good point, and with a lack of a left-sided midfielder (downing doesn't count - yet) it makes you wonder why england dont play 3-5-2?

I've often said that myself, there is the argument that 3-5-2 doesn't work at international level, but Brazil won every game they played in 2002 World Cup using that system, so that doesn't stand up.
Beckham, Gerard and Lampard would be a very strong, tight central midfield. Cole is one of the most natural wing backs in the world, so it would suit him very well, Neville always used to look good when he overlapped down the right circa 1996, so would probably look decent enough.
There wouldn't be a stronger back three in the world (given that we also have King waiting to come in whenever he is needed), and the Rooney/Owen partnership would benefit from three central midfielders more than just your regular two.
That's my opinion anyway.
