I think this thread has probably run its course, but sod it, I've been drinking. I always make this point to the "its just a shortened version of Pakistani" crowd - when you use that word, do you honestly know that the person you are speaking of/to is from Pakistan, or is it a judgement based on skin colour? I have white skin. So do many French people. And many Germans. And many Finns. And many Canadians.
While I'm ranting, I'd also like to argue that saying that you don't mean any offence is a nonsense - offence is taken, not given. If I meet you in a pub and call you a c**t, and then say I meant it harmlessly, you may well still be offended.
I'd also like to add that I am enjoying a lovely Shiraz with some Oak Smoked cheddar. Lovely.
