Title: WREXHAM vs SWINDON MATCHDAY THREAD
Post by: Northern Red on Friday, September 8, 2006, 23:01:39
So here we are, today's the day (just). Possibly our toughest game yet.
Away at Wrexham who've conceded one goal at home and not lost (only 3 games but still).
Perhaps half an eye is on the game on Tuesday against the McDonald's franchise...

News on the team from BBC Sport
Swindon boss Dennis Wise will be without Jamie Vincent (Achilles) and Andy Monkhouse (hamstring).
Captain Ady Williams (knee) is another absentee for the Robins and Jerel Ifil is suspended.

Nothing we didn't know really. Just waiting to see what the defensive line-up is.
Given everything I'll take a draw, back at 3pm.

Todays defence still worries me a fair bit. Hopefully I have nothing to fear!

C'mon Swindon!

Come On Town!

I'd be happy with a draw, i guess. Although it would be a shame to see our winning run, end. (Obviously)

On the official site it doesn't mention Williams as a doubt - maybe it's just an oversite, but maybe he's OK...

Williams trained yesterday. Lets see if there is a reaction to that in his knee today. More a slight doubt than an absentee.

No, not yet. Had a bit of rain yesterday (just enough to dampen the roads for an hour), which was a bit of a shock ! Weather is on the change now. Gonna be low 70s with 40% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon - Typical autumnal weather. Must be pretty pleasant where you are at the moment ?Humidity should have evaporated and the wearing of snorkels outside outside to breather is not normally required after August is it ?

It was always going to be a hard game - they gave it a shot.

Putting this behind us, we look to the slightly more important game on Tuesday.
1st against 4th (realistically the best bet for the championship title). It's a 6 pointer and all that.

Sorry for starting the thread and buggering off, went to see Carlisle vs Northampton (1-1) as it was nice sunny day up here.

Interestingly there's only one league game I haven't been at or listened to on the radio - Hmmm I'll be listening on Tuesday without a doubt  :D

Ah well, we deserved to lose today. Wrexham got the ball down and passed it well, got it out wide and their two wingers (no idea who they were) were very very good today. No complaints about the actual result. Fully deserved and their penalty was a penalty no complaints.

A few things though....something that really really grates me is...defender are aloud to use Lee Peacock as a ladder, all the do is climb on him, foul him and pull his shirt yet they seem to get away with it....the minute Peacock dares challenge them the ref seems to blow up for a foul, it wasnt just today. Its been every single ****ing game

The ref was usless and 2nd half was doing everything the home crowd wanted. In my opinion Wrexham should have a player sent off...Lee Peacock turned their number 2...and got pulled back when through on goal and number 2 was the last man...then a few minutes later he went in over the top of the ball and got Aaron Brown in the shin...should have been his second yellow and the ref bottled it....things like these change games...but I am a bit shocked he stayed on

Our 2nd 'goal' right before half time....Chritian Roberts never offside in a month of sundays. I guess Lee Peacock also ran in to the box....and I think he was offside....but Roberts took it on and Peacock didnt get a touch...depends if you class him as active or not....

Too much hoofball and not enough midfield from us today, we never looked like scoring.....only shot we had was a must be close to 40 yards free kick from super Paul Evans...however saying that, like Hartlepool despite alot of possesion and getting the balls out wide Wrexham didnt create that many chances....if we hadnt of had a mental two minutes I think we could have held on for draw or even won.

Still good luck to Wrexham this season, first team we've played that wanted to play football this season.

Also it was nice to see Paul Evans and Darren Ferguson getting stuck into each other, proper hardman tackles flying it...they both got up shook hands on got on with it, real men.

Minor setback, but one defeat in every 7 should see us through.

Still believe we'll do it....

Pretty much spot on there, DV.  I'm not sure their right back deserved to be sent off, that's about it.  If we'd have carried on the same way in the second half he probably would have done, as he looked constantly harrassed the first 45.

First half was scrappy but we gave as good as we got, not sure about the offside, didn't think Roberts was off either.  After that we were just second to everything, ince was unfit, and we looked pretty impotent.  Would have rather seen Fola come on than anybody.  Their left winger did have a good game(Jack Smith saw to that more than anything), and I would have had Ferguson as MOM.

This is the sort of thing that can happen away from home. That linesman gave one dodgy throw in to us, and the Wrexham fans in that main stand got on his back straight away. I cant believe that Roberts goal was off, it took an eternity to get through. So in some ways the home fans saved them. And Roberts should have gone down for a pen, same as their player did.

Then second half we got absolutely battered, so no complaints there. A 2-2 draw would have been fairer.

Was getting sick of some of our fans singing ' we are invincible' and champione shit as well. Made us look a right bunch of idiots when they stuck that winner in, and didnt they celebrate it. Hopefully get better backing for the lads on tuesday now our fans realise we're not invincible.

On a big plus note, really enjoying the big games that being at the top of the table brings us. Teams and fans looking forward to play us, big attendances from home fans and good support from Swindon. Ive got to say, those Wrexham lads to the right went fucking nuts when the winner went in, the bastards! Hope our stands look as mental as that when we score against Mcdons on tuesday!

Just seen the 'Championship' on ITV.

What a cracker for the first goal - Evans is god.
The second 'goal' - Roberts was a mile onside, Peacock was mile offside. Peacock imo was active as he was running for the ball and was beaten to it by Roberts. If Peacock hadn't run it would have counted.

Penalty was a penalty, second goal took a wicked deflection off our defender, which meant Brez was wrong footed, he seemed to have the original shot direction covered.

Peacock is surely not active. He did not touch the ball, he did not stop anybody else touching the ball....
Roberts ran through and whether or not Peacock went for it, Roberts was going to score. Which means Peacock's actions did not affect the game.
Well, not until the lino gave it offside

Sorry I disagree, if Peacock is running towards goal, towards where the ball is going, a defender has to cover him, which makes him active. Thus offside.

Any neutral fan would say offside.

Not seen it yet (recorded Championship so will check later) but if as NR says Peacock is running for the ball, he's spot on, Peacock is active for precisely the reasons NR says. Don't suppose you fancy signing up as a L2 ref do you NR? You seem to know a damn sight more than most of them at this level!

Having just seen the Roberts disallowed goal it's one of those things. Some Linos/refs would have let it stand. The whole offside if 'active' nonsense makes it too subjective to gain any consistancy.

Great goal by God. Wish I'd seen that one live. Can we have another Tuesday?

At the end of the day the prat should've realised that Roberts was onto it, and put his hands up to say "I'm inactive" and stopped running. He's to blame here, the lino did his job correctly. That's one of the few times I'm taking the lino's side.

Peacock was about half a yard away from the ball when Roberts scored, it had to be offside. Peacock's like McDermott was, it's like watching someone run in slow motion

Just watched the highlights...although its academic now, Peacock wasn't interfering with play - the defender was tracking Roberts and Peacock was unmarked at the backpost. The lino wasn't at fault really though - there was no way of telling who would put it in and Peacock did run in as if he wanted to finish it off - it may be instinctive but he has to take some of the blame. But the ref should then have consulted the lino and let the goal stand.

As for Brownlie's miss at the end......

Title: WREXHAM vs SWINDON MATCHDAY THREAD
Post by: Frigby Daser on Sunday, September 10, 2006, 19:17:13
...and I'd assume Ady Williams has been instructed to sweep up behind Nicho, who goes to the ball.

On the first, if the ball had been down the middle then Williams would've been there, and for the second notice that the first ball in Nicho went to challenge - so Ady Williams had to be deeper in behind.

Peacock didnt touch the ball

Peacocks run didnt obstruct the keepers path to the ball

Peacocks run didnt obstruct the defenders path to the ball

Plus look where the linesman is standing, edge of the box....and Wrexham took the resulting free kick from Roberts starting position.

My first away game of the season and our first loss :( i'm blaming myself!

Have to say though that it was probably a fair result,we just couldn't get the ball in the second half, the boyo's were all over us,bastards! No problems with the penalty, the bloke was looking for it but it was a easy decision for the ref,Brez was lucky to stay on the pitch.
Evans goal was absolute quality  :D As for the Roberts off-side goal,i'm pretty sure the lino was bullied into it by the Wrexham fans behind him, cause it looked ok to me[admittedly from behind the goal]..but not a lot we can do about it really. The run had to end sometime, wish it hadn't happened when i was there though!

My gut feeling is that the offside decision was correct so I'm gonna keep the ball rolling...!

Interfering with an opponent means:
Preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or movements
or
making a gesture or movement which, in the opinion of the referee, deceives or distracts an opponent.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/trebblej82/1-1.jpg

I think at this point to claim that Peacock isn't distracting the goalkeeper would be ludicrous considering either of them could have knocked the ball in..

Absolutely correct decision in my eyes.

Think that's sort of the point. It's much harder for the keeper if he doesn't know which one of them is going to do something. He has 2 players to read and not one.

He doesn't have to touch the ball I'm afraid:

A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by:

    * interfering with play
      or
    * interfering with an opponent
      or
    * gaining an advantage by being in that position

interfering with an opponent

Interfering with an opponent means:
Preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or movements
or
Making a gesture or movement which, in the opinion of the referee, deceives or distracts an opponent.
