Title: Recommend A Comedian.
Post by: herthab on Monday, August 3, 2015, 07:14:05
Now I spend more time driving than actually doing my job I'm looking to put more than just music and podcasts on my iPod. Can anyone recommend any stand up that I can download? I've got pretty varied tastes, so any suggestions welcome.

Ivo Graham is a Town fan, so you should probably get his stuff on that alone.

Wil Hodgson local comedian is brilliant for story telling tales of a small backward Wiltshire town, very good mate of mine too.

Matt Price is also excellent with a lot of material available.

Best for stand up....Jimeoin, Martin Mor and Micky Flanagan are brilliant live.

Off to the Edinburgh Comedy Fringe next week again for the 9th year running, can get you some mp3s of them all if you need mate.

Heard him a couple of times on Fighting Talk, I'll have a look and see what's available. Thanks.

He was on the train back to London after the Sheffield Utd play-off game.

that's as interesting as that anecdote gets!

These are worth a listen too, if you're a fan of Peter Cook.

Improvised with Chris Morris, a couple of years before Cook died. Must be available for download somewhere. Morris's 'On the Hour' would also be a good listen.

If you love(d) Bill Hicks, I would thoroughly recommend George Carlin.

You'd probably like Doug Stanhope if you go for Hicks/Carlin types.

Post by: Amir on Monday, August 3, 2015, 13:48:32
Doug Stanhope just goes that bit too far for me on occasion. I fully believe you can laugh at anything, as long as there's a point to what you're saying and you're not solely saying it because you should be allowed to.

Daniel Kitson is, to my mind, the greatest stand up working today. Me and my mates have followed him round the capital to gigs for years. He doesn't do TV, after an awful experience on Peter Kayes Phoenix Nights, but he does have some recordings of his shows (as well as some of his plays) are available on his website

http://www.danielkitson.com/audio.html

Yeah, Daniel Kitson is great.

Kitson is ace. I saw him do a play called tree with tim key in January. Never seen his stand up but have the recording, really really good. As a lefty I do like mark thomas. He has some good ones available as well.

I'm not a big fan of his but Mark Thomas... his Radio 4 Special on his Dad and the Opera was very very very good.

both Moving and funny at the same time

Another one for Kitson here. There are loads of others who are worth a look, like Sara Pascoe, Bridget Christie , Rob Delaney, Andy Zaltzman and Nick Doody who I've like when i've heard bits of but never seen whole sets. Then there is Stewart Lee...

Title: Re: Recommend A Comedian.
Post by: PetsWinPrizes on Monday, August 3, 2015, 16:26:23
There's plenty of Stewart Lee shows available for download I think

I saw Delaney recently, and was a bit disappointed with his set*, I do love 'Catastrophe' though

*Bridget Christie was supporting, and she was excellent

Another Kitsonite here. Not just his comedy, his one man play about two lives was funny and emotional... Beautifully done.

Milton Jones is a favourite, too.

Johnny Vegas stand up is also excellent.

Of the 'panel show' circuit, Rich Hall is best. His American Pop-culture BBC documentaries have been great too.

Rich Hall is good in panel shows. He tends not to say much, but he pops up with one comment and steals the show.

Trevor Noah. I've seen a few bits recently on YouTube, what I've seen is very funny.

Title: Re: Recommend A Comedian.
Post by: StfcRusty on Friday, August 21, 2015, 18:39:01
Trevor Noah is probably the best comedian I've seen live.   Thought I wouldn't like him but last year the funniest stand-up I saw was Russell Kane.

Comedy is very subjective of course but for live mainstream acts I've seen, I've really enjoyed Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand, Jimmy Carr, Frank Skinner, Josh Widdicombe and Katherine Ryan.  Less mainstream but very funny live -> Henning Wehn, Paul Chowdhury and Marcel Lucont (a parody Frenchman).

I also agree with those who recommended Mark Steel and Mark Thomas, if you like lefty-comics.  Seen both several times and always entertaining.

I haven't seen them live but think Chris Rock and Louis CK are both very sharp (for Americans..).  I would highly recommend the TV series, Louie (starring Louis CK) too.

As for Chris Ramsey, I'd have preferred to have seen our former right-back in stand-up...

Get in the sea!

I did say comedy is very subjective!  "My Family" got a prime-time slot on TV for years whereas it was the sort of piss-weak comedy I loath.

"Little Britain" won awards. That was atrocious.

As someone said, comedy is subjective.

Bill Hicks was absolute quality. Way ahead of his time.

Ditto George Carlin. He made his name as a relatively anodyne standup artist in the 70's, and became legendary in his later years after he gave up the booze and drugs.

Jim Jeffries is a very clever comedian. His on-stage persona comes over as him being a loud-mouthed, uncouth Aussie, but he's is extremely sharp.

Chris Rock, Bill Burr and Ricky Gervais. Brilliant.

It's a bit early to be flagging this up but there WILL be a Chippenham
Comedy Festival next year on 8th and 9th July at the Old Road. Acts confirmed include Stewart Lee, Andrew O'Neill and myself. Tickets will be onsale nearer the time but I thought it would be useful for people to know that it's happening.
