Title: Bamboo's Wanky Wednesday Teaser (on a Thursday)
Post by: BambooToTheFuture on Thursday, January 23, 2020, 02:16:44
Ok, so I want to change/distract a few of you with something a bit more fucking fun. Rather than continued thread derailment (I'm writing my own death note with that I know), stupid arguing about whether PO goals count or not for certain scenarios, or that our season is over. So a little shift of focus.

If you want to take part, it is open to all. If you don't, you don't and that's fine too.

So, I'm not sure if any of you know but I'm a keen photographer. I've done several paid projects, working on many personal (self funded) projects, amongst other stuff. It's tough, especially when starting with zero backing at all. I'll be honest, there are days where I feel like chucking everything in; but that aint me. Some of you might like my work, some of you will think I'm a cunt regardless and some of you will just not like it at all. Again, it's fine - anything creative is always at the mercy of the holder/viewer/reader. We're all viable critics when it comes to art - whatever the medium.

Right, essentially all I'm proposing is a way of getting some of my work out there a little more and I'm certainly not getting the Bournemouth Begging Bowl out. Each week, I'll pose a teaser and whoever answer's correctly first, will win a photographic print of their choosing (from an available selection) and maybe I'll chuck in a few other prizes as time goes on. All completely free and I'll cover p&p, even if you live in outer Mongolia or whatever.

If no one guesses correctly within the week, then it'll roll on until someone gets it. The bonus is, the prints and prizes will rollover so you could end up with the pleasure of having something like 20 of my prints rolling around your attic or to use as some useful kindling :)

PS: If any of you run a business or want to donate a prize/voucher/whatever then feel free but no pressure to do so.

Anyway, I'll try to keep each weeks teaser/riddle short (Haha, Mr. Concise here). So without further adieu, here is the very first Bamboo's Wanky Wednesday Teaser (on a Thursday):

What did Sheffield students have, when Nick Clegg became Deputy Prime Minister?

Answer: A Hallam Hope

I'm not quite sure why it would work, but based entirely on the constituency (and university) name, is the answer 'a Hallam Hope?'

Presumably because he had previously pledged to scrap tuition fees.

Good Evening!

Well that one didn't take long, I'll have to go more cryptic next time!

Really loved Audrey's syphilis answer, which in most circumstances would've been correct but bared no real correlation with Mr. Clegg (not that i'm aware of).

EB figured out how the answer worked but indeed, early bird gets that worm and NEMO accurately and potentially unknowingly answered correctly. I'll DM you with a link to your print options and other formalities tomorrow. Well done!

I've decided to also giveaway, once this concludes (or somewhen), a free canvas of one of my landscape shots to the person who guesses in the quickest time. So far Nemo holds that record of course with an impressive 5hrs 41mins 25secs. Long way to go yet but can it be beaten?

Cheers for now, and catch whoever wants to take part next time, when we play Week Two of Bamboo's Weekly Wanky Teaser.

Bamboo  :)

Afternoon!

In true and likely continuing form, Bamboo's WWT is back and on a Thursday, for Week Two. NEMO won Week One with his very quick answer of 'A Hallam Hope'. His image of choice was a 'Frog in Bucket'. Every week I'll include the image chosen. La Grenouille is now on it's way to Mr. Nemo and will feature in his office space.

He also made a really great but simple gesture; since I'm doing this for nowt he offered to donate a token amount to a charity of my choosing. If anyone else wishes follow suit then I implore you to do so. Fantastic idea. Charity of choice for Week One was C.A.LM, a really great charity which focuses on preventing suicide in predominantly males under 45. Find out more at www.thecalmzone.net

No more dragging this out (I know you're all so desperate to know what the next one is), so moving on as we play Week Two of Bamboo's WWT (on a Thursday);

From memories of steam and traffic, to a diamond era. You can't beat a Locomotive!
What am I?

Answer: The STFC Logo

However it might be the badge?

Going to have to make these much more cryptic!

Afternoon!

Bamboo's WWT is back and on a Thursday, for Week Three. Red Frog won Week Two with his even quicker answer of 'The STFC Logo'. His image of choice was 'Agapanthus Heads & Spider Threads'. Image chosen below. The print is now on it's way to Monsieur Le Frog and was selected by the lovely Madame Frog.

He also, like Nemo, made a charitable gesture; the charity of choice for Week Two was Darby Rimmer MND Foundation, a charity close in our minds that the Town have visibly supported, which focuses on raising the awareness of Motor Neurone Disease. Find out more at https://darbyrimmermnd.co.uk

Moving on now, as we play Week Three of Bamboo's WWT (on a Thursday);

What do Louis Thompson, Michael Doughty and Ronan Murray all have in common?

It genuinely will rollover IF no one gets it by 00.00 Thurs (that's 00:00 GMT not TST (TEF Standard Time). Which will mean two prints to the winner.

I'll give some clues/hints tomorrow but they might be posted elsewhere on the TEF.

So 30mins left before Bamboo's WWT becomes a rollover.

There have been plenty of guesses. Reg may have been getting somewhere but he just wasn't really on the money. No one has defined the actual link between the three yet, even if the wrong reason why.

As stated. I have been leaving discreet hints in my replies in other threads. So if you're arsed have a careful look through and see if you can spot the clues.

Ronan - Thanos's son in The Avengers
Michael - KIT's driver Knight Rider
Clyde - Philo Beddoe's (Clint Eastwood's) orangutan in Every Which Way But Loose & Every Which Way You Can

Or:
Add 'Saint' before their first names and you get:
St Louis - Patron saint of shit holes in America
St Ronan - Patron saint in Ireland
St Michael - Patron saint of underwear in M&S

Just going on the fact that you have made a couple of references in recent posts to clans and kilts, I'm guessing there is a Scottish link.....? Whisky or tartan?

Exiled Bob is getting warmer. You have the Scottish link and I may give it to you but I need the three Scottish links. I believe two have already been said albeit not making the Scottish connection.

Moray (clan Murray) Firth
Firth of Clyde

I'll give you it. Since you identified Murray clan beforehand.

The answer is, despite being of Welsh & Irish descent they all have a Scottish link. Doughty Hill in South Ayrshire (Michael Edward Doughty), the Clyde source starts in the county of South Lanarkshire next door and of course leads to the sea (Louis William Clyde Thompson) Murray also means "by the sea" but is a well known Clan in Scotland (Ronan Michael Murray). Going full circle (or triangle) if you stood on Doughty Hill and looked west you would see the Firth of Clyde.

Another fact of note. All three also have U21 caps that are synonymous with the number of middle names they have.

Congrats exiled Bob. You've won two prints! I'll DM you with details :)

Evening!

The Rollover has been won!

Some cracking answers and a few niche facts discovered!

4D was getting pretty close to deciphering but after going so close in Week One, it was Exiled Bob who lethargically came to a pieced-together conclusion. Well done!

What do Michael Doughty, Louis Thompson & Ronan Murray all have in common?

Answer: Despite being of Welsh & Irish descent, they all have have a Scottish link.

Doughty Hill
Firth of Clyde
&
Murray Clan

Cheers for now, and catch whoever wants to take part next time, when we play Week Four of Bamboo's Weekly Wanky Teaser.

Evening!

Exiled Bob won the Week Three rollover, identifying 'A Scottish Link' between three town players with no Scottish heritage. His images of choice were 'The Path Less Spoken' & 'Sacromonte Graffiti.

I have to take an important moment here. I took the first image when I was in a very defining situation. The image is simple but delivers a very clear message; "Je ne comprends rien à la vie." ~ I don't understand anything in life.

With recent events it is important for all of us to reflect and speak to someone, whenever we may reach a darker place. A place where just a few simple words might be enough to know someone cares, and help us to come out the other side. It's also important that we make ourselves available to people who may be in need too. Only then can we all help to combat the effects that mental health issues will bring all of us at some stage.

Charity of choice for Week Three is Samaritans, a well known and fantastic charity which focuses on making sure there's always someone there for anyone who needs someone. Find out more at www.samaritans.org

Bamboo's WWT is back and on a Friday, for Week Four. Exiled Bob won Week Three with his answer of 'A Scottish Link'. Images of choice were 'The Path Less Spoken' & 'Sacromonte Graffiti', as seen above and prints are in the post. Images were selected by his daughter who has just enrolled at art college. Hopefully you both get some joy from them.

He made a charitable gesture; the charity of choice for Week Three was Samaritans, more details on their services are provided in the message I posted above.

Moving on now, as we play Week Four of Bamboo's WWT (on a Friday);

What links the Rolex, Floodlights and Paul Bodin?

The Rolex clock at the County Ground is installed on a metallic structure that looks similar to the floodlight structures:

Talking of floodlights, we all obviously know Town were the first to install and use floodlights (not for a league game) but I found this from a few years back on the OS.

Quote
There is something undeniably but also inexplicably special about football under floodlights.

In the winter months, even a standard Saturday fixture at three requires them by half-time.

At Grimsby Town last weekend, the pylons were beaming light onto the turf an hour before kick-off – of course, that is in deep dark North East Lincolnshire.

Ever here, in sunny Swindon, they will be used today by half-time, if not before, and are steeped in history.

Town were the first Football League club to install floodlights – they played their first match under them on Monday 2nd April 1951. Due to happen on the 19th March, a friendly against Bristol City was postponed because of bad weather – on 2nd April, Town braved the elements to win 2-1.

At this point, however, floodlit football was still banned, following a decision in 1930 by the FA and, despite an increased appetite, even when the blanket ban was lifted in 1951, clubs still had to apply for specific dispensation to play under their new beamers.

It was Wolverhampton Wanderers who did most to advance the cause of matches under the lights playing several high-profile and popular friendlies under the lights.

Swindon were at it too, though – the first European club to play under the famous lights here at SN1 was Fenerbahce, from Turkey, in October 1953. 7,000 were at the CG that day to see the home side batter their Turkish opponents 5-1.

Austrian opponents also came to visit – SK Admira and SC Columbia visited in 1954 and 1955 – over those two years, reserve team fixtures were also played – on Monday evenings – nicknamed ‘Shilling Night’ games because of their two-bob entry fee.

Town were pipped to the privilege of playing the first league game under floodlights – by seven days! Portsmouth had that honour on the 22nd February 1956 facing up against Newcastle United in the First Division.

Town’s first outing, in competitive action, with the four pylons illuminating the corners of the County Ground was a contest between the Robins and Millwall and only came to be because of Town’s (relatively unexpected) involvement in the FA Cup Third Round. The game had originally been meant for the 7th January but was moved to the third Wednesday in the second month because of Swindon’s tie against non-league Worksop.

Maurice Owen scored the only goal of the night, winning the game for the home side and lifting the Town off the bottom of the table for the first time since mid-September.

Since then, the County Ground has held countless memorable nights lit up by the current pylons which were not actually erected until 1960.

One famous occasion where the floodlights were thrust into the, well, spotlight was when, in December 1992, Tranmere held the lead at the County Ground before the lights went out. This forced a replay in which Glenn Hoddle dazzled for Town and they prevailed 2-0 winners, edging them away from Rovers in the First Division and closer to the top two.

In 1996, the lights went out before Town’s 2-2 draw with Brentford – true perfection has to be imperfect, it turns out.

It sounds foolish but it’s true and for many fans they hold a very special place in the heart – Rich Pullen, founder of the Loathed Stranger Podcast - which celebrates Town’s past, present and future - is certainly one of those supporters:

“There’s something great about winning under the lights at the County Ground, isn’t there? It’s incredible to think the current County Ground floodlights have been in place for almost sixty years. Let that sink in for a moment. SIXTY!

“To many people they are simply floodlights and that’s fair enough but to others (including myself) they’re a really quite symbolic and act as a monument to sixty years of memories for Swindon Town fans, players and staff alike.

“Those colossal pylons have towered over the Town through all of our successes and failures - from Bertie’s Babes to several League Cup adventures to the winning of our first game in the top flight to league wins and everything in between.

“Some people reserve enthusiastic anticipation for football landmarks such as Wembley but I vividly remember, as a child, impatiently staring out of the passenger seat window of my dad’s car waiting to catch a glimpse of the County Ground and, especially at night, there was really only one noticeable view. Even today when I arrive in Swindon via train the first thing I do is make sure I seek out the lights between the gaps of nearby buildings at the first opportunity.”

As for the answer I have no idea!

Unlikely as number 3 was Bodins favourite number and other than being a sub I don't remember him playing in any number other than 3.

Something to so with firsts and year ending in 3?

We were the first club to install floodlights in 1951 or the Fenerbache first European club to play under floodlights in 1953.

The Rolex clock was for our first promotion to the second tier in 1963.

Paul Bodin scored the goal to get our promotion to the top flight in 1993

Oaksey was as close as Donkey.

As identified by several, the answer does relate to the number three but what are those three relating answers?

EB.

Tbh mate, I didn't realise the answers actually add up to 30 as well! It was a little more simple than that. Although "lexicon" was the key here.

The 30 came from the direct sum of;

Paul Bodin    = 9
Rolex Clock  = 10
Floodlights   = 11
SUM of Lex   = 30

The rest is correct and since you proved your answers (and workings) well you can claim the win? It's up to you if you wish to give it to Oaksey. As they were essentially right but got missed the number with Bodin.

The composite and prime bit was a side clue to help others find the answer. You managed to link them all and bring it all back to 3.

So what links Paul Bodin, Rolex Clock & Floodlights? The number 3.

Not really. It was "easier" than the previous question RE: Murray, Doughty & Thompson.

The extra bit (the composite and prime) was just a clue to get you closer to the answer. Since the "three" were already there, the info was staring you in the face. 30 letters (composite), 3 the prime.

It was tedious granted but had I put a clue like "It's the magic number" then it'd have been too easy and I'm too much of a cunt to be doing that 😉

No not my wanky quiz starting up again (yet) but as mentioned on another thread, I'm auctioning one of my photographic prints with all proceeds going to SARI Charity (Stand Against Racism & Inequality).

SARI main mission statement is to provide support and education in diversity and ethnic awareness.

The print is a 10x8 of my “Walls of Change” image, shot in the backstreets of Sacromonté in Granada.

You don't have to particularly like the image up for grabs because the bigger picture here is to comtinually raise awareness and drive home the message that racism is not accepted today and in our future. A lot of us on here are White British men who will never have had to experience racial hatred.

A lot of people talk. I like to talk (shock). But many don't follow their words with actions. Today I'm asking you, along with myself to make a small step towards change. Even if we all only make small steps, they can in turn become one large one.

Won't have time for trolls, won't hear any excuses "if", "but what about...", "I'm not..." in some bizarre defence of racism. There is no excuse and it should not exist.

Happy Bidding  :)

Hey BO,

The graffiti message, in Spanish simply reads in English (translated by a Spanish friend at the time and also backed up in other online translations) as;

"We will bleed our ink into walls, until they fall and meet the earth."

For me it's a perfect metaphor to say "we will keep on going until that message is understood" build another wall? We'll keep on. It's much more broader in terms of adversity but I felt it relevant to this cause and especially for SARI.

I can/will provide a small info card with the print for display/educational purposes if required.

Thanks, Bamboo  :)

Cheers Bamboo. That makes sense!

When I say its me volunteering, I have done a couple of shifts at weekends but the wife is there more or less 5 times a week. Its a charity called Streets Kitchen which helps homeless. She is helping at the Brixton branch which is helping to feed and provide information and basic items (toothbrushes and toothpaste, books, information on where to get help etc) to over 100 homeless who are housed in Hotels across SW London.

https://www.streetskitchen.org/

Charity work has always something I've been interested in but never really deeply involved, i'd like to do some more of it the closer I get to being able to semi-retire/retire.

Remind me to keep an eye on your ebay listing as I have a terrible memory!! :)

Wow, that's awesome. Huge huge credit to your wife (and yourself).  It's a big cliché but I genuinely believe in the mantra of "Charity doesn't start at home, but where it is needed." I know several people who don't agree with that sentiment (family included) but to me it is something that one shouldn't be vilified for believing in.

I used to spend a fair bit of time around Brixton, when I lived near Newbury I used to visit my friend a few times in South nodnoL. Most of his friends were of Caribbean descent and got to know a few of those blokes well too. Had some cracking evenings just down from Oval.

I'll give you a nudge or DM you the link to it in due course :)

For BO and anyone else here that might be interested in bidding on this auction. It ends at 7.35pm on Wednesday evening and all proceeds (minus eBay fees) will go to SARI (Stand Against Racism & Inequality).

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Charity-Bid-for-SARI-Stand-Against-Racism-Inequality-10x8-B-W-Print/184316400915

But also if you end up missing out, really like the print and still want to donate you can buy the print from my "shop". The image is 10x8 and printed on HQ Fuji Lustre, perfect for B&W prints.

https://bamb-o.myshopify.com/products/original-photography-by-bamb%C2%A9o-for-sari

Those who have previously won a print(s) via my Wanky Comp can probably vouch for the quality of the prints and how they come caringly packaged to ensure no damage is caused to the print. Two of which made it to France unscathed. All prints are sent tracked and shipping is covered by me.

Cheers,

Ahh sorry BO, this got pushed down much further so missed this. Yeah for certain. Currently there is only the "Walls of Change" print that was featured in the auction and a t-shirt featuring an original image and design but I hope to be adding more.

In fact if there is any other print you would like, I can show you a selection of images that might be relevant for the charity wall? I Have a portfolio of archive images that you can view, if you wish? Most are 10x8 as standard. Can go larger, 16x20 as well.

But if you just want to buy the featured auction print then that's available on already at https://bamb-o.myshopify.com/
