Title: Wrexham v Swindon Town pre match drivel and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, 08:16:02
Actually looking forward to this game on Saturday now. Please don't lose this, it would be doubly unbearable.

Swindon win 2-1 att:10,288 (1,100 away)

Wrexham have had a reasonable start to the season including beating Wigan in the cup, and I do worry about our squad depth and fitness. Then again they conceded 5 on the opening day. I can see there being goals at both ends so I'll go for 2-2. Att: 10,309 (1,143 away)

Have plans on Saturday so will be missing this one. I actually think it will be a blessing in disguise as I have a feeling we might get 'beaten up' a bit.

My first game of the season. Haven't been to Wrexham since Evans banged in that 300 yard free kick and they gave us our first defeat in that Wise / Sturrock season. Obviously they're a bit more glamorous these days! Wrexham seem slightly vulnerable at the back but a big, well drilled unit overall who have some big fellas upfront that we'll struggle with. If Austin can get his shooting boots back on I think we'll have a chance but I'll go for a 4-2 Wrexham win. I'd be delighted with a point!

I was saying last night to someone 0-0 is the only result that could surprise me here.

I think we might lose this one. Would be delighted with a point.

Att:10,210 (1150 Swindon).

Still no idea what the score is likely to be yet. Wxm started off with 1 win, 1 draw 1 defeat scoring 8 conceding 8, vs us with 1 win and 1 draw from the first 2 league games scoring 4 and conceding 3.

Both teams drew in the EFL Cup against teams from L1, Wxm being home to Wigan and us away at Posh, both finished 1-1 but they won their shootout and we didnt.

They have spread their 8 goals in 4 games between 7 players.
Our 5 goals in 3 games have all come from different players.

They have kept 1 clean sheet in 4 games, we have yet to keep a clean sheet.

In their 4 games so far they average
48% possession per game
18 shots per game
7 on target shots per game
9 corners per game

From our first 3 games we are averaging
56% possession
21 shots per game
7 shots on target per game
7 corners per game

Stats seem fairly level but Wrexham will have the advantage of the home crowd, but we will be backed by a decent sell out following and hope we make some noise.

Amazing what a bit of exposure on Netflix can do for someone.

He has never struck me as being a particularly verbally articulate speaker or even much of a thinker.

He just seems to be a typical gobby Scouse scally who found an outlet in football.

I expect he has so many takes to tell about his 9 years as a lower league pro footballer :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

One thing I am interested to see play out with 'The Welsh Club'...

Wrexham's badge features the Prince of Wales' feathers and motto (Ich Dien), it is in a constituency that has voted for a Conservative MP and they play in (and to a certain extent rely on the patronage of) the English Football League.

However, under these owners, presumably because it plays to a Yank audience, they are really pushing a sort of Welsh nationalist agenda. Couple that with the signing of James McClean, not known for his love of this land, and you do have to wonder if they might alienate a good chunk of their real fanbase.

I have no great understanding of Welsh politics but as I say, curious how these things sit with one another.

Wrexham is hardly a Tory heartland area, 2019 was the first time they'd ever returned a Tory MP and they have little to no chance of holding it at the next election. I imagine most fans don't care too much either way - Mullin can say fuck the Tories all he likes if he scores 30 a season and McClean will be a fan favourite as long as he's playing well.

Yup, aware it isn't a heartland. Just saying they voted one in at the last time of asking, so it isn't a Plaid Cymru heartland either. They only got 6.4% of the vote in fact.

Have heard that the locals aren't happy at tickets being reserved for tourists, leaving about 500 for locals (not season ticket holders). Presume this will be resolved when the inevitable stadium upgrade/ new stadium is built.

Although at least Mullin will have a couple of chapters about Wrexham's owners and the trip to Vegas etc (although that should probably stay in Vegas)

Unsure if this is the start of a matchday thread or not but happy to kick things off.

2-1 Town
Austin, RHM (surprise return)
12,235 (1,034 Town fans)
Sorry for the quote MCRRed but matchday thread already in here.

I think we could be in trouble against Wrexham. Palmer is a handful.

Team wise I want to see Khan back in for Kinsella if fit. Think RHM might just be on the bench if we are lucky so only the one change from FGR for me, provided everyone else came through unscathed.

4-2 Wrexham.

Their squad really isn’t that great, especially with the injuries they have.

I have watched 20 min extended highlights of all the Wrectum games so far.

Foster for all his heroics does not look massively steady in goal.

The are slow in defence from what I have seen, put a quick player up front like RHM and they struggle on the deck.

They are not one of the better passing sides but get the ball forward very fast and play with a massive lump striker in Ollie Palmer who always is difficult to play against.

Wxm do play to his strengths with long high balls and extra long throw ins from Tozer, they push up the 3 huge CB's too all around 6 foot 3, I fear we will struggle against the aerial onslought as we often do with a small side.

Even though Genesini played well on Tuesday I think the extra height of Ward at LWB could be deployed, which I think would be harsh on Genesini.

If we keep it on the deck and press them with our own passing game we can get a result but dont let them pressure us with their more agricultural game, especially with a large home fan backing behind them.

I just saw that Wrexham are 'unable' to offer any ticket collection services so fans have to collect their tickets prior to arrival from Swindon. That does seem pretty backwards, I wonder why Wrexham are so unhelpful? (not that they have to be of course)

Also refusing to provide reprints, which I presume is why STFC weren't willing to post tickets out. Was a bit of a pain for me living in Cheshire. Thankfully my parents were able to drive in to collect my ticket and post it to me.

I suspect more with an eye on them going missing in the post and thus creating a further ball ache for the club (STFC) in being responsible for trying to sort that mess out.

Just out of interest, do we provide a ticket collection facility for away fans?

We got a ferry from Holyhead to Ireland earlier this year and decided to potter about in Holyhead for the day. What a horrible, bleak, downtrodden town. Walking through the town centre reminded me of walking from the Glue Pot to the CG. It was awful.

An unfortunate visual for many a nondescript town or port town.

Whenever I experience this kind of thing it always makes me think of [and somewhat in a fondly morbid way] 'Every Day Is Like Sunday by Morrissey

'Trudging slowly over wet sand
Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen
This is the coastal town
That they forgot to close down
Armageddon, come Armageddon
Come, Armageddon, come

Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey...'

‘ Just survived a scare this week having to find several
Million pounds to avoid getting into financial difficulties.
I had a coffee with their owner Clem Morfuni yesterday and can assure you he respects and loves what Wrexham are doing. He lives here in Sydney.
Not sure about the fans but I respect what he is doing to ensure the club survive
Have a bet with him on the result of just one dollar :-)’

I’m sure if had coffee with Clem he’d have known this ‘scare’ didn’t happen this week.

I'm not going to lie. I don't like Wrexham.

It's nothing against their 4-5k loyal core of fans who've stuck with them through the bad times. Fair play to them and they deserve some success.

It's more the 'brand' that's been created as a consequence of Reynolds. People from America claiming they now 'support' Wrexham? please fuck off. You don't support Wrexham at all. You're following them because it's convenient and trendy. If those owners were to leave and Wrexham fall away, they'd quickly find something else to become interested in. That's not football. A part of me does wonder if it even gets on the tits of some of the Wrexham fans.

The documentaries. Paul Mullin. The long throws. Ben Fosters go-pro and his stupid Youtube videos. The unbearable Ollie Palmer and the constant media attention. You wouldn't think there's 23 other teams in this league sometimes.

3-1 Town.

To fans of a certain vintage supporting a club is very different to what it has become now.  Brand is the word.  Not club.  Its like being into nike trainers.  Its horrible but its the modern world.  I spent a week at the ground doing the Kings of Leon shows in May.  I had to be paid very well to spend a week in Wrexham.

Anyway Disney Franchise 1, Swindon town football Club 1.

Pre match iechyd da! in The Elihu Yale.

First the train was running, then it wasn't, then it was.
Thank you RMT / Crosscountry, for nothing.
Change of destination after Brum, pile out at Shrewsbury if not wanting to end up in Aberystwyth. Who does?
The 2 coach trundler should be good fun on the way back south.
There was a time when the train timetable wouldn't allow for getting back from Wrexham on the same day.
Still, main thing is an hour of valuable drinking time hasn't been lost.

First visit here for me since 1995 & the 4-3 loss.
No recollection at all that our last visit here in 2009 was a 1-0 win in the FA Cup.
The Paul Evans strike in 2006 is always worth a view.

Not that bothered that Wrexham are part owned by a former Canuck with an eye for business opportunities.
As ever it's 11 v 11 and our opponents are not super heroes.

Starting to see an NBA & NFL presence in club ownership over here.
We can but hope that the Five Families might one day take an interest in an up & coming Soccerball enterprise.
Pay creditors, no problem, just make them an offer that they can't refuse.
Uppity fans. Fine. Leave a surprise at the end of bed during the night.
Just don't upset HMRC & nothing would stop us.

I think that we've done ok in 3 sided grounds in recent times?
Was encouraged on Tuesday that even when struggling in the first half chances were still being created
Would happily take a draw, but still hoping that any STFC related mass hysteria today is confined to the away end.
Limbs eh!? We'll see.

It was an absolute cracker of a free kick and he certainly meant it seeing the keeper off his line.

Kemp to bag one similar over Ben Fosters head would be great today.

Last time I went there we won 1-0 under Macari on the way to winning the championship in Div 4 in front of 1,767 with about 500 of them being Town fans. A win like that would be just the tonic against these affluent upstarts.

In the 36 meetings between the clubs Topwn have the slight edge as we have won 15, drawn 7 and lost 14 scoring 55 and conceding 52, thats 32 league meetings, 1 FA cup game and 3 league cup games.

In games at the Racehorse Ground Wrexham have the lead with Town only winning 5, drawing 4 and losing 10 times.

Having a look at squads, how the other half live!

Their fans moaning about having a small squad for the coming season, they have a 1st team squad of 33 players, 4 have not started a league game but including 5 goalkeepers!

We have a 24 man squad with 11 of those players having made sub 20 1st team league starts and only McEachran and RHM having started more than 10 league games. Including just 2 keepers.

Brann 0, Brown 0, Kanu 0, Minturn 2, Devine 1, Genesini 1, Ward 1, Mahoney 2, Cain 8, RHM 15 and
McEachran 17 league starts in total.

They are complaining they only have 24 fit players to pick from!  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

In the words of James "If I hadn't seen such riches I could live with being poor!".

Their fans love us it seems.

Quote
The Swindon lot are little slugs, little slugs with no personality who are just jealous of us because we're better than them at everything

Reading their forum they seem to be fairly arrogant and have a lot of bad takes about Wrexham imho.

According to one of them we sing about the IRA. What a strange thing to lie about.

Remember going there in the league many many years ago to see the reds play driving around the magic roundabout , apparently voted the 4th scariest junction in Britain.

Pretty standard stuff I would say. Lots of ignorant bollocks, some insight, usual cheap jokes{sheep, Rhyl (and Holyhead in this instance), Mullin envy, blah, blah, blah). No different from most other sites, even including this one tbf.

Changed their colours to red.
Named their mascot Rockin Robin
Hired a Flynn as a manager.
Are these guys Wrexham Wannabees?
Awaiting a docuseries called 'So long to Swindon'!

Just survived a scare this week having to find several
Million pounds to avoid getting into financial difficulties.

Not far off a tartan rug & thermos to be fair, but nah prefer to keep myself to myself while enjoying the local hospitality of wherever we happen to be.

Having said, a noticeable police presence in town or should that be city centre.
More to do with policing their twats I suspect.

We probably will unless we're doing really well and getting gates close to 11k.

15th for a ball forward dealt with comfortably by our defence.

Not managed to watch an awful lot of us so far this season but really impressed by that first half.

Midfield looks well balanced and we go forward with a purpose. Only fault so far is some of the defensive frailties from last season remain a bit but some physicality at the back will help that.

Got to give some props to Brewitt as well, had doubts on him coming into this season (and still do) but he’s dealt with Palmer quite well so far imo.

I did say that if FBT could not get suspended before Clatyon comes back that would be great but he must have a good 8 weeks left, so that clearly isn't happening.

I don't like the look of Benn at all, but to be fair to him, I've not seen him at CB yet.

Just need to keep attacking!!! Their defense is suspect

Attack is the best form of defence has never been more accurately portrayed than in this game…

Overall I think they played well.  Need to fix the mental let downs and have a killer mentality.   But if they can play with the intensity they did a lot of this match good things will come.  It is up to the manager to have them more nentally ready and phyched up coming out of the half.  That was what cost us this came  this has been a trait since I started watching. I put it on a manager to have his team ready for first 10 min of a half.
But there was a lot of good stuff overall

That's kind of what happens when you have a team designed to be on the ball not without it.  Wrexham were a bit of a one trick pony, but it is a very good trick - get that ball into a big man up top and create mayhem in the box.  We have nobody able to handle it - the fact of the matter is we could easily have conceded three or four more today as well.

On the plus side, we tore them apart every time we went forward with the ball on the deck.

Honestly do not know whether I am happy or sad after today's performance.  We look like we will score a lot of goals this season, we look like we will concede a lot.  I have no idea which way it will shake out over the course of the season though.

The backline and midfield is so porous.  Brewitt just likes to get in one on one tussles - think it tricks people into believing he is a good defender.  Malife wants to be attacking and FBT is a left back so plays with more freedom than you want from someone holding the line.  In front of them we have a team of tippy tappy midfielders who look great creating possession but no interest in digging in.  Kemp for example, two great goals, should have had one more and a couple of great balls into the forwards.  Then, with about 5 mins to go he gave away a foul by their left back corner and just stood there while Wrexham took the free kick and moved forward.  Wants to be attacking, not defending.

I suppose it's going to be fun and hair raising in equal measure this season unless we sign the three or so players we've been crying out for since January.

We did manage the game well for large parts and we were unlucky not to score more to kill it off.

But injury time, eh?  It seems like STFC is cursed for throwing away leads.  Thk God for the resilience at FG.

Utterly Deflated, but think it's going to be a rollercoaster this season, players looked fucked last 15-20mins, not sure why Flynn didn't use the subs (as they did), could have bolstered the defence as we were sitting back anyway, Austin couldn't even jump at the end!

I was telling anyone who would listen only 0-0 would surprise me, but I didn't expect that.

They'll be happier but its honestly a pretty damning look on both our defences if either of us are going to be competing at the right end of the table this season.

We had also brought Kinsella on, but I'm not sure anyone else we bring on does much to change the flow of the game to be honest.  It's not like we had any sort of physical presence to bring on or an old head with plenty between the ears.  We lack what we lack and we've not addressed it.  I presume we are just going with what we have and hope we score more than the other team more often than not.

Indeed, I thought Genesini did ok, Ward looked lost at LWB.

I wanted us to bring on Kinsella to at least try and shore up midfield earlier than he did.

It does prove that we are very very susceptible to crosses and any balls played high into our box, not enough height at the back for all the nice passing we need a dirty great lump to head it away against teams that bully us like Wrectum did.

Well, if you brought Wakeling on for Young or Austin then you might have had someone who could hurry the defence or could run onto a hoof! Both were dead on their feet. When that happens, Austin drops deep.

Last night I backed Swindon at 9/2 for £20.
Being a fan for 55 years I had the sense at 4-5 knowing Swindon and cashed out taking 82.75.

Flynn:
- Raw and hurting at 2 points dropped
- Dropped by ourselves
- Could have scored 7 or 8 and then gave it away.
- It wasn't a free kick at the end, it hit his shoulder
- Thought the ref had a good game. Not going to bash him
- Experienced players made mistakes
- We opened them up at will
- We were in complete control
- We gave them their first
- We were in complete control .The wind didnt help in the first half as we play it along the ground
- Flynn feels exactly the same as Hawes when talking about the disappointment of giving it away from 5-3.
- With 30 secs to go the ref sees a handball that wasnt a handball
- We needed to just see the game out
- No way in a million years we shouldnt have wont that game. But we didnt!
- Fans got their moneys worht, but should have had 3 points too
- Will work on things we need to do at key moments in the game
- Blowing a gale and they are set piece heavily reliant. Just needed to limit the amount we gave away
- Easy to say we need physicality (with remaining budget or loan budget), but we handled physicality from set pieces
- Physicality wasn't why we conceded 5. It was stupid mistakes. All we needed to do was clear the ball
- Can't wait for Jake Young to get fully fit as he is a talent
- RHM and Shade: Both are very close. Both should be back in training this week

Let’s be honest, after being 4.1 up it’s a terrible result,

If someone said 5 points from Crewe and home, Wrexham and Forest Green away you’d have taken it.

We look good, I’m happy with our start.

Can’t work out any of our backline to be honest, individually they all look comfortable at times but collectively just fall apart all the time. Even the keeper looks fine and a good stopper but hasn’t got anywhere near the 9 goals he’s conceded and quite often finds himself in no man’s land.  They are all just too prone to completely switching off.

Venks will probably have this stat but how many times since Christmas have we conceded 2+ in the second half to either draw or lose a match? It much be a pretty depressing number, the players just lack bottle and a composure when it really counts.

Nothing to do with having a big nasty centre half all about using your heads and managing the game.

We totally outplayed them first half, they out-muscled us second half.

If I had any tips re Wrexham’s defending, I’d say playing Tozer just because his throws carry a goal threat is outweighed by the fact he’s a useless, slow player.

To manage the game when in front near the end we need to be able to get the play up the pitch / into the opposition half. We don’t do this , and it’s a big part of why  we struggle to hold a lead.
The reason is we lack someone up front who can win /  hold the ball and take it to the corners when we clear it - so we drop deep, hoof it out and it comes back in.
In the Garner season we had Simpson and then Davison who could do this, Wellens had Woolley and Yates. None of our current forwards can really do this - RHM has the pace to take it to the corner as does Wakeling, but not really the physicality.
This would be on my list to remedy before the window closes (as well as strengthening central defence.

Defensively we are a shambles but when we get forward we are phenominal.

The amount of media coverage Wrexham had today was cringeworthy but if boot was on the other foot we'd be caught up in the euphoria like Wrexham fans.

Wrexham played ok in places but as always we played into their hands giving away unnecessary fouls. Their game plan was to give the ball to Tozer and lob it in and it worked.  Their fans are rightly on a high and reminds me of Reading in their hey day with Madjeski taking over as owner and we all know how that's ended.

A strange game, to put it mildly.

The promising thing for me is I think we have good players and the issues are mostly systemic - more time together and with the manager should improve things defensively. Should.

If we defend like that all season we'll go down. If we attack like that all season we'll go up. I think it's far more likely that we do neither but have a lot of fun (for neutrals!) getting nowhere in particular.

Should be seeing that out at 4-1 & 5-3.
I'm writing that off as one of those freak games that happen every now & then.
However a point away from home is always ok regardless of circumstance.
4 from 6 away, Tuesday & Saturday that's decent.

Win next Saturday & it becomes a very good start to the season.

Clearly there are issues & I trust Flynn to work on those.

New recruits in midfield & defence would need to offer more than just nastiness etc.
They need to be able to play and not being able to move the ball around might upset the dynamic of the team.

Anyway, 3 enjoyable games so far. Good stuff.

As disappointing as it is to not come away with 3 points from that. I’m going to try and look at things from a much more happy clappy perspective….

We’re unlikely to come across that kind of bombardment too often. Wrexham, especially at home are a different beast to most teams in this league, with a crowd that expects them to win every match at home and Tozer launching in throws like that at every opportunity.

We weren’t able to hold out but the way we made our chances, and were even unlucky not to score more, bodes very very well. If we can create even half the chances we did today, each game, I think over the course of the season we’re likely to gain more points than we drop.

Interesting that some are saying the pen was soft, from the camera angle it looks stonewall to me. When you grab that much shirt in the penalty area, you’ve got to expect to be in the shit. Really stupid from FBT considering Palmer was running away from goal.

The free kick did look very soft though. Also really disappointed to not see fresh legs coming on in that last 10 minutes to at least break the game up a bit. Wakeling harrying Wrexham players would have been very useful…they were shit on the ball under pressure earlier in the match. Fuck knows why we stopped trying to keep the ball in their half from about 85 minutes onwards also.

Football eh? :crash:

Didn’t go but listened and knew what was coming when it was 4-1 and they got a penalty. It’s so annoying that it was against Wrexham but I suppose it is a hallmark of the way they play. This game shouldn’t and won’t define the season and there are plenty of positives. Mahoney, Young and Kemp are looking like great acquisitions and I hope that we can secure their futures beyond the January window. We may have options to buy for some of them? Hard to know. Scoring 5 away from home in a 5 figure crowd is impressive. Our support were audible on the comms. I have faith in Flynn and he is making us a much more potent attacking force. The start to the season has surpassed expectations and it could be a lot worse for sure. Only fine margins lie between where we are now and second place in the league. We will be okay. Hopefully a couple more solid signings will make the difference.

A good day out, Town fans in excellent voice today, some serious noise being made! Absolute pandemonium when some of the goals went in. Said at halftime that even at 4-1 it didn’t feel enough. Team talk must have been easy for Parkinson, nothing to lose and throw everything at it. Ref was desperate to get them straight back into it with an extremely soft pen and you could feel the momentum swing straight away. Once getting the 5th we killed the atmosphere dead again and got a bit of control into the game. Felt nervous going into injury time, once they got the 4th it kind of felt inevitable. All be it the referee desperate to get a starring role in the documentary. Horrendous decision to give a free kick for handball. Massive punch to the gut but we move, there’s a decent team here. Few additions potentially and couple of tweaks here and there and we’ll be alright.

After seeing the goals back from some fan footage fucking hell the refs had an even bigger shocker than I remembered! FBT is fouled for their pen, the 4th is offside and the free kick for the 5th is a disgraceful decision. 100% on the Disney payroll.

Need a leader at the back imo. FBT is a LB playing CB, UGM is an attack minded RCB and Brewitt shows flashes but ultimately across a whole season is limited.

Kinsella can do what he can when he comes on and likewise for Austin from up front but it’s hard. Need a proper experienced and bastard type at CB who can organise and get ugly (competently, not Brewitt like) when needed.

That and another big forward is the difference for us atm. Our team with a Harry Smith type striker option and big, experienced CB probably go 9 out of 9 so far for points but enough to be positive about so far if we can fix that.

Watching live, I thought the penalty was a needless shirt pull by FBT, the 4th was a goal and the 5th was a dubious handball decision.

Having seen replays from various angles, I'd say the pen was 50/50 (both fouling each other and their player falls over when he realises the corner's going over everyone's head), the 4th is offside and the 5th is never a handball.

Fair play to Wrexham fans, decent atmosphere from them apart from the obvious lull when we were scoring for fun (without assistance from the officials).

Fucking hell- never a dull day on or off the pitch this season aye 😂. Couldn’t believe what I was watching first half, unbelievable. Bossed it would be under selling it, won absolutely everything, every goal was well worked. Players bang up for it, won absolutely every second ball. Coulda been 5 or 6. Awful defending from FBT and Hutton I think it was to concede goal.

Second half first 20 was just the teams flipping. Only thing I’d say is our defending was shambolic. Third goal we have 4 defenders running to the same man 😭. Battled really well though from 4-3 to get back to 5-3, kemp and young unplayable at times. Thought we’d won it when it was only 5 mins added time- I expected 10 mins! Think we’re unlucky with that free kick- refs just caved in. Not the worst point but disappointing to throw it away like that. Crying out for a brick Shithouse centre half now, we only have 1 out and out centre half who’s first team material (that’s no slander on UGM). FBT and Brewitt solid players but prone to errors (FBT is playing out of position) Fans unbelievable, Wrexham fans class too but loud away end matched them

It’s going to be exciting/heartbreaking in equal measure but after years of tippy tippy dross shite (and I include Garner in that other than the run in) I couldn’t be happier.

Get FBT to LWB and stick a ox of a defender in and we are in with a shout of the play offs.

My concern with the back 3 is that you kind of need FBT and UGM's skillsets to do what we're doing going forward - I don't think Brewitt or Minturn could play outside of that central position (although Tuesday night's game is a good chance to test that!). Brewitt is the one player that it feels like we could improve on (taller, more experienced CB) but he's not done anything particularly wrong himself.

When we're trying to hold a lead, I think this formation is actually quite unhelpful - it's set up to have almost every player on the pitch bar Brewitt and Kinsella if he's on contributing to attacks, which makes us great going forward, but there a lot of passengers defensively if we're under siege. Oddly going to a back four with FBT/UGM at full backs is probably more solid, putting Genesini into midfield.

On Tuesday I'd like to see us try: (assuming we have to keep a degree of first team players around)

Mahoney

Brewitt (RCB)
Minturn (CB)
Ward (LCB)

Uwakwe (LWB)
Genesini (RWB)

Kinsella
Khan
Cain

Young (RHM if fit)
Wakeling

Still hurting here.
Taking the positive that Flynn knows, of course he does. Imagine that big tall FGR Centre Half yesterday in the Centre of Defence.
League Two gets ugly, clear to see we are Technically very good but have to address the basic route one bombardment at this level, Wrexham the best in class at it.

The referee was not giving us much towards the end.
All our goals avoidable which makes it worse.

Cracking atmosphere yesterday.

Totally agree with this, and that’s been my observation watching the games. Brewitt is left holding the baby when Dokes and FBT go marauding, and no one from midfield sits in properly.

This is actually a structural/tactical issue Flynn needs to refine.

If we replace Brewitt with Mr B. Shithouse of Six Foot Seven Avenue, he could become a useful sub that comes on for McEachran or Kemp to either sit in front of the defence or drop in.

I’d still like to see Hutton wide of a front three. Such an asset but you’d honestly be better with Stephen Hawking defensively.
The way that he is ghosted past for one of their early goals yesterday was embarrassing to watch.

I see what you’re saying about the formation / shape not being particularly great when defending. It’s not unless you have super energetic, super talented wing backs who can play as ‘proper’ wing backs and defend / attacking in equal measure to the same standard. L2 wing backs just aren’t going to be good enough to do that.

However, I can’t remember the exact minutes but maybe from about 65-85 we showed attack was the best form of defence. If we have the ball in the final third Wrexham (or anyone else) can’t score & if they are desperately trying to score we are just as likely to hit them on the break - as we did.

Why we suddenly sat back on 85 minutes I don’t know. I reckon that period mentioned above was the only time we didn’t look like conceding.

I’m sure a lot of people - myself included would have thought about taking Austin or Kemp off and bringing on another defender / full back and going 541 to see the game out but think that would have just invited more pressure on us.

That shift in mentality around 85 minutes fucked us

The morning after the afternoon before.
A long but enjoyable day. Shit journey back.

For those with an interest in club stats I reckon that was our first ever 5-5 scoreline in a league match.
Skimmed all the way back to start of Southern League in 1894-95.
Hoping not to be proved wrong as it's an interesting addition to club history if correct.

Just enjoy the ride, guys. Playing this style of Flynnball will see us in the top 7. After the years of Brown, Flitcroft, Williams, Garner, Lindsey and Morris it’s a breath of fresh air.

He’s no mug, he knows what we see and how to fix it. Personally, I wouldn’t want a CB thug and a midfield thug if it dilutes the football we are playing now.

Viva Flynn!

I finally plucked up courage to watch the extended highlights back.

As picked up above, the cavalier approach of FBT and UGM cost us big time. Now you can press forward as a defender if you know your fellow defenders are covering, but you don't do it when they are out of position.

Just look at their third goal! FBT goes charging out and is caught in midfield with 3 Wrexham players walking through the middle of defence with noone near them. That's because UGM has charged out to midfield on the right to try to get to their 9 - Both UGM and Hutton are then jogging back without a care in the world. Khan plays 9 year old soccer and follows the ball out left. He leaves the middle of the park empty and goes to where where Brewitt is trying to cover the man who waltzes past FBT. (Genesini's has also left his man on the wing to help Brewitt)!

The penalty is very soft, but why is FBT pulling Tozer to the ground? He gives Tozer the opportunity to fall and the ref to give the decision.

The first goal, FBT goes rushing out to RB and gets skinned. Hutton, who was out of position has two chances to put in a tackle and doesn't

When you are leading by 2 or 3 goals, there is no need for the defenders to go rampaging forward. Sit in, keep it tight. And at that point Mr Flynn, bring on an extra defensive midfielder to break down play there. Sacrifice one of the front two - Young had run himself into the ground. Austin is only supposed to be there to score goals, which weren't needed at 5-3!

Don't compress play into a single defensive line. The midfield should protect the back CBs. The wing backs sit as RB and LB to stop the opposition getting balls in from wide. The forward line helps protect the midfield, but is primarily the outlet from defence who chase hoofs or win freekicks from holidng the ball up. The holding play allows the lines behind to move out and maintain a two line formation that can reset to prepare to defend again. Its not rocket science!

Not particularly.

Think he might be better suited to RWB but also think the way he pushes forward, draws the defender in and opens up the space for Hutton on the outside is vital to how we play.

You could say similar about FBT on the left.

Which again - leads us to Brewitt. Capable, yes. Top tier L2 CB, no.
In some instances we could do with a bigger, stronger, shithouse CB there but he would also need to be very mobile because if he’s was big, strong and slow(er) than average he’d be fucked when Dokes & FBT leave him exploded.

More so we need a capable DM who sits in front of the three CBs when they are there but drops in with the middle CB when one or both of Dokes & FBT aren’t there

Agreed, I think in this system a giant beast playing in Brewitt’s position would be massively exposed.

So get FBT to LB and aim to get one in there.

I was wondering how Dokes would do at RWB myself actually.

Maybe we would push Dokes and FBT as our wing backs and get a whole new back line in  :D.

Young & Austin were knackered, I thought Flynn would have taken both off & replaced with Minturn & Wakling, the first to bolster the defence, we were playing so deep anyway, & Wakeling would have given us the option of pace up top. At 90mins I thought this would have been the sensible thing to do

Obviously we need to find a happy medium - as I mentioned I think a DM who can drop back into CB would be better.

Perhaps, when fit one of Clayton / Brewitt as the middle CB and the one other in holding midfield role with the brief to drop into CB when Dokes & FBT push on

4 league games unbeaten, 5 games unbeaten in 90 mins including the draw at Posh.

Saying it like that doesnt sound too bad.

Swindon 2-1 Crawley
Peterborough 1-1 Swindon
Swindon 2-2 Crewe
FGR 1-2 Swindon
Wrexham 5-5 Swindon

Weirdly I thought he had quite a good game apart from the free kick at the end... and the penalty... and the offside for the fourth (that's on the lino). Bit like Mahoney conceding five and having a good game - there were just a huge number of decisions to make in that game, some of them are going to be wrong.

The last time we had a 5-5 was against Sheff Utd, and we were well in front and nearly lost that one.

The game yesterday very much reminded me of the end of that season - we were great with the ball, played some lovely stuff, but we were playing three ball players in midfield as well as a defence without any real old school defenders and we started to get bullied.

It's clearly a league lower, but we look a bit like that.  Very cavalier, great on the eye, but a few teams will work out the weaknesses.

We need an organiser in the centre of defence - the three we have are going to concede too many.

We need a bully in midfield - someone to mix it up a bit, distract or wind up the other team, but mainly someone willing to forget about attacking when the time comes and just run amok defending for their life.

We need someone different up top, physical athlete type.

I see enough to get in the play off hunt - there is more to work with than we finished last season with for sure.  If we score 3 goals a game, we should well pick up some points, but we don't threaten the top three without those extra bodies to ensure we can grab a few ugly 1-0's along the way, or even a 0-0 away from home.  I don't think those additions would detract from how we are trying to play.

thats very positive for you Robert!  :D

im not stressing too much at the moment. we are missing a lot of players and pulling out results. you can see flynns reluctance to use the bench in these games. theres nothing on it! for any criticism he gets i love having players like shade on the bench to bring on where they can run around against tired legs he does also pop up with the odd off the shin goal.

we have players to come back into the fold and we have players that we will sign (hopefully)

3 points against crawley on saturday will be seen as a very good start to the season.

as a side note. i see jack payne coming on for charlton in the 90th plus minute on saturday. can't see that he is loving the league one move right now.

Only just managed to bring myself to watch the goals back.

One of my main issues, other than Hutton and FBT's powderpuff efforts for the first, is the ridiculous defensive set up for the final goal.

The famous 'draught excluder' is risible, and we leave two danger men totally unmarked on the right hand side of our wall (left as you watch on TV), one of whom then scores. Mahoney must have be able to see almost nothing.

I remember League One Wes setting up for an indirect free kick in the box back in the day where he stood in front of everyone, and the defenders lined up on the goal line behind him. I can't help but think that that approach might be better in those last minute, edge of the box circumstances.

Felt pretty positive after the game, which is probably odd after conceding 5 and throwing away 3 goal lead. As with some of the previous games, we showed some patches where we played some great stuff. Significantly better than the previous season.

Also, let's face it. If the performance of those officials is reviewed, they'd all be 'sitting out' next week. VAR removes 3 of those goals. Never a pen. Never a free kick. The boy is offside for the 4th. But pretty much everyone I spoke to guessed we'd be playing against 12 men. I don't want to blame the ref too much though, and we didn't help ourselves with some shite defending (weirdly seeing Brewitt slander when FBT and Hutton were caught out far more). We panicked far too much with their bombardment in the second half and we should've managed the game better.

Nonetheless, a very good day out. Decent weather, very good atmosphere, 10 goals in an entertaining game of football. Fair play to Wrexham, I thought their support was very good. No chance you'd catch us being that loud at 4-1 down. Have to credit our own fans of course, who made some good noise and we got some praise from Wrexham fans I had a beer with after the game. Also, as much as their defence was woeful, Wrexham were very good at getting the ball forward and had some very tidy players. You'd think they'll figure out their backline (and goalkeeper, RIP Foster) and certainly be up there.

I'm feeling pretty positive about this season now. We need to sign Kemp and Young immediately. Wonder if Chris Kiely fancies more shares....

You'd have to assume we paid a loan fee then, and they'd have to refund some of it in case of a recall. Can't imagine Bradford would just commit to paying us money for their own player, unless Jamie Russell's negotiation is better than I give it credit for!

Are there any loans that do not have an automatic January recall?

Maybe we’ve done a Jephcott type deal - loan with a view to buy

Believe all season long loans have an option for either club to terminate the deal in January.

Is Kemp OOC in the summer? And is it true a player can only play for 2 teams per season? If so then we may have leverage in terms of purchase power in Jan? Especially if he enjoys playing for us like Doyle did.

He will have only played for us though so anyone can sign and play him or he can get loaned elsewhere.

Yeah but he's only played for us, hasn't he?

I thought being on the books of Franchise counted? Maybe not

I thought you had to actually play, but maybe not.

No I think it’s that you actually need to play. E.g KKH, was on the books at Villa but didn’t play for them that season so allowed him to go on loan to us and Franchise in one season. Same with Critchlow and Huddersfield, didn’t play for them that season so could join us and Plymouth on loan in one season.

Jerry Yates is the other example. He came on loan to us from Rotherham and then got recalled in January to have a look at him, he was named on the bench for a game and all the Swindon fans wanted him to come on so it would mean he could only either play for us or Rotherham for the rest of the season instead of someone else.
