Title: Swindon Town v Millwall Official Matchday Thread
Post by: FreddySTFC! on Saturday, March 25, 2017, 08:28:12
Is this actually happening? It's nearly 8.30 & one hasn't been started. Apathy has reached a whole new level. Can't be arsed to go all Shaw Rosso so will simply predict Town 1 Millwall 3. Steve Morison & Lee Gregory to bully our 'defence' & another nail to be firmly entrenched in the coffin that is relegation.

A few good spells but ultimately Millwall's averageness will be more than enough.

For the first time since v Huddersfield under Malpas I'm not atttending voluntarily. Then I went to Wembley to watch England instead, this time I'm cutting the grass and tidying up the garden. I can't be done with all the unpleasantness surrounding the chavvy cunts that are Millwall. I didn;t even clap when we scored against Sheff Utd and I'm really struggling with giving a fuck. I'll probably be back for the last 3 home games and next season but I am totally fucked off with things.
I think the next stage for me is to fight for the club I love. This will mean trying to help remove Power and the fucking mug dof but today its the garden.

Just about to leave home, more a feeling of obligation than expectation.

I'm sure most of us expect to lose, some hold out hope we might win, but it feels a growing majority that just want this season over.

Swindon 1 Millwall 2

Not a bad half from #stfc. Even showed what passing with a bit of pace can do in the last 5. Milwall=lump it forward, could work to be fair

They are very organised, as soon as they lose the ball they are back into two banks of four. So by the time we have farted about with the ball they are back waiting for us.

As batch says they look to get the ball forward quickly to Gregory.

Just the sort of football that does well in Div 3

Post by: joteddyred on Saturday, March 25, 2017, 14:30:00
Some decent passing and a bit of urgency towards the end of the half, but other than that there's beena lack of movement on our part and the usual indecisiveness generally leading to the ball being given away.  Of course Williams now has the opportunity to give another uninspiring half time team talk!

A fair number of ST holders by us have given it a miss today. Also, nobody round by us has renewed as yet. Anyone seen anything in relation to renewal numbers?

Take the context of the league table out of it an look at the game in isolation for a minute.

This was a game we never really looked in trouble in. Millwall were proper shit today, they had two tactics 1. Lump it forward to try and get in behind our central defence. 2. Be a bit niggly against a very inept ref.

Tactic 1 looked like it would work early on as we got away with a couple of their hoofs leaving us 1 on 1. But aside from that we looked solid. The age old problem of not getting the ball forward quick enough was still evident so its fair to say Millwall initially coped just fine with our attacks too as they got numbers back. They also had a couple of big lumps in the back 4.

But as the half went on we showed a bit more about us, passing it a bit quicker and starting to knock on the door of the Millwall defence. Unfortunately half time came and stopped that.

All the way through the second half you just knew Millwall were there for the taking. If they played like this every week they'd be in the relegation mix. We started to mix it up a bit ourselves and Williams went for it by bringing on Noris and Brophy. We weren't exactly creating and missing loads, but we were the team that was going to score - although obviously I expected us to concede under such circumstances. We also gave a bit of the niggle back.

And when Ajose almost created a chance that someone (? Colkett?) took and blazed over it looked like being a 0-0 at best, shooting ourselves in the foot by an obvious cock up aside . But the inevitable loss didn't come, and at the end the ball broke in the box to Thomas in injury time to side foot it home.

We deserved it. I forgot how good winning feels.

So in the context of the game a good day, I'll enjoy it. Until I look at the league table tomorrow.
----------
Ince and Conroy standout for me.
Thomas probably had his best game in a Town shirt - very limited going forward (goal asdie) but did OK defensively.

Please can Gladwin be injured for a few weeks...
Also, I assume Thompson is injured?

Cannot believe we have beaten a side with 16 unbeaten games and just gets to three pages - apathy reigns!!  Deserved to win, the longer the game went on it seemed Millwall withdrew into their shell and didn't really go for it.  Ironically, i thought the goal was scored by the worst player in a Swindon shirt, others may well disagree!  Was surprised Goddard was subbed, he seemed better than Thomas - who should have scored 5 mins before.  Thompson withdrew because of the old heel injury apparently.  Good to see we didn't play back quite so much, in fact not at all in the first half .  Ince was immense for us!!

Ince brilliant. Conroy and Branco also excellent in defence. Vigs only 1 shot to save which is a rarity. struggled to create too much meaningful and neither team sparkled but think win was deserved and even we seemed able to hold onto a lead for 30 seconds today. Thought Thomas was his usual invisible self but all credit for a nice calm finish - thank God chance at end didn't fall to Branco or Norris.

Today was another example of how shit this league is.  Millwall unbeaten in 16 games and in the play off places didn't have a shot on goal.

We deserved to win, but I couldn't help but think we'd probably concede at the death.  Nice that it was the other way.  Can't beat a last minute goal.  It's that little glimmer of hope again and the 'what ifs' that kills you.

The worst player on the pitch got the winner.

Probably too late to save us but a deserved win all the same.

Hope those 3 points lost fuck em.

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Millwall Official Matchday Thread
Post by: WEBBERhyde on Saturday, March 25, 2017, 20:07:16
Gave today a miss, largely due to being a bit ill at the moment but partly because of the wierd kickoff time, the fact millwall are twats and general apathy towards our results and ability at the moment. Wasn't expecting any of those three things to make me feel much better, so didn't warrant buying a ticket and going.

Didn't even bother listening on the radio, so was pleasantly surprised to look down at my phone and see a notification of the Ft result. Nearly fell off my chair when I saw it was a last gasp strike from Thomas, of all players.

All it's done is piss me off further, though. Again it shows just how shit this league is, and how we'd be in a much more comfortable position if it wasn't for a ridiculous ability to fuck up royally in 3 out of every 4 matches.

All well and good getting results against teams high up the league but it counts for fuck all this late in the day after we've cocked up most of the matches against team around us in the league. Those 5 points dropped at home to Bury and Oldham are going to be the results that'll haunt us.

Still, the hope for a miracle gets extended for another week.

We did, and both of those things are still true nonetheless. But I enjoyed today (mostly). The first half was utterly dire, two poor teams who both looked like they were trying not to lose rather than win or even really play the game. But then it seemed like about 5-10 mins before half time we suddenly went "Hang on, this lot are as flat as we are" and that seemed to liven us up a bit. Continued that into the second half and played better than they did, without being desperately great, but they were still flat. It was my eldest's first game all season, after considerable cajoling, and he said the minute before the board went up "We're going to win this in the 3rd minute of injury time". Pretty sure he was taking the piss tbh, but he's now going round like he's Mystic Meg and we celebrated the goal like maniacs. It won't keep us up, of course, and we'll be shit again for the next 3-4 games before we pinch a point (or maybe even 3!) from someone, but for about 30 seconds this afternoon, I celebrated  a late winner with my boy like we used to when he was 6 (except for the bit where I used to lift him on to my shoulders) and it felt absolutely bloody glorious. I'll take that right now.

Can't agree on Thomas being the worst player on the pitch. He offered better shape for the team and ran back into position throughout.
He offered far more than Gladwin has these past few matches in his overall game and workrate.
Must add Conroy is certainly a good purchase it seems.

I give you, 2005/6:

Especially post January once we'd sold Fallon. That was the team that went down under Iffy, and I'm pretty sure that squad would have gone down under Antonio Conte as well.

I think about only Jack Smith, Hameur Bouazza and Sean O'Hanlon played at L1 or higher level afterwards. Oh, and Cureton, who had a career renaissance after being rubbish for us.

Millwall playing compacting knowing we'd likely go for broke in the last ten, (whilst our tactical geniuses headbutted the panic button).
Delighted we won, shame Thomas scored though as he was poo on the ball (but on reflection appeared to offer decent shape when we had no possession).
Thought Colkett was trying to play at a different pace to the rest of the team but he passes appeared very forced and usually poo

Don't be fucking stupid. Colin Heath was one of the worst players I've ever seen play for us, especially for a so called Man United loanee, We also had Patrick Collins at the back who was utterly inept. Rhys Evans was a terrible keeper who couldn't kick (some bollocks about 1 leg being longer than the other). We had players like Aaron Brown and Cureton who didn't give a fuck and the less said about Tony Thorpe the better. Then you had Ricky Shakes who was better at dancing than he was at football. Add in the likes of Trevor Benjamin, Chris McPhee, walking pace Whalley and Albert Jarrett and you create a truly awful footballing monstrosity. The 7-1 defeat at Forest was a total humiliation!

Surprised at how insipid Millwall were and after Harris bigging the game up as their biggest of the season.

Thought Conor Thomas had a decent game and finished well for the goal.

Gives us a faint glimmer of hope.

Interesting to see how the team cope with some German efficiency next.

Thomas had a decent game? Fuck me...our standards have dropped through the floor, he was fucking awful.

Ince head n shoulders over anybody on the pitch....we need three of him..

Was resigned to the drop before yesterday and still think we're odds on to be playing in the basement division next season. Having said that, I really enjoyed yesterday's game. My lad's home on leave and it was the first win he's seen for a couple of seasons!

One of those games where the result overshadowed the performance. I went home very happy although thinking the inevitable 'what if/if only...'.

Millwall looked as though just by turning up would bag them three points. They must have had a very off day. Still, it was good to see them get nothing against a poor side heading for the fourth division.

Fleetwood attracted Rosler, because although on the outside they appear small..... in fact they're light years ahead of STFC. Here's their training/academy facility.....

Asked the same question myself, training on a 3G pitch is not conducive to keeping body and limbs totally fit!  They used to go to Highworth for a light session on a Friday but understand that is now done at the CG!

not been since Chesterfield but, as a proud moaner, all yesterday shows is that a new manager in January could have had us with a genuine chance of escaping the drop and doubtless better season ticket sales - thanks Power.

Have I missed something or did we have the same manager we did in January

We won with the same apparent horrible human we've had all season

I think its quite telling that we win and there are just 6 pages (7 now) of the matchday thread but when we were beaten by Sheff Utd there we 15 pages, Bradford 13 pages, Port Vale 13 pages, Chesterfield 16 pages....

The forum definately gets busier when we have lost.

No great surprise really, there are certain people who only post when we lose so they can have their 'I told you so' moment. I've pretty much stopped checking on here after defeats now.

Funny how people react differently. I can never even be arsed to watch Match of the Day if we lose, just totally distance myself from football until the next morning when I've slept it off.

i need to vent on the internet for a couple of hours, its very  calming. eventually.

put my thoughts on the game in this thread, i guess apathy  has hit a high point as people accept we are down. got to be sub 6000 town fans at the game the last couple. the club have even stopped announcing # away fans.

but yeah, lose Saturday and the thread will be bigger.

I don't think it is down to winning or losing tbh at this stage, people are just resigned to the facts and want this season over and done with.

Let's face it, you could copy and paste one of our match day threads onto another and it wouldn't be too dissimilar, apart from the names..

There isn't much more to be said, it has been said numerous times by numerous posters all season..

The club have a got a huge task to pull the fans back up and on side, and it not going to happen in Lge 2 (unless they piss it, which they won't)

I took the lad on Saturday, it was our first game of the season, and I enjoyed it!  I liked the look of Conroy and thought Ince looked quality as others have said.

We still caused all our own problems with over playing in the wrong areas, there was one good example in the first half where Branco had a free kick just inside our half, and you could see him looking round for the short pass, but everyone was marked so he rolled it to someone a foot or so away, and got it back but they put them under pressure and the ball was given away, and 10 seconds later we were scrambling the ball behind for a corner.  I like nice passing as much as the next fan, but it needs to be purposeful not just a default position.

I loved Vigs reaction when the goal went in, it showed the passion and commitment that we need.  I got so excited when we scored that I started singing along to Feeling Gladys All Over

You should have gone earlier in the season to see some better examples of arsing about with the ball at the back. Saturday was one of the best yet for lack of it. Down to the odd one or two.

Conroy has reduced the count, he seems to know when to gunt it

I wouldn't be too displeased with Conroy and JSW as the pairing next season.

He spent the early part of the season in the Conference did he not? Next season I'm sure he'll be coached into giving the ball away don't you worry!

Way too inexperienced, but agreed its not difficult for Conroy to look ok, look at the crap he is playing with

I remember JSW being OK, but he's got a lot to do physically to get back.

Would love an experienced combative type, but we won't get one so....

I quite liked JSW from memory. We seemed to be a bit more assured at the back with him in the side. Not saying he's the saviour but can't remember him having a particularly bad game before Pope crocked him

Can't agree with you there PTP, Thought he looked a good, player and not frightened to get stuck in.  Having had non-league experience should also help,  Remember league two is only one step up from that. Probably knows how to handle the physical game much better than some of our overpaid, overated squad.

JSW got ripped a new one by Cov first gqme, so much so that he had to change sides with Thomas. I donl't think any of us have seen enough of him to make a proper judgement. He looked ok with the ball, positionally dodgy and physically weak but seemd decent at nicking the ball rather than full blooded challenges so maybe not positionally inept at all times. I'd be inclined to give him another go but we're really going to need an ugly brute who gets his head on the ball and foot on the player.

Not sure you can pin that on JSW as we were left with gaping holes in our defence and they were threading balls through to an extremely quick striker.

I'd like to think they'll give JSW a chance to prove himself.... he's out of contract, so even a monthly rolling job would be fair enough.

I wasn't convinced by him... the sort of OK with the ball but not much of a defender, a poor man's John Stones.  But worth a go as defenders can improve with experience.
