Post by: sonicyouth on Saturday, May 21, 2005, 11:43:43
Just seen today's Adver, looks as if Smithy's on his way to City :crying: Sounds like a case of us not being able to match a decent offer.

This was always likely to happen.....certainly King ballsed up big style here.

I'm surprised though that having said he'd keep Howard if Smith went,  then promptly loses both.....making himself look even more stupid quite unnecessariiy.

it will be sad to lose him but king has proved he can bring players of smiths quality in before

If we lose Smith it is a major setback as he is the first goalscoring midfielder we've had in a while.  It is difficult to blame him for leaving after being treated poorly by King (should have had a proper run in the team long before the second half of this season) but going to City is a real kick in the teeth.

Fuck Smith. He can fuck off with the rest of them who don't want to be here. I have faith in King to replace him.

I can't blame him really, he's probably been offered less money than he earns with his current contract and this is after he's proved himself to be a vital part of the first team.

Which will mean less people through the turnstiles initially, causing a panic in the boardroom as they receive less revenue, resulting in more knee-jerk reactions, such as ticket increases, selling a couple more players, offering even worse contracts next year (all reactive, none proactive!) and with it our chances of promotion

And then the rest of the players will probably slash their wrists leading the club do go bankrupt.

I do blame Smith to be honest, of all the out of contract players he's probably got the best offer, we're the only team he's played for consistently but if he's leaving it'll be because he's had a better offer than we can afford after saying he wanted to stay.

I'd rather Smith just said "I wanna go" instead of coming up with all this bullsh!t about repaying fans loyalty or whatever.

If he's repaying our loyalty by moving to City he can f*ck off.

Shame really, he'd be worshipped here next season.

He didn't -but he dropped him after Huddersfield when he came on and almost turned the game in 10 mins.

Title: Smith to City
Post by: Ben Wah Balls on Saturday, May 21, 2005, 18:36:37
Dropped him for all of one game.

Fact is Smith's played in 37 games this year, far more than he's played for any other team so far in his career, with the team doing so well last year I don't think he can complain too much about having limited opportunities then.

He'd not really done anything to show he should walk into our first team before joining us (2 starts for Sheffield United and a few loan appearances for Halifax and Clydebank) but as soon as he showed he was good enough he won a place in the side and has been ever present ever since. He should be fucking grateful.

If he stays he's a legend if he leaves he's a cunt.

Harsh. Would you stay if you'd been offered reduced terms despite the fact you'd proved yourself as a first team player, clearly worthy of an improved contract?

If he stays, I'll love him, if he goes then I blame King and the board. Not Smith.

To be fair, everyone else in the same boat.

Money talks and we ain't got none.

Title: Smith to City
Post by: Ben Wah Balls on Saturday, May 21, 2005, 19:26:34
Who says he's been offered reduced terms? If anyone's been offered a fairly decent deal it will be Smith as Howard wasn't offered anything to help pay for his offer.

He said after he got the offer it wasn't far off what he wanted and the board said there is room for some negotiation. Odviously we can't afford to offer much but we can guarantee he's going to be a popular player and he's likely to be ever present too. I won't think of him any different to Mooney if he goes.

Title: Smith to City
Post by: sonicyouth on Saturday, May 21, 2005, 20:05:03
Who says he hasn't been offered reduced terms? Everyone else has, I'm just applying that same logic to this situation. Based solely on performances, Smith deserves an improved contract. It's highly unlikely he will have got one, even with King gambling with Howard's future to improve the offer. Now we've lost both. You can't blame Smith for that.

thats right lets blame king and the board as usuall fuck it let them bankrupt the club for greedy bastards like smith who played well 2nd half coz he knew he was out of contract would city and wednesday be offering if he was still on our bench would they bollocks he was trying for himself not the club,on the other hand you duke who gives his all for this club  even if its not good enough least he tries and yet he will get slated week in week out its a fuckin joke, and before anyone says anything my personal opinion of duke is he isnt good enough but i respect the bloke for effort hope smith fucks off

Bit harsh there Deano.

Smith could only play well for the second half of the season because that has been his only run in the team. He has always played well in the reserves but he can only show his stuff when he has the oppurtunity.

Calm down dear, it's just a commercial!

If your coping mechanism for losing Smith is to call him greedy, then that's fair enough but it doesn't mean you're right. As I've already said in this topic, it's highly likely he was offered poor terms on a new contract in comparison to what he has given the team since King finally gave him an extended opportunity. I don't understand the relevance of your point about Duke, it's got fuck all to do with why Smithy's going so you've lost me there. Smith worked hard and it paid off, he got an extended run in the team, he scored goals and became an important player for us. The least he deserves is a decent contract and to slate him for leaving because he's had a better offer is daft.

37 games he played this.last season season he wasnt good enough howard played instead king proved this year that he was willing to play him if howard didnt perform ,ok being a bit harsh but i dont think the board and king should be blamed for everything

Post by: Ben Wah Balls on Sunday, May 22, 2005, 01:37:27
No I don't blame Smith for Howard leaving but then I don't really give a toss about Howard as he's not really worth a new contract anyway the way he's played for most of this year but I'll blame Smith if he leaves definitely.

Certainly makes more sense than blaming King, he's offered Smith the best deal he can, the fact that at one time he wasn't going to offer Smith a contract is irrelevant, Smith had played a fair few games at that point but hadn't looked that great, he's now proved himself and done enough to change King's mind.

I think it's more of a case that some fans coping mechanism for the mess the club is in is to blame everything on King, including stuff that is out of his control.

OK then. If King wasn't so pig headed and used Smith insted of ignoring him the reserves for a year and a half (for what I can only guess at was a personaltiy clash) we may have made the playoffs.

Without Smith our season was dead and buried. At least he kept us with an outside chance until the Hartlepool game.

We have no idea how much Smith was on, so to calll him greedy is plain wrong. I like my job, but I wouldn't stay in it if they offered me a massive wage cut, particularily if there are better offers out there.

ok i was a bit over the top last night ,fa cup final day, pub, drink, you know the rest but the point i was trying to make iis everyone here is loving smith for what he done but he done it for himself he didnt think he was being offered a contract here did he,and king for the first time admitted he was wrong by offereing a contract  no one will ever know why they clashed and its to easy to blame king but we dont know what happened and i cant help but feel that if he signs for another two years he wont perform at the same level as he wont be in the shop window, and what i said about david duke well like i said fa cup final day :D  :D

Yes even if the opinion is utter bollocks, someone can still have their say.

Of course Smith was trying to help himself. Having not been a first team regular he needed to prove himself to King. However he carried on playing that well because he was playing for Swindon not for anybody else. To a certain extent the same could be said of Parkin, who until joining Swindon had failed to set the world alight.

Nobody can be sure of the wage figures being offered but this is by no means a Tommy Mooney situation. I would be fucking disappointed if he went to City though :nono:

For what it's worth King hasn't helped one bit here.  Appreciate he has had his hands tied by the board and his budget has been slashed but to offer a player a one year deal when he was originally on a two as a relative unknown quantity is a tad backwards.

To then go public and start talking about signing Cureton and Thorpe is not the greatest of moves either.

If he goes, he goes and it’s likely he’s been offered a piss take contract and you can’t argue about that.  Losing Howard as well was another blunder we couldn’t have done with.  Yes he’s chubby and has been crap for a while but with no Smith there was a chance King may have an idea to play him back on the left and we may have seen some of that for of yester year.

And you know this because? You don't, you're just talking crap mate.

Of course he wanted a move away, he didn't really have any choice, King said he wouldn't be getting a new contract long ago. Obviously things have changed and he's been offered one but no one here knows the details of it, anyone would seriously think about moving to another club if they have offers. Gone are the days (did they ever really exist?) where players must be "in love" with the club, that's bollocks and not the way the world works.

But still, lets hope he stays :beers:.

Hypothetically, if the scum or city were an established Championship side and made a million offer he would go there in a flash.

Don't get me wrong I worship Parkin like everybody else but he doesn't love the club. He's just doing the job he's paid fucking well to do. And when a good enough offer comes in he'll do the same job for another club and not give a fuck for Swindon the same as I will not give a fuck for him.

Title: Smith to City
Post by: Ben Wah Balls on Sunday, May 22, 2005, 12:38:27
I'll give Parkin some leeway because he signed a new contract last year when he definitely could've got a better deal elsewhere and he's turned down a number of moves and not been angling for a move away, if we get a decent offer for him from a much bigger club he won't hang around but at least we should get some money for him. I wouldn't  be happy if he left us for nothing though or if he went to Oxford or City (luckily there is no chance of this).

It was reported in the press and on the radio a few days ago that Smith has now been offered a two year deal.

I can't see why talk of signing Cureton etc. would put him off signing, if anything this should encourage him.

I don't believe he's been treated badly here, we are the first club at which he's been a regular and he was a completely unproven player when he arrived.

Some players should/will be supported where ever they go.  Parkin is one of those.

If Smith goes it'll be a kick in the teeth after what he has said, though I wouldn't blame him.  And as much as I hate City, at least they're not a bottom league club who would treat his signing as the biggest thing that has ever happened to them :winking:

Of last seasons crop I would say Turbo, Evans, Migz, Fallon, Smith and Parkin have good feelings for the club. A lot of the others dont really give a fuck. Will Roberts really be up for it next season?

thats right lets blame king and the board as usuall fuck it let them bankrupt the club for greedy bastards like smith who played well 2nd half coz he knew he was out of contract would city and wednesday be offering if he was still on our bench would they bollocks he was trying for himself not the club,on the other hand you duke who gives his all for this club even if its not good enough least he tries and yet he will get slated week in week out its a fuckin joke, and before anyone says anything my personal opinion of duke is he isnt good enough but i respect the bloke for effort hope smith fucks off

Spot on. And don't apologise for having an opinion either. If someone disagrees then fuck em.

Yes even if the opinion is utter bollocks, someone can still have their say.

Deanored, of course, like all footballers he was trying primarily for himself (whilst at the same time preventing the team finishing about 20th),his whole future was on the line. What the fuck else would he do? Not try?

I hope Smith stays but if he doesn't I wish him well where ever he ends up (even City).
the point im making is he couldnt give a fuck whether we finished 20th or 12the

And you know this because? You don't, you're just talking crap mate.

Of course he wanted a move away, he didn't really have any choice, King said he wouldn't be getting a new contract long ago. Obviously things have changed and he's been offered one but no one here knows the details of it, anyone would seriously think about moving to another club if they have offers. Gone are the days (did they ever really exist?) where players must be "in love" with the club, that's bollocks and not the way the world works.

But still, lets hope he stays :beers:.

I'm sobering up now and I admit I was a little harsh over Parkin. But Smith can fuck off for all I care.

if we are honest we are all gonna have our own opinions on what happens at this club and we all think we know a bit more than the next man i just think some players get more praise than they deserve and others get more stick than they deserve

Fucking hell, some of you are being a bit rabid over this

I can't say much else but if Smith does choose to leave, I'll wish him luck, just as I have done with every player bar Mooney. I don't care about City.

 :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

I still believe he cared where we finish (although I agree I'm just guessing like you), even if he'd made his mind up to leave. If he's as ultra selfish as you think then it looks better for him if the team finishes as high as possible.

From what I can make out, your criticising Smith for looking out for himself although you also accept that this is how the world works?

im not criticising him for that i am criticsing him for the big long speech he gave us about how much he cares,of course he,s got to think of himself but dont use the fans a club in a way to get what you want.parkin is prime example we all know what he wants he makes it clear smith and not just him say they want to stay when we know they dont .(or think we know)if my other posts suggest anything different sorry but like everyone says this is a forum for debate :D

Every player we lose because of poor contracts is down solely to our board. I will blame no-one else but them.

I believe some of the blame needs to be directed at the majority of the 200,000 people that live in this town of ours and don't give a flying fuck about the club.  These people who failed to support the club since the Premiership days need to take as much as the flack as the board.  If we had semi decent attendances we'd have the income to pay the players a decent wage.

I'll understand his (and Heywood's) reasons for joining city, but its not going to stop me giving them a load of shit next season.

I'll just feel better that way when we're fighting relegation.

You mean the fucking cunts who made most of our lives misery by queung up for Play off tickets last year.  Funny there were no queues this year eh?  These football fans really fuck me off, Swindon potentially could be without a league team in a few years and these people just don't seem to give a shit.  As long as Liverpool beat Milan on Wednesday, or Arsenal won the cup, that's all that counts.  What a load of fucking shit.

I blame the council, Rikki Hunt, Brian Hillier, Terry Brady, Grant Smith, Grant Smith's dad, Sandy Gray, inland revenue, Bristol city for trying to sign Smith, John Gorman, Steve McMahon, Colin Todd, Neil Ruddock, Bristol City for calling the derby game off, Jason Drysdale, Joey Beachamp, Adrian Whitbread, Mark Robinson and most of all Lifetime Red. I think the blame has to rest squarely at their feet.

I imagine Smith was just on the brink of signing the contract, had his pen ready but just logged on the adver forum saw one of lifetime red's topics and thought fuck me this guys a twat, I'm not staying here he'll probably start abusing me the first time I mess up.

There's a wage cap now. As turnover is down we have to slash wages anyway, although I can't be arsed to check our wage bill

Our wage bill was already one of the smaller in the Div, and well inside the planned parameters of the wage cap.....so its never been an issue for us.

Coolage  8)  I did think so, although our turnover is likely to be small and wasn't sure how much was going on wages
