I guess you could drive around the scilly Isles in 5 minutes. What tips/recommendations are you after, which bike to get? Doesn't Reg have an electric bike?

Fuzzy is the TEF electric bike person.... when I asked. Go for something with the Shimano Steps system or the Bosch system. Good motor and battery reliability.
The Steps has 3 power settings whereas the Bosch has 4. Shimano powers application is smooth and Bosch punches in a bit more aggressively.
Both systems could give 60 to 70 kilometres of assistance if used wisely. The other good thing about these systems is that, as the motor replaces the bottom bracket, they carry the weight very well. Turning pedals with the power off doesn't feel like you are lugging a big motor.
PM me if you want more info.

I presume you want a road or hybrid style bike?
I've got an e-mtb with a Shimano steps motor, excellent motor and not overly noisy, turns what would be a two hour ride into a four or five hour one.
The quietest motors are the Brose ones, as used by Specialized.

Just wanted a hybrid bike. We only have about 7 miles of road but it's a tad hilly for someone of my advanced years and I only really need to get to the golf course or to some quiet beach in the summer !

A car costs about £1k a year to keep on the road, without fuel.

Ah, gotcha. What about an electric car? I wonder if you can still get a Sinclair C5.
