Their left back Lewis is injured until the new year. Some good news for us as think he's pretty handy.

Wildig, Bogle and Evans can hurt teams at this level. So they'll carry a threat.

Got to be winning this one. 3-1.

Feels a bit extreme to be describing any game as a must win in October, but I'd certainly really like a win here.

It is certainly an interesting encounter ahead.

Flynn vs his old team, Newport have started quite well (4 wins which is only 1 less than we have won so far) considering they were one of the pre season favourites for relegation with many.

We will need to keep top scorer Will Evans quiet, hes on 10 goals so far in all competitions and equal with Young top scorer in L2 on 9 goals. The experienced Omar Bogle is 2nd highest scorer on 4 for them. They have only 1 win in the league in the last 7 though.

I will be watching on mobile from Oktoberfest at Butlins so wont be posting anything on matchday but will be watching.

I fancy a draw.

Att: 8,854 (625 Sheepshaggers).

I'd like to see Clayton get some minutes at LCB and FBT move out to LWB. In my mind that is the answer to our problems.

FBT started the season well, offensively at least, but he's been dire for a few games now.

I'd start Young and Austin.

Consider how many log in on match day you would expect more to join in with their score prediction. I never understand why so many log in but don’t contribute any conversion!

Clayton being back in the squad at least adds some depth and gives us a contingency for when our CBs get suspended for 5 yellows. How many is Brewitt on now? I think FBT is on 4. Could see a crowd of over 10k with it being a derby. A few of those who enjoyed the non-footballing aspects of Tuesday’s derby may be back after licking their wounds. From a morale point of view it is essential to avoid defeat and any injuries. We should be aiming for a win. Both teams have players capable of scoring so I would expect goals in this one.

I never come on here to put on a score as I am the kiss of death when predicting a Town win which also applies to placing a bet which I no longer do. The same applies to any prediction League as well because the players I select either get long term injuries, lose form and get dropped or even transferred abroad! Just a reader now.

Or Shade has done well in training…

I think we miss the “get to the byline and whip it in” with Shade. You need it in the mixer at this level.

Shade has done well but he’s still a right footer playing on the left. Much more difficult to whip in a dangerous cross for Young / Austin

Get to the byline, sure. Whip it over everyone's head and out for a throw in the other side, more likely

Crosses going in would help, but if Shade cuts inside and runs directly at the defence then that adds something a bit different and gives us at least some threat from the left.

Uwakwe is a decent crosser of the ball.

No surprise that his collapse in form/Shade’s entry has seen Austin’s involvement reduce dramatically.

Don't disagree in open play, but if Shade runs forward, wins a free kick and McEachran whips that in, you still have a crossing opportunity. Lots of ways to create chances.

Yellow for Brewitt who misjudges a jump into Bogle whilst trying to tidy up a UGM mistake. FK edge of box.

I think they're both playing differently right? I know UGM just bombed forward but I think they're playing much more conventional CB roles than they were earlier in the season.

A lot of our good stuff has come from their runs forward though. They don’t have to get far to cause some defensive panic.

Strange game, both teams are absolutely woeful and incapable of pulling off the simplest of passes. We’re in the lead thanks to one moment of quality. Our back line seem to have been sucked into a physical battle they are never going to win rather than just focusing on defending.

A big area of concern is the pitch, it seems really slow. The grass seems long, cut unevenly and has tramlines that in it and is starting cut up. Not sure if it’s the poor prep in the summer or rain we’ve had but I can see it struggling over winter. Ironically it helped for our goal as it held the ball up.

Flynn:
- What do your take? Three points!
- Second have we were more professional. First half we were sloppy
- 1/2 time talk was to be careful as we were going to let them back in. Wanted shade to take on his man
- Can't give Bogle space.
- Responded well
- Newport are a tough team who work hard. We knew they wouldnt roll over
- Stepped up everywhere in the second half.
- Really enjoying watching us. We are making good strides.
- Cain is nearly back. Clayton back and Miles made his home debut
- We are a good team. If we took our chances at Bradford we would have won. We should have scored more today.
- Cain 'might' be back next week. He's been running today, but its an odd injury
- Concentration was so much better today. Educated decision to bring on Clayton when we did
- Trialists have done well and are smashing lads, but we aren't doing anything yet. Flynn doesn't just want to bring players in (for the sake of it, from context), so will just have to keep monitoring them.
- Salford is a tough place to go. Know they have lost today, but that's off the back of 3 wins. We need to keep plodding on and not get too high or too low after individual results.
- Wish Newport nothing but success. Its a club I love.

Don’t think Brewitt has ever looked particularly bad but last season looked like a player who had been without a club & hadn’t played in a while when we signed him.

A pre-season was always going to do him a world of good…

Nice moment with Shade where the crowd were urging him to take on his man and then he eventually did do, skinned him and put in a good ball. Ran back to a good reception. I know the home atmosphere gets stick but there is support there to be utilised.

This is not hindsight but Brewitt was fine from the very beginning
I’m with you on that. A few people made their mind up about him straight away and he is gradually proving them wrong. I’ve always thought he was quite decent but appears to have improved vastly and his passion is endearing himself to the fans.

How long are they are trial for🤔
I don't know. Hawes has been asking about them for the last 3 weeks. His question today was:
'Last week you said you were going to make a decision on the trialists on Friday. Is there anything going on there?'

Flynn basically said that they have done well, but they don't improve the team at this time. He is not offering any of them a contract, but is going to monitor their progress - Whether that was in training or as they develop their careers elsewhere wasn't said. But it sounded more like the latter.

Cheers, odd situation all round and have to wonder why the players are hanging around as you would expect them to have other interests.

Realistically if we navigate this mini injury blip and get Cain and Clayton fit we are basically just short a striker… for now.

I think Austin has been pretty good this season apart from his finishing.

Completely opposite of his first spell here where even if he was playing dog shite and couldn’t even control the ball properly he’d still pop up and score twice…

few sloppy passes but sweet set up for the first and was much better second half.

not trying to stir the pot, but do we think young is reverting to the Bradford player

Think he's a confidence player myself. Not saying it's wrong to sub him on 60 but maybe not helping his confidence.

I think Young has obviously picked up more attention from opposition. Partly because of his good start &  partly because now we are 10 games into the season opponents are going to have much more data/footage to analyse before playing us - where as first few games we would have been a complete unknown.

We’ve definitely been pressed a lot more last few games. Dokes & FBT are playing more disciplined but have also been pinned back by the opposition.

All part of our style of play being more familiar to the rest of the league now.
We were never going to play gung ho all season.

It’s like Football Manager and we’ve gone from ‘all out attack’ back down to just ‘attack’

Clean sheet and 3 points, lovely. Brewitt fucking brilliant. Had him as a squad player this season but he’s clearly the most important defender. So aggressive but effective in the same way. Shade a frustrating watch at times but showed one or two glimpses of what he can do and crowd were loud in praise for him when he did. Young really shoulda squared that chance to mceachran as I’m sure it was 2 v 1. Austin could tie his shoe laces and people will say he had a good game 😂 was full of praise for him at start of season - recently been poor. Good  assist today- yes, but his control was awful, majority of passing off it and was letting balls run and struggled to chase them down. RHM poor untill the goal also- but if a striker scores/assists then I guess we shouldn’t moan 😭. Today was a must win i thought so job well done, hopefully get a good tie tomorrow.

700 for them is a piss poor turnout imo, easy trip down. Up the cunting 3 point reds.

Desperate to make it to a home game soon. Following on livescore and radio when possible has been strangely relaxing and satisfying so far this season.

2nd in the home league table (played a home game less than 1st- Crewe) and 16th in the away- also a bit distorted with games played. Most years it's the opposite way round but it's pleasing to see home fans get rewarded

Have to say I enjoyed that today. Second half could've been a thumping if better decisions were made and chances taken. RHM needs to just shoot, as does Hutton but they seem to want to find Charlie. Brewitt clear MOM but thought everyone contributed well. Nice to see Shade show us the player he can be, and a great appreciation from DRS after his run and subsequent tackle/foul.

Shade indeed had a period of inspiration where he belted it on a run, put in a good ball and then legged it back to go for a tackle. That little moment of freedom shows how he could be a much more useful and dangerous player, he clearly now needs to learn how to utilise that much more frequently as he looked like lightning. Over to Flynn to properly unleash that.

Shade can becomes twice the player he has been if he attacks the touchline and uses his left as much as he cuts inside, as he did once in the second half. If he learns to do that, he can start to frighten full backs. I’m glad to see Flynn find a position for him. I’d written him off earlier in the season, but he can be like a new signing in a new(ish) position for him.

Marginally the better of two poor sides in the first half with the goal aided and abetted by some rather suspect keeping. Second half far better by us and improved the longer it went on.

I thought that Young looked totally out of sorts, did not seem to get involved to any degree and RHM was the obvious replacement which proved right although he can be chalk and cheese in one move. I really want him to come good but consistency seems to elude him, possibly a run of starts might help.

Tom Brewitt is a class act in my opinion, one hell,of a signing.

Shade proved that he is another that with a run of starting games he will be far more beneficial to the side than the odd sub appearance.

Thought that Newport pressed very well and that contained FBT & UGM to a degree.
Created some problems for ourselves in the first half and looked like an away team at times.

Played on the counter very well in the 2nd half and unlucky not to score one or two more.
A determined defence of the clean sheet and with a quarter of the home season gone we are looking strong at the CG for a change.
Need to get a win or two on the road now.

Very happy with the first team but an Omar Bogle type striker could still be a very useful addition.
The man himself looks to be out of contract in the summer so could be worth a go and still a good age at 30?

Didn't see any which was a good thing. We must have  ended up in the Newport escort after the game as we headed back to the Tap, which was unintentional. As we cut down Broad Street a copper shouted oi, this way. We explained we were town and on our way to the tap  :)

Just watching the highlights.

Absolutely brilliant assist from Austin. He's stumbling but manages to play it with bend and backspin perfectly for Kemp as he is falling over. That's the Premier League quality he has that can make such a difference. Outstanding finishing from Kemp too.

Their keeper has then made two unbelievable saves from the Young chance (he should have squared it...) and the Austin header.

It is a very smart first time finish from RHM. He does veer between the sublime and the ridiculous but he's fast becoming a great Solskjaer-style super sub.

Some of his passing at times was very uncharacteristically off, but the hardest pass he got spot on for Kemp's assist. I suspect his experience is vital for the side and he's really playing for the team, despite probably not scoring as many as he would want to.

He has the joint most assists in the league with 5 (together with Kemp and some fella at Notts County) and more than anyone other than Wakeling and Hutton managed over the whole of last season for the Town.

8 'goal contributions' (if one includes his 3 goals) over 12 games is a more than decent return, even if we all agree he should have banged in about another 5!

Thanks for noticing my absence :D

I was indeed at Butlins for Oktoberfest and watched the game on my mobile with 3 litres of Helles lager while an oompah band played a random selection of 80s and 90s hits, it was fun.

As for the game, great goal by Kemp, pretty bad miss by Young but that was the highlights of the 1st half, which seemed pretty poor and fairly split possession wise (I didnt see any stats etc).

2nd half was a vast improvement with Town totlaly dictating the play and nobody not putting in a shift, Brewitt easily my MotM in the end, Mohoney not overly threatened all game other than a couple of Bogle shots early on.

Shame Austins shot was disallowed as that would have given him some confidence.

Newport not a bad side but never looked like getting anything from the game, their keeper made a couple of good saves too.

Good day at the office.

Someone posted earlier that the reason RHM was able to score was because he didn't have time to think. I think there is something in that. I also think that this might have been the one time out of 10 that it hit the back of the net, while the other 9 times might have ended up in the Town End or hitting the corner flag.

Newport fans not very impressed with us it seems.

Quote
We were marginally the better side in the first half. Two players made poor decisions for their goal, but it t was a finely judged shot fron their player. Second half we were toothless. That it was only 2-0 is actually an indication of how poor a team Swindon were.

we could not have complained if we had lost by a wider margin.

I think we may look back at this as an ok loss against a top 3 side, while having a huge number of players missing

I am one of these fans which thinks Swindon were bang average yesterday. If we don't give away a stupid goal then you could see that being a backs to the wall 0-0.

Interestingly a lot of Swindon fans on Reddit thought they were pretty average yesterday. The commentary I listened to was the Home commentary as my iFollow was on the blink and they were v critical of their players. They frequently made reference to the fact that if we were slightly better they might have been punished for being sloppy.

They called Phil Smith correctly!

That's what I saw too.

Someone posted earlier that the reason RHM was able to score was because he didn't have time to think. I think there is something in that. I also think that this might have been the one time out of 10 that it hit the back of the net, while the other 9 times might have ended up in the Town End or hitting the corner flag.
To be fair though,he had plenty of time to think about the one v Sutton. But that's him, enigmatic!

1st half was very poor but I thought we were pretty much totally in control all 2nd half and Newport looked a very poor side, in the 1st they showed a lot more though and I was concerned when it was only 1-0 as I still thought they could get back into it.

Exactly what we said after - he's great to run and do, just don't give him thinking time

A strikers version of Ifil.

TBH on matchdays I often contribute about 6 or 7 pages on my own! rather than just 6 or 7 posts in total.
