Was just going to post this.

I am guessing the Trialists must be bothers with the same name.

As the club shared the trialist names with BBC i'm surprised they are still calling them trialists.

Assume the keeper is Baxter. Which of the trialists was a CM to play with Palmer?

They always put seem to be here for preseason, shame they never get beyond it, they have quite a legacy turning up every year, must be the whole family trying at times, wonder if their old man has retired yet

Possibly but its more likely its one of them. Guessing Ben Reeves, as Cole was the other midfield player and he is injured according to Wellens.

Has Baxter been confirmed by the club or is it just word of mouth?

Just before they went for a cup of Bovril they were waxing lyrically about Tyler Smith.

Earlier in the half they were commenting on their back line having no pace and Swindon either playing over the top or in behind for DJ and Smith to run onto.

Also, I recall them saying that Smith missed a couple of (easy) chances too.

I was thinking the same, Twine seems to be being pushed wide far more than early in his Town career, almost used as a winger now.

We were 7-0 up at HT vs Cirencester in 88 under Macari when we won 10-1.

Just checked RE: Norcia XI. We won 0 - 11 (eleven) but were only a lowly 0 - 6 up at HT.

I expect we'll just manage double figures today. Have done quite well in previous years betting on over goals for non descript pre-season friendlies. Like over 5.5 when a Wolves XI play Rugeley or something. Get around even money and most occasions this is an easy opportunity to just double whatever $$ you have spare. They often end up 6,7 or 8 to the good. Even the lesser side sometimes chip in with a consolation. Often when the "pro" side has thrown on about 8 trialists.

I remember not that long ago that Nuneaton were on the verge of the football league, certainly top half of the Conference.

Good win today, well done all.

As Duke says, you can only beat whats in front of you.

Be interesting to hear the names of the trialists that played and how well they played.

That's not a tackle though is it, it's a side on block, studs are nowhere near the player.

Title: Re: Today game with Nuneaton
Post by: BambooToTheFuture on Sunday, August 9, 2020, 15:18:14
It's an anticipated defensive block, which then appears to looked to have been turned inside out.

There was by all accounts a high challenge late on by a Town trialist, who absolutely clattered a Boro lad but likely that one won't be published. Commitment is fine but no need for rash challenges in a very minor pre-season friendly. Especially as it was 8-0 at that point.

Saturday 8th August;

Boro were undone by League Two Champions Swindon Town at Liberty Way.

The Robins started the game with an almost full strength first team, which included on loan Sheffield Utd striker Tyler Smith, and were out of the blocks quickly as they looked eager to impress boss Richie Wellens.

Slick passing through the thirds and intelligent movement up front blew Boro away in the opening quarter with the visitors racing into a 5-0 lead inside 21 minutes.

The gulf in divisions was clear to see but rather than capitulate Boro dug in deep to stem the flow of Swindon attacks.

Boro were now having more joy in the final third and Marcus Kelly showed his technical ability with a stinging shot sent goalwards which was well blocked by the visitors defence.

Next to go close for Boro was Luke Benbow who sent a free-kick narrowly wide with his effort sandwiched between two Swindon goals in the closing minutes of the first half.

Swindon started the second half with eleven fresh players that included five first team regulars whilst Boro introduced three subs of their own Armsden, Dias and a trialist.

In the sapping heat Boro re-grouped and stuck to their task well as the visitors continued to push and move the ball around slickly on the perfect playing surface.

Boro were a whisker away from pulling a goal back when an arrowed shot rebounded off the inside of the post, agonisingly avoiding the incoming blue shirts, and was cleared to safety by the Robins.

Swindon responded with a well worked goal, moving the ball from one side of the pitch to the other before whipping the ball across for a close range finish.

Boro continued to show their character with a resolute and disciplined second half showing and went close with another well taken free-kick followed by a well struck shot that cleared the bar.

Youngsters Harry Jackson and Jack Hilton were introduced late on for Boro but the game played out without any other clear cut chances at either end.

Despite the heavy score-line, Boro showed their determination and spirit in sapping conditions against a title winning full strength Swindon squad.

BORO:
Breeden, Trialist A, Trialist B, Kettle, Edjenguélé, Trialist C, Shamsi, Lita, Benbow, Edmunds, Kelly.

Subs: Armsden, Trialist D, Trialist E, Jackson, Hilton, Trialist F, Dias.

So it looks like a friendly tomorrow vs Bristol Rovers, another chance for the many trialists to get game time against "probably" better opposition than Nuneaton.

Hopefully some more player news will come out before then on who is on trial.

I think the club have missed an opportunity in making some extra funds by not showing this on iFollow, take some money off the Gas fans too when there is no income. Even if they charged £5 for the game.

Rivers reporting the game as an U-23 development game. So more of a training exercise. They have no plans to stream it, which means it’s being played at their gaff, I suppose.

The friendly Saturday v Coventry at the CG has a stream. Details on the club site.

I have heard it will be at home. As for an U23 game, I think all friendlies are pretty much that now with a team made up of trialists probably.

"The club have a full schedule of pre-season friendlies planned, but as it stands the details will be released incrementally due to COVID safety regulations. The games will be announced in due course.

I can confirm there is a Swindon game tomorrow, however that is an under-23s training game completely behind closed doors, so no streaming planned for that one."

I know its not an exact science and that friendlies don't mean much etc etc

But last night divisional rivals Shrewsbury only beat Nuneaton at home 3-1 in a friendly.

Makes our 8-0 against Boro look pretty good.

Almost their normal 1st team with no trialists 1st half, we had more trialists playing.

Aren't we supposed to have a couple of games against non-league up here this week?

All very hush hush isn’t it. Makes me think it was us that wanted the media blackout, cos I can’t think of any reason for Man Utd kids to be so secretive.

No doubt all will be revealed.

I have a feeling that one will be against Stockport at Carrington.

Many NW based non league sides Altrincham, Macclesfield, Stockport,Wrexham, Fylde, Chorley, Chester, Curzon Ashton, Southport.

If you include West Yorks then add Bradford PA, Halifax, Farsley Celtic, Guiseley etc.

A little communication from the club would be nice, and yes the media ban can only be concerning our side in hiding trialists I would think.

Well Wellens said they were both non league so doubt its them.

Thursdays is all the non first team players mostly so not sure what we will hear/learn about that one.

Has there been any more details about friendlies after they are back from the NW?

Although probably not quite Fylde, Andy King was the man for Southport during pre season.  Think it was all we could afford.

SSP alluded to it in this interview.....

"Me and Matty (Heywood) missed the curfew on my very 1st night out in Southport...we were crawling along the grass at Southport Pontins in the pitch black because Kingy was sat on a balcony waiting for everyone. Neil Ruddock had organised the day out in Formby as it was where he had lived during his Liverpool years"
