House and car job on the home win.

Having said that I would not be surprised if Ben Hutchinson bagged a couple to seal the win for an impressive Town outfit.

We will score more than them.

But they will win.

I'm going to bed...hoping to wake up to the news that we have not drew 1-1 or even lost.

Just in case we do.

If we keep them quiet first half, then we have a shout.

Just got back from watching my eldest play (and win) in a friendly so despite the rain, form, all common sense etc I'm feeling strangely optimistic, if a little damp. So I think we'll win or at least pull off a creditable draw on the highly logical grounds that I'm in a good mood and demand that nothing spoil it.

Title: Re: Norwich City vs. Swindon Town OMDT
Post by: BelfastRobin on Saturday, October 24, 2009, 11:43:32
I expect Cureton to come off the bench and score, useless players for us have a habit of scoring against us, smart money suggests it will be late on as well. Grant Holt will also score cos he is far too good not to, so I expect them to score at least 2 and can't see us scoring, so I'll go with 2-0 Norwich, Holt and Cureton.

Anyone found a bookies offering odds on Austin to score?

I reckon a few quid on him to get the last goal would be a decent bet.

RS just said he's on the bench nothing more, could have spin from the cometary team.

The question being discussed is whether Tope plays up front with Revell or plays in midfield, 4:4:2 or 4:5:1?

Title: Re: Norwich City vs. Swindon Town OMDT

They play a 4-3-2 usually and then let Hoolahan run about in a free role, so I suspect we will play a 4-5-1 to counter their midfield trio, though I'm amazed we haven't gone with pace up front to counter their slow centre-backs.

I hope it'll be 4-5-1....  today's pretty crucial if we want to seriously flirt with the playoffs, but can't really seeing us get anything after last week.

Fuck it, keep the faith, Gordon Greer's gunna back two in a 5-2 win for the Town, ala when we played Stockport away a few years ago - even Sabin managed to score that day...

Belfast - If they play 4-3-2 we're laughing...

Maybe because Timlin will offer the slightly dodgy LJF more defensive cover than McNamee.

Its been a while since McNamee roasted a full back over a whole game 'n all...

Goal given to Martin after been given to Lappin.

Three major problems not enough bite in midfield without Douglas, exposing slowish central defenders, not enough bite in midfield to set up frequent enough attacks without Douglas, and one goal per match scored if we are lucky with no natural goal scorer.  Other than that, we are doing well.

To be honest NMH the game hasn't captured my imagination much and I've only been half listening. From the radio it sounds like we nearly scored one, otherwise Holt has hit the crossbar and Norwich are fairly comfortable as our lack of cutting edge continues.

Worried about the lack of times I've heard the names of our midfield with the exception of McNamee, can't see how we can change things for the better, strikers don't seem to be getting a great deal of service. Let's hope Danny can sort it

We'll sign Revell

We might sign Revell, Easton will be gone and will try and sign Ferry.  Tope will be back at Bolton by then, Hutchinson will return to Celtic.  We should try to sign a striker and a couple of midfielders.

I get the impression that Wilson is losing patience with some of the players.  We musn't lose sight of the fact that we were a shambles until recently under Malpas and that we only just stayed up.  With Douglas in the team, we are at least a decent mid-table side.  With Douglas and a natural goalscorer we should be up there in the play-off positions.  We are not going to move forward depending on loan players in midfield and especially up front.

My only worry from today's show is how much everyone is building up Charlie Austin...

Given the recent performances from our strikers I don't see how we've got anything to lose by giving Austin a run out. You can't read too much in to his non-league goals, but 4 in 3 reserve games is a good sign. If we go 2 down I reckon he'll be put on straight away, otherwise with 15 minutes to go.

Sure its a gamble but its worth it for the outside chance that we've got the next Simon Cox.

We have Revell, Hutchinson and Tope on loan.  Revell doesn't score much, nor does Hutchinson, Tope spends much of his time in midfield and is month to month on loan.  Paynter and Peacock don't score freely.

So yes, permanently sign a striker by coming up with some dosh, and continue without Hutchinson, Tope, and choose one of Revell and Paynter, and hope that Austin is at least a second choice striker. Peacock is at best a second choice striker/midfielder.  Easton is not getting a fair crack, play him or transfer him.  Timlin apparently isn't first choice, either.  So a striker (even if 200,000 quid from an Afganistan club) and two first choice standard midfielders would appear to make sense.

Our players without Douglas, and the departure of Coxy are not good enough, even if they show some bottle in the second half.

Only problem with that is,austin seems like a goal poacher rather than an out and out striker if he dont get the service then it's pointless bringing him on and we haven't exactly put any decent balls into the box as of yet.

Nothing wrong with a goal poacher, a decent striker needs the knack of being in the right place at the right time - its how players such as Lineker, Owen and even Cox score so many goals. Its what we've been missing, the strikers are seldom in the right place and when they are they manage to miss when scoring would be easier.

Not sure anyone is expecting that much from Austin. There is plenty of hope that he's got what it takes, but if he hasn't no one will be surprised or pissed off. I just fail to see how he could possibly be worse than the strikers we've played so far this season.

Paynter could be carrying a knock,.  I suspect Wilson doesn't fancy Paynter and Easton.  It's only fair on them if they either play or go out on loan. Seems like Revell will be signed, then.

Fuck-off, we've got to score.  If someone hasn't scored by the seventieth minute, Charlie's going on.

Wilson:
Macca, if you're fucked halfway through the half, we'll take you off and lump it.

JPM:
Can I play on the right and get some crosses in.

Wilson:
Fuck off, what the fuck,  I wanted two sugars in this tea not one.

 :soapy tit wank: yep. standard.

he stalled 3 times moving the car 5 metres, i'm not sure a driving licence has been obtained by the 40 year old chap

Fair enough, I'd share your worry if he'd driven off.

Shows how important Douglass is as well as the lack of cutting edge. We need to ship out Easton and get somebody in a similar mould to Douglass for cover. Upfront looks like it needs a rethink. Paynter should be playing for me ahead of the rest, send revell and hutch back, get rid of peacock and get a couple of others in, i dont care who. Tope should be playing left ahead of mcnamee, who is too much of a luxury (should of taken the money from norwich).

Agree with most of it, If Timlin isn't the answer, Easton should be given a crack or shipped out.  Paynter should be first choice, or ship him out.  Get rid of Peacock up front, and let him have acrack in midfield. Tope should not be playing left ahead of Macca, he will be gone soon anyway, so he may as well fuck off.  McNamee sets up chances, we just need to balance with more strength in the middle and at left back.  JPM should be playing right, purely because he gets crosses in.

The whole side needs a rethink, it is patched up with loans and Douglas.

Ok, at least we arent losing as I still think its better to lose 1 and win 1 than draw 2.

The different is only 4 points we're approaching the time Malpas got sacked I cant remember exactly when it was.

We're better than last season (no shit!) i'm trying to claim any differently (believe it or not) but I dont think we are as good as our early season form suggests. We've got 14 goals in 14 games. Simon Cox on his own had 9 I think at this stage last season.

Going home now. We were alright but just toothless upfront. We didnt look like creating anything at all from midfield. Norwich are a good team and in the first half they put us under pressure. Baffled by Wilson taking Macca off but in fairness to him we looked better when Peacock Austin and Hutchinson came on. Tope and Timlin were shite today.

Wilson:
-Sloppy goal given away
-Difference in the last 3rd
-Not delivering and testing their back 4 from wider areas.
-Not producing balls into strikers
-Defended resolutely and well at times
-Put in a good performance except for the goal
-Not worried
-Will continue to work on things and improve
-Tried to stem supply line to Hoolahan (based upon scouting report)
-Didnt react to 2nd ball which led to goal. Luck against us at the moment
-Charlie Austin did well. Put in challenges and did what he was told
-Tranmere: Go there to win. Fine tune areas during the week to stop conceeding.
-Not all doom and gloom from today!

Title: Re: Norwich City vs. Swindon Town OMDT
Post by: Crozzer on Saturday, October 24, 2009, 16:29:30
Wilson.....

Silence then, sloppy goal, did well in parts of the game, problem in the last third, defended brilliantly at times against a very good Norwich side.  Let down in the final third.  Ferry had a great game against Hoolahan.

The goal conceded after a corner, didn't react to second ball, bad luck ball hit somebody before it fell for Martin.  Defended well, little bit more in wide areas, could not get ball to the strikers.  Get in great areas, don't get ball in to strikers.

Charle Austin didn't look out of place, first thing he did was taking on the left back and crossed the ball in, challenged the center half well.   If he can do this for 90 minutes, that will be great.

For Tranmere, next week, same approach.  There were good performances out there.

Just looked at the stats on the OS.  If they are true we had 55% possession but never had one shot on target!!  They had one shot on target and 11 corners to our 1!  As we seen all season, it is obvious where the problem lays, yet he still persists with that cunt Hutchinson who cannot give a fuck.  I'm with Crozzer on this, what have Easton and Paynter done to be treated like this?

So what's wrong with the team, assuming no injuries or suspensions:

Lucas
Kevin
Greer
Cuthbert
Callum/LJF
Douglas
Ferry
JPM

most of the team  pretty much pick themselves, with Smith and Morrison available as cover at the back.  A vast improvement on last season.

For the rest of midfield:

Macca, first choice some of the time.
Timlin, second choice
Easton, totally out of favour, lower than third choice
Alan O'Brien, has been injured hard to tell.
Tope, first choice either in midfield or attack, but will return to Bolton soon enough.

For the strikers:

Revell, first choice
Paynter, currently behind Revell at least.
Tope, first choice if not playing on the left of midfield, will be back to Bolton soon enough.
Hutchinson, seems to be in favour at least off the bench.
Peacock, seems to be in favour off the bench.
Austin, did enough today to suggest he will be a squad regular at least.

What's going on in Wilson's head?  The issue today according to Wilson was no penetration in the final third after finding good positions.  In plain English, not enough crosses into the box.  So, with Danny not blaming the strikers, that has to be a problem for the midfield most obviously, right midfield and left midfield.  Interesting that Kennedy wasn't even a sub. suggesting that Timlin would have dropped to left back if anything happened to LJF, and that LJF wasn't expected to be exposed, with Macca on the right.  So the thinking there might be that Macca and LJF/Kennedy on the left are a defensive liability in a 4:4:2 formation.

So what's going to happen next?  With Wilson not being too bothered about the performance today, I would expect the same line-up against Tranmere.  When Douglas returns, I would expect the usual central three of Douglas, JPM and Ferry to be put back in place, with Macca right and Tope left, with Revell up front.

What happens when Tope returns to Bolton?  Probably, Macca put back on the left, and O'Brien coming on the right with Revell up front.  This might explain why Paynter is out of favour as Revell seems to look more accustomed to the lone role.

If we are chasing the game, a switch from 4:5:1 to 4:4:2, with Austin coming on.

All the above might be a bunch of steaming crap, but I would like to understand where Wilson's tactical thinking is leading the team.  The key player is Macca, I don't think he really fits with what Wilson is up to.  Tope seems to.  Also, where are the goals going to come from?

Title: Re: Norwich City vs. Swindon Town OMDT

Wrong players in the wrong formation- that's what cost us today and what fucked me off. 3 in the middle was wrong from the kickoff yet never got changed. It's the first time I'll blame a defeat on Wilson and shit tactics. We were woeful. Timlin is anonymous, where the hell is Easton?

Also, where are the goals going to come from?

I'd say they were more likely to come from Billy Paynter than Charlie Austin, Lee Peacock, Alex Revell or Ben Hutchinson.

...or maybe Tope would score some if he played upfront?

Bit harsh but agree to an extent that we were too narrow with the 4-3-3. Timlin had a total shocker. Macca did whip a few into the box in the first half but other than that there was no threat from the flanks at all.

Playing with Timlin is like playing with 10 men. He's not a League One player, and only an average League Two player at that. I dread everytime he plays, or comes on to 'shore' up the midfield.

We could have gone down 3-0 yesterday. Credit where its due they showed a bit of fight second half and kept themselves in the game. Although I think it would have taken us another 120 minutes for us to get a goal.

Hutchinson is lazy. Peacock is big and slow.

Looking forward to the return of Paynter, Douglas and Macklin.

Perhaps we need to start singing walking in a Paynter wonderland if we're not looking like scoring. Show Wilson we think it's strange our best striker has been dropped and give Billy a bit of a confidence boost.

Paynter has scored 21 goals in 90 games for Swindon....granted he has a good amount of assists, but strikers arnt judged on assists are they....he hasnt been doing the buisness..i went to Walsall and Exeter and he was shocking in both matches...you cant blame Wilson for trying other options....for what it is worth my view is that we need at least two good proven strikers braught to the club....like Cuthbert and Greer was braught in to defend........and why he keeps persisting with Tope is beyond me,hes done absolute Zilch in away games...ware you would think he would flourish given abit more room.

Well, Emile Heskey seems to have built an international and top flight career on it :)

Overall, wouldn't disagree leefer that Paynter's not a long-term answer as a "main striker" but he deserves better than being left on the bench behind Hutchinson, Revell, Tope, Peacock and Austin. None of them (with the possible exception of Austin who we just don't know about yet) have shown any signs of being a "main striker" either, but Paynter's got a better scoring record. Even if Wilson doesn't fancy starting with him, he at least deserves a place coming off the bench ahead of some of those who are.

He was doing really well at the start of this term when the manager and fans were getting behind him. Take your point he is not an out and out goalscorer but neither are the players keeping him out. He is also our top goalscorer this season so far in all competitions.

Typing that I've just realised I've said exactly the same as Paul D. Oh well :)

My feeling is one of two things Paul....he isnt match fit or carrying a niggling injury...or its just a good old fashioned kick up the ass,hes got to play Tope as hes probably promised Bolton he would(wrong in my view, hes dire).and as for Revell for me hes done ok and has to decide soon whether to buy or not...dont get me wrong Paul i like Billy its that in my opinion we dont play a system to his strengths,so if we dont play to his strenghths theres no point in him playing....its easy to clamour for players coming back in when results are poor but thats just forgetting why they were dropped in the first place.

In the first nine games this season Paynter worked his socks off he also took quite a lot of heavy knocks, Wilson is resting him imo letting him recharge the batteries. He will be back soon he is the best we have.

Yes, and normally I resist such clamour but in this case, other than that he was knackered and needed a rest there wasn't any massively compelling reason why he was dropped. If those who'd come in had been banging them in then fair enough but they haven't and surely Billy's rested by now? Meh, push comes to shove there's a reason why Danny Wilson is a football managed and I'm a software engineer. So I'm loathe to be too critical and prepared to accept there must be something he sees in training or whatever that we don't. But I bet Wilson's load-balancing algorithms are shit :)

Wasn't the hammering I had braced myself for yesterday, but Norwich easily kept us at arms length. Mostly agree with what the majority have said - Peacock, Hutchinson, Revell, Tope - none of them fill me with confidence that they could actually get a goal, but I thought Austin did well when he was on. The crowd calling for his arrival before he was brought on will have put more pressure on him, but I thought he acquitted himself well.

Baffled by taking MacNamee off, especially for Hutchinson. Wes Hoolahan is a diving cunt.

Fair play to the Norwich supporters coach that agreed to take me from Swaffham yesterday as well, doubt I would've made the game (or been very late at least) without them. But never let Whits lead the way on the tube...

Alex Revell has 19 league goals 104 games.

21 in 90 doesnt look bad from where I'm sitting.

Austen looked so much more hungry when he came on, what a month for the lad, the wessex sailing league, to full professional debut at carrow road in front of 25 thousand with 1000 swindon fans singing his name. The bloke must be on cloud 9.

He will be given time as I feel there is a lot of good will flowing his way, i reckon he will be on the bench against tranmere and start against Norwich and woking, i also reckon henshall will be on the bench for the 2 cup ties.

In the past, we have refused loans from higher clubs because the manager could not guarantee the loan player starting (it came up at least once when Andy King was manager).  Clubs aren't going to loan players out to sit on the bench and play in reserve games, unless they are looking to get rid.  So let's look at the old score board:

Revell: Not from a higher club, Southend, probably no understanding to start each game, or at least make an appearance.  Southend appear to want to get rid (comments after the loan was arranged).

Tope: From Premier League club, Bolton, probably obliged to start.

Ferry: From Celtic, moot point no reason not to start barring injury.

Hutchinson: From Celtic, appears to have to make an appearance, starts or comes off the bench.

What does this mean for Paynter, Revell (assumes a likely future signing), Peacock, and Austin?

For Paynter, he combined well with Cox, obviously, arguably does not combine well with Tope, or Hutchinson, and does not combine well with Revell.  This might explain Paynter being out of favour, as well as not putting the ball in the net, or possibly not following instructions.

Revell gets the nod over Paynter, no one pretended before he arrived that Revell is prolific.

Why play Peacock?  He wins headers, but without crosses and otherwise decent service in the air, obviously he cannot be effective.

Austin would appear to have the chance to be seriously in contention especially once Tope returns to Bolton.

Let's look at the Macca factor.  Playing a narrow three in midfield and giving Macca a free role was tried and failed under Malpas/Byrne.  But, who else but Macca is getting crosses in?  4:4:2 with Macca on the left doesn't appear to be an option, hence the 4:5:1/4:3:3 approach to ultilise Macca, with Tope on the left and Macca on the right.

This might explain the keep working on it comments.  There has to be a system along with the team selection, and the manager and players for whatever reasons are not making the system work.

Even if there was a clash, if there was a realistic chance of making his first team debut, you'd hope England Yoof would release him; equally if there was no chance of him actually playing, you'd hope we'd make that clear to him so he could go play for his country without a dilemma

He's already played in the FA Cup for Poole, so could very well be cup tied for the Woking game, unless of course the rules are different bearing in mind how far down the pyramid he came from

From what I hear Charlie didn't look out of his depth either so perhaps League One is not as far removed from the Wessex Sailing League as you might think
If the kid Henshall is as good as some clubs seem to think why not get him starting? Oh no, you don't win anything with kids, tho the odd game might not go amiss

Wilson having a little pop at Macca here?

“We are not really testing their back four enough, and we aren’t getting the balls into areas where we can score.

“We are getting to great areas and then refusing to cross. We want to do a little pirouette or dance over ball, and that doesn’t help the strikers

he is a good player and can be a potent weapon, but too often he has no impact.he aint gonna win anything in the air and is not going to have any effect in defensive duties.
if we are in control and taking the game to teams then he's worth playing.the current sit bcak defensive approach means he's wasted in the side.

I went on Saturday but couldn't really be bothered to comment until now, I just didn't understand the tactics at all we were a mess all over the park.
I don't know whether anyone else has commented on it but why the hell were we playing the diamond in Midfield?........Macca attacking midfield, McGovern Narrow Right, Timlin Narrow Left and Ferry (who's weak and 5ft nothing) the holding/defensive man at the back. They aren't the right mix of players to even think of attempting to play the diamond so why do it Wilson, you can't play a diamond without a proper defensive midfielder can you!? It meant we had no width at all and left our full backs horribly exposed especially JFL as Timlin is so slow that that my gran could out run him. I really do think that Timlin is an utter waste of space, he's a liability with his recklass challenges and he won't even dare touch the ball with his right foot, he is possibly the most one footed pro I've ever seen.
Then to make things even more bizarre Wilsons first sub is to take of McNamee and bring on Hutchinson........but still persist with the bloody diamond playing Hutchinson (who is so lazy it's unbelievable) in the attacking midfield position.
When it comes to tactics at the moment DW really has lost the plot it seems and the Paynter situation is just bizarre as Peacock is now a joke of a player unfortunately.

Tope will probably go on to have an OK career, he's just playing in a team devoid of any creativity or attacking threat at the moment. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't at the tbh; if he waits for someone to create a chance for him he won't get a touch of the ball all game as noone in our team seems capable of that killer pass, and if he tries to create things for himself he'll either mess up and look an idiot or get into a promising position with no support. Because no ones creating anything for him, he seems to be doing things he wouldn't normally do and overdoing things.

I was hoping Ferry would be the player to bring this to our side. Unfortunately on what i've seen he's too slow to release the ball (much like the rest of our team). Against Hartlepool even Revell was making decent runs only to be caught offside due to the midfields lack of fluidity.

Can I also point out that for the norwich goal Lucas and Lescinel were caught out of position. Norwich took a quick corner and at the time Lucas was patting Lescinel on the head and telling him how well he had done to clear the corner.
