Title: Ford Focus
Post by: Chubbs on Thursday, June 24, 2010, 11:23:23
Looking for a new car and have always liked the focus, but i am doing extesive research this time before i buy my new car due to the prior two monstrosities i've had.

So, basicly, people in the know how, what are the pro's and cons of a ford focus.

Thanks

They are nowhere near as good or as reliable as a Golf! I had one previously, there was nearly always something going wrong. Pro's good economy, and the heated front windscreen.

Certainly well reknowned for road holding and handling - best in class I believe. Driven both models, original and Mk II, both seem sound.

Ask Herthab.

IMO it depends on how old a focus you are looking at?  The older type focus seemed to me very much to be designed for the lady, very upright seating and not too great.

The more recent focus of the past few years though has improved big time.  Next time we have a focus on hire I'll let you have a spin!

With my budget i should be able to afford something around the 4/5 year mark

I've had two (51 and 52 plate). One was brilliant and no trouble, the other a compete shed. If it's been looked after and the engine looks nice and clean (the shed had a dirty, rusty engine) then you should be fine.

I bought my Father in law a '56 Focus Ghia - low mileage and immaculate condition

Honestly, the thing was brilliant !  Held the road well, had some uuuummmph when needed, very comfortable to sit in, lots of leg room in the back for a smallish car...

I can't speak highly enough to be honest...

And unfortunately after circumstances took their toll, when we came to sell it the residual value after more than a year was excellent - it only depreciated £300 in over a year....

I've got a TDCI 1.8. It's an 03 plate that I bought 16 months ago.

In that 16 months, due to work and football, I've driven just over 45,000 miles.

As long as it's regularly serviced and you don't thrash the fuck out of it, it'll run forever.

Parts and servicing are dead cheap and the MPG's good too, works out at 10p a mile in mine.

cheers for the help guys, ive found a 04plate VW Golf 1.9 TDI but its a bit pricey for what it is, 5,995. Will try and budge him on it, not looking to get much for the pug and not many people will take it p/x if they have to come and get it.

Nice to drive but I find mine nearly always has something wrong with it! I'd get a Golf instead if I were you.

OK if you have the money for an ST. Those things are far from cheap.

St170s aren't that expensive. The mk2 ST's probably still are!

I have had a Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec, bog-standard vehicle (except it happens to be automatic), 04 reg, since summer 2007, and had absolutely no problems with it at all.  It is practical, comfortable, and even with automatic, reasonable fuel consumption.  Not great acceleration, but I have been entirely happy with it.

For an 04 plate Golf, that seems quite reasonable, dependent on condition/mileage. If I had 6k slushing around, I'd seriously consider that, subject to negotiation of course. I've seen T plate Golf TDi's advertised for between 3 and 4k.......ridiculous
