turning up at a women's or youth football match with streamers and balloons.

So? :P Means more funding and support for the Ladies team. And means fans get another day out at the football! :)

Sorting out ordering the stuff for the Rovers display tomorrow. Looking for one last little push for stuff to make it as good as possible. Couple of quid if you can spare it :)

Hopefully we can help add fuel to the already flammable atmosphere. (Bad analogy, I know).

Jaybox, you seem like a nice guy, if somewhat misguided, but shouldn't you take your happy clappy nonsense back to ice hockey / basketball etc ?

90% of Oxford Fans are complete cunts and will laugh at your attempts to intimidate them with a flag.

Couple of points.

1.) you are one person, so I don't see why Jay should listen to your opinion as if it's factual or representative.

2.) they had a banner so why shouldn't we?

3.) people are entitled to support their club in whichever way they see fit - if it's kicking the shit out of people that gets you off then fair enough, but some people don't enjoy that.

4.) getting behind the team DOES help performances.

5.) I hate OUFC as much as the next Town fan but if you truly believe that 90% of them are wankers you must have been kicked in the head too many times. They're a group of people who go to watch their local football team and there's fuck all reason why they'd be any different to the bunch of twats we get at the County on a derby day.

Does this argument have to happen every time?

I've never met the guy but fair play to him. He's supporting the town the way he knows and others enjoy it. Others may take a dinosaur aporoach and I do t gave a problem with that either as long as all combatants are willing and no innocents involved

The 'dinosaur' approach has got nothing to do with supporting the football team though.
Jay's not advocating arranging a meet with Oxford's top lads and waving a flag in their face. He's trying to create a visual display during the match that looks decent and/or encourages people to join in with supporting the men on the pitch.

Jay box - I salute you. An enthusiastic town fan who gets off his arse and shows a lot of initiative and helps the atmosphere at the game. You are a credit to the club and i would ask all those who are negative towards you exactly what have they done for the club beyond supporting the team on a match day - I certainly haven't contributed what you have.  Good on you Jay and I for one will be very thankful for your efforts on Saturday.

Oooohh a Flag fight, that's a new one, is that where they stand and see who can wave their flag the most, I'm sure the old bill would be happy to allocate some resources to that, is that a individual event or a team event

We have just worked out what the Oxford fans are doing on Saturday for their display. As far as we can see it's just a flag for every seat in the home end stand. Although there may be a banner that goes with it.

We're taking it easier this time around, it's hard to enjoy an away day when you have bags and bags of stuff to carry around. Although we do have some little bits going on, nothing OTT. We're settling to just blow them away at home come February.

(and let's be honest, they do things better than us when it comes to displays.)

Bear in mind they have the backing of their club helping them do everything whereas we have to work very hard to get the club to allow us to do anything (STFC didn't even allow us to throw streamers at the Rovers game). They've also been doing it a lot longer than we have.

But your opinion will change come February. Our tifo in the Town End with own theirs.

Part of being an Oxford fan is an unhealthy obsession with STFC.

I guess it came about through a sense of inferiority, Headington arriving late on the football scene, finally giving us a game 86 years after we started.

Then proceeding to mostly get stuffed in the subsequent occasional encounters just reinforced that sense of inadequacy.

We've seen in recent years how that obsession works as a motivation, like the last time we played them in the league...for them beating us twice made a memorable season even though they failed again to reach the FL play offs for a first time, whereas we went on to win the league reasonably comfortably......I don't think many of our fans would have traded positions.

Title: Re: Great Western Reds
Post by: Tails on Thursday, September 8, 2016, 08:51:19
They're alright Oxford fans. We used to play friendlies against them every year and they're a good bunch. But yeah... it definitely means a lot more to them than it does us. I guess it's been easier for us as we've (generally) had the better of them for the best part of 25+ years. Certainly in terms of league positions.

I find tribalism in football tiring. For years, I tried to hate them but couldn't produce the levels of hate that others can.

Again, beating loud opposition simply means a couple of weeks, months and years of quiet.

Another vote for banner wankers
And me. Although I'd be equally happy with "Flag Twats"

That depends. Do they have a season ticket?

For the club, the terrorism or the molestation?

The last time we were in the same division as Oxford we lost all 3 games we played against them.

That season panned out quite nicely.

FUCK YEAH...?

A mate of a mate is an Oxford fan, was at a wedding with him the other day. Obviously, any sane human being understands that an Oxford fan or a Rovers Fan or a Swindon fan is ultimately the same as a Pompey fan or a Barnet fan or whatever. As likely to be a prick or a decent bloke as anyone else.

He's a decent bloke. We had a bit of banter. Made a bet. Took the piss out of each other and move on. Surely that's what's it's all about.

As an aside... he'd rather beat us twice and us go up than the other way round. Fool.

This is probably a great example of how the rivalry is definitely stronger on one side

TBF the whole forum is quite childish.

With all the love breaking out all of a sudden, perhaps ticketing arrangements should have seated Ox & Swindon in alternate seats plus a mass issue of half & half scarves.

A red and yellow chequerboard effect. Nice.

What a bunch of fucking pumpers!

If love to take my boys to watch us play a derby game but feel they would be put off for life by all the neanderthal fucktards from both sets of fans.
But for fuck sake town, we're well overdue a win.
Enjoy it,  those that are going,  and stay safe 👍

I particularly like the comments along the lines of, 'hope they liquidate' etc

Who else are they going to pull one off over if that ever happened?!?

Don't get yours hopes up, I'm yet to see us beat them and I've been to every game we have played them since and including the FA Cup fixture that was live on BBC, I'm going again Saturday so that's the end of that.
Well stop going 😀

I went to a wedding with an Oxford fan a few years ago. It's one of the things that's sullied my opinion of them.. (Seriously (http://www.primeperformersagency.co.uk/uploads/images/speakers/Timmy-Mallett.jpg))

Part of being an Oxford fan is an unhealthy obsession with STFC.

I guess it came about through a sense of inferiority, Headington arriving late on the football scene, finally giving us a game 86 years after we started.

This is precisely it.  Oxford had to carve out a territory for themselves when they were founded circa 1960 from an area previously occupied by Swindon and Reading.  Until they came on the scene, they used to run buses from Oxford to Reading and Swindon on match days.  Their club identity is coloured by a need to show that they're equals now, and it explains perfectly why they focus on local rivalry more than anyone else.

They're alright Oxford fans. We used to play friendlies against them every year and they're a good bunch. But yeah... it definitely means a lot more to them than it does us. I guess it's been easier for us as we've (generally) had the better of them for the best part of 25+ years. Certainly in terms of league positions.
Have you actually met any of them ?

Cunts

What about people who choose to live in countries popular with child molesters ?

It's tempting to censor.

But I say we allow them to speak, that way it's easier for the rest of us to identify them.

He must have managed to play friendlies against them for years without actually meeting them. Impressive.

We've started a fundraiser for our next tifo. Should be a good one! Read about it on the olde blog:

http://greatwesternreds.com/

It's focussed on Remembrance Sunday which is the day after the Charlton fixture, and it just so happens that this game is televised, so we could get to do something for Remembrance Sunday on national TV. :)

"Football League Trophy for Football League Teams"

Il chuck in money for this banner for the Oxford game. A derby game will already have media attention why not build on it.

My favourite one of the season so far! Absolutely love the video of them putting it out. Just look at the sheer size of it. Incredible to think that was painted by them.
