Whether you prefer the minute's silence or applause, I feel quite strongly that both are now over-used. Should be reserved for people whose lives have had genuine meaning, collectively, to most of the people in the crowd marking the event.
If you're doing it more than once a season, on average, it's probably too much. I would imagine, for example, that a great many of our fans who marked the passing of Dave Mackay last week had probably not even heard of him before then.

We should have marked Ron Topps passing.
Should Dick Mackey pass on I hope we do so for him as well.
Don Rogers and any others from the glory days should also get a minutes silence.
But it really should be just for those with very long service or an outstanding contribution.

Include the names of former players within the end of season applause. If they are an undisputed great, then celebrate them individually too.
Generally I have no problem with doFFing the proverbial cap to Town players/managers who have died.

If it is for me, a minute of armpit farts would suffice.

I await that day with great anticipation. (In the nicest possible way.)

I remember a minutes silence before a 0-0 against Forest after Diana died (assassinated), that was a bit needless in hindsight.
Looking back the most pointless one was for PDC's mum at Aldershot. It was nice touch at the time with the whole scarf thing and looked damm good in the pictures but a silence for the opposing managers mum! Crazy really
