Title: Re: Premiership Post by: westcountry on Sunday, August 16, 2009, 22:53:20 I hate it and dont like many of the people who play in it very strong comment there Title: Re: Premiership Post by: reeves4england on Monday, August 17, 2009, 08:42:16 I enjoy it on a "I'll watch MOTD" kind of level, but I get pissed off with anybody who asks me which Premiership team I support, and I do think it is wrong that the top clubs have been allowed to break away into their own financial dreamworld with knock-on effects on the lower divisions. I would be over the moon if Swindon one day managed the great achievement of reaching the top flight again, but I feel the league itself has gone beyond football into being nothing more than a self-glorifying money-making machine.
I'm expecting United to win it again this year, and Man City to break into the top four at best. Title: Re: Premiership Post by: The Grim Reaper on Monday, August 17, 2009, 12:51:14 Hard to judge from week 1. Chelsea made hard work of Hull, Man Utd looked uninspiring against Brum and Liverpool looked out of sorts against a bright Spurs team. Arsenal looked awesome against Everton but I get this feeling it was just one of those fluke scorelines that have happened all over the football league on opening day.
Going to need a see a few more games before a pattern emerges but for what its worth I think it will be between Chelsea and Liverpool for the top spot. Not going to buy into this Man City breaking into the top 4 as they will still lose more games than the 'big four' will IMO. Title: Re: Premiership Post by: Rich Pullen on Monday, August 17, 2009, 18:14:17 Watching Swindon Town in the Premiership (as an adult) would be amazing.
I follow the Premiership no more than I keep an eye out on the Championship and League Two. I have Sky Sports but I had no interest in watching the football on show yesterday. For what it's worth I think it's an open Championship this season... Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool could win it and in all honesty I think Manchester City are only a couple of denfensive minded players short of being serious contenders. What City have done is no different to Roman Abramovich's early days at Chelsea... They were never going to win a title until he turned up. Title: Re: Premiership Post by: Doore on Monday, August 17, 2009, 18:16:32 I have to say I don't care what happens in the premiership and am completely ambivalent to the whole thing, but I will always watch a football match over anything else, from premiership to conference to argentinian highlights. I just love watching football.
Title: Re: Premiership Post by: jonny72 on Monday, August 17, 2009, 18:21:37 Since getting Sky & Setanta / ESPN about 6 months ago I've been watching a few live Premier League games a week, and the Champions League matches involving English teams. You don't have to support any of the big teams to enjoy watching them play, there is normally at least one excellent game a week though there is a fair bit of shit as well.
Whilst I'd never call myself a fan, I love watching Arsenal play. When they play at their best no one else comes close, they might not win anything but its great to watch. I find watching the Premier League helps balance out the shit I watch at the County Ground every fortnight. Title: Re: Premiership Post by: donkey on Monday, August 17, 2009, 19:46:48 On this topic, I wish the club would give us the League One scores before the Premier League scores. We are League One, it's more important that we know those scores first.
Title: Re: Premiership Post by: SwindonTartanArmy on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 09:09:54 I hate the Premier League, mainly for what it has mutated into thanks to Sky's brainwashing of the populace. It pisses me off that people from swindon travel to london, manchester, liverpool or wherever, instead of watching their local team. IT pisses me off even more to see the shirts of our rivals (plastics) in sports shops in our town, just because they have been in the premier league recently.
Title: Re: Premiership Post by: jonny72 on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 10:39:30 IT pisses me off even more to see the shirts of our rivals (plastics) in sports shops in our town, just because they have been in the premier league recently. I've never understood why you don't see Swindon merchandise in other shops around the town. I reckon they're missing out on a lot of impulse purchases due to only selling from the club shop. Couldn't the sports shop stock the replica kits? What about a range of products in supermarkets? And so on. And so on. There used to be a section in Debenhams (maybe there still is?), and I think there was a short period where Sports Soccer stocked STFC merchandise, but it doesn't seem to be happening at the moment.Title: Re: Premiership Post by: Arriba on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 12:36:07 stfc gear is really a money spinner is it.
Title: Re: Premiership Post by: Doore on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 12:40:31 Exactly arriba - they would stock it if they thought they could sell it (apparently these shops do research, and are quite adept at making money; I've let the secret out)- I don't think anyone would but an STFC shirt on impulse, those who want one decide to get one well in advance, and noone else would get one however many times they saw it in the shops.
Title: Re: Premiership Post by: reeves4england on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 13:07:41 stfc gear is really a money spinner is it. If it's profitable for teams like Wycombe and Watford, I'd imagine it'd be worth atleast considering the ideaTitle: Re: Premiership Post by: flammableBen on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 13:13:38 Exactly arriba - they would stock it if they thought they could sell it (apparently these shops do research, and are quite adept at making money; I've let the secret out)- I don't think anyone would but an STFC shirt on impulse, those who want one decide to get one well in advance, and noone else would get one however many times they saw it in the shops. Even if what doore says wasn't true, it's probably better for the club this way round anyway. I can't see there being that many extra sales from it being available elsewhere to make up for the fact that club would make less money on shirts sold outside of the club shop. Title: Re: Premiership Post by: Simon Pieman on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 13:22:04 There's been plenty of places which have sold stfc stuff and it obviously isn't a money spinner because they don't stock it long.
I'm sure I can recall them doing a kit launch thing at Burton's once uppon a time (possibly when Roy Evans was here) but it didn't last very long. Or I might have fabricated the whole thing. Title: Re: Premiership Post by: JTomlinson on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 13:30:56 They should try to be pro-active to get into the supermarkets etc, even on a 'sale or return' basis. It helps boost the profile, and I am sure there would be impulse buys. (Especially in supermarkets, I am forever coming back with stuff I didn't need!!!)
I also think STFC should have one of the stands in the Brunel Centre in the run up to Christmas, selling shirts, tickets etc - they would get loads of impulse Christmas present purchases! Title: Re: Premiership Post by: Barnard on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 13:37:10 I seem to remember some local Burton's advert featuring Invincibile and Grazioli around that time. It would be nice if a couple of shops in town stocked our kit, but as others have said, if someone wants one they'll get one from the club shop, and there aren't likely to be many casual sales.
I couldn't care less who wins the Premiership. I quite enjoy watching some of the games because of the quality of the football, but the result is immaterial. The last time I cared was 1989 when I wanted Arsenal to win because I hated Liverpool so much. I also hate going to my local in Calne on a Sunday during the season and watching a load of local lads going mental about Liverpool/Chelsea/Manure. Title: Re: Premiership Post by: Spy on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 13:57:41 Even if what doore says wasn't true, it's probably better for the club this way round anyway. I can't see there being that many extra sales from it being available elsewhere to make up for the fact that club would make less money on shirts sold outside of the club shop. I was thinking that too. I think its that and (moreso) what Doore said. Theres a combination of the fact the people who would buy it would buy it anyway from the club shop and the club make a bigger profit margin that way. Title: Re: Premiership Post by: SuperTed on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 14:10:29 If it's profitable for teams like Wycombe and Watford, I'd imagine it'd be worth atleast considering the idea I think that's idiotic. Quite...the Co-Op in OT had an outlet up until quite recently when the wheels completely fell off in the dog days of Diamandis. Under Runt..there was an outlet in the Brunel...presumably the cost of rent was greater than the sales.
