It's been on open display since they found him - he's got it pointed at his neck. Holding himself hostage, basically. Not a strategy for long-term success, I'd suggest

Fucking hell, I thought this was a joke but they have just mentioned it on Sky and played a clip of a radio interview where he sounds proper pissed.

I bet Gazzas never met Moat. Its like the time he (Gazza) bragged that he plays darts with the Queen.

The "rolling coverage" on Radio 5 is hilariously bad. It's crap enough on telly with nothing to report but at least they've got funny pictures to show. On Radio it's all "Please describe to us Peter exactly how many police officers you can see. Can you count them for us Peter? Are they all armed?" and the palpable disappointment when the psychologists say "It's likely to be over by dawn" because they either want it to go into another day or to be able to jerk themselves off live when he blows his stupid fucking head off while they're still on air.

The Sky news I watched earlier was pretty dire too, trying to irk out some anecdotes from a geordie pensioner who wasn't sure about much at all. It all goes to pot when the presenters are off-script, I don't think they are used to news happening in real time. They are filling the air with some interesting hypotheses though.

moat was obviously mentally ill, and underneath was probably a decent man.he must have been reading the press reports which in the tabliods was so ott it was almost funny.pictures of him aged two months with captions saying."cute, but already with his fist clenched" "menacing look in his eyes" etc.etc.

Title: Re: Anyone not watching SKY/BBC News?
Post by: Batch on Monday, July 12, 2010, 11:38:19
moat was obviously mentally ill, and underneath was probably a decent man.

But you could say that about a lot of criminals. Suicide bombers have been brainwashed. Nonces are clearly mentally ill to do what they do. etc, etc. If someone is killer and a danger to others then they have to get taken out!

Tabloids and other outlets are usually OTT about this kind of thing. It's only a matter of time before they blame everything on pornogrophy, heavy metal music and an addiction to violent computer games.

Title: Re: Anyone not watching SKY/BBC News?
Post by: Arriba on Monday, July 12, 2010, 12:04:25
fair point Batch.they didn't take him out though did they? he gave them the run around in a tiny area for days.and then was able to kill himself.
i think moats brother was spot on in what he said.

Title: Re: Anyone not watching SKY/BBC News?
Post by: Batch on Monday, July 12, 2010, 12:12:37
The way I see it is there were trained psychologists and negotiators their that tried their best not to tip him over the edge, because as you say he wasn't right in the head. With hindsight they perhaps should have let the brother speak to him, but thats only obvious now.

I'd probably think the same as the brother if it were me in that postion. But from a million mile high view I don't see what the police did wrong. Unless it turns out the taser caused him to pull the trigger involunariliy.

Title: Re: Anyone not watching SKY/BBC News?
Post by: jonny72 on Monday, July 12, 2010, 12:24:19
I just don't get how anyone can place any responsibility for his death on the police. He was the one running round waving a gun at people, if he'd put it down he would have walked away from it. Even if the taser did cause him to shoot, if he wasn't holding a gun it wouldn't have happened. It was his fault and his fault alone. No one else got hurt so it was job done by the police.

Oh dear.
That figure is only telling if compared with a number who dislike it. Which it can't be. Also, we don't know who has 'liked' it. 10,000 thirteen year old boys who think clicking on a link about a murderer is funny do not signal an absence of morals in our country, whereas a majority of the 10,000 being educated and in the electorate should worry us!

Let me not be classed as a paedo on here or anywhere else, but, whatever judgement we all may make on Moat, don't you think Cameron was just as moronic to make the statement he did in Parliament before the IPCC and others have made their full reports?  The damage Moat did is appalling, but it sounds as though there were a lot of other things that went wrong which contributed to the story, and to have the Prime Minister making such crude political capital out of it, at the same time as suggesting all sorts of other 'civil rights' changes.

Cameron was critical of the idiot facebook groups that seem to make moat out as some kind of hero, not the events leading up to the murders. I think he got it right myself.

Do people who commit other crimes deserve as much sympathy? I mean suicide bombers have been brainwashed, so should we be more understanding. Kiddy fiddless clearly aren't right in the head and maybe have been abused themself, so should we view them equally as the victims? Etc, etc.

Its a fine line.

cameron condemned "'any wave, however small, of public sympathy for this man". it was one of his MPs who mentioned the facebook page.

ignoring the argument regarding whether moat deserves any sympathy or not, i don't like the fact the prime minister trying to tell us all how to feel - especially when there is still an inquiry under way.

He was certainly critical of FB, and I have no problem with the criticism - except this is the Prime Minister in Parliament - but he also made some pretty forthright comments about Moat as well, which may or may not be accurate, but again as PM, in parliament, it was crass.  And my answer to the general question is to be very wary indeed of making judgemental statements about these sorts of situations, where we simply do not know all the facts.  What makes anyone blow a gasket?  What happens when we do is different for every person.  He had apparently indicated that he was going to tackle the other boyfriend, and no-one had bothered to pass that information on....there is a degree of responsibility there isn't there?  It does not help the real survivors of an awful situation like this to recover if they are constantly reading the ill-considered judgements of others - on Facebook, in Parliament or on TEF.

I didn't think it was Cameron's place to comment, but I have been surprised & disappointed by the sympathy shown to Moat.  As one letter writer pointed out in this morning's paper, would he be attracting the same level of sympathy if his name was Raoul Ahmed?  Doubtful.

Also the 50 hours of tape where he asks for help(6 months ago) suggests more could of been done.

And good job too, had it not been for footie ID cards I would not have anything to remind me of who I was after consuming 20 pints and being knocked unconscious by an opposition supporter
Which game was that against?

Tabloids and other outlets are usually OTT about this kind of thing. It's only a matter of time before they blame everything on pornogrophy, heavy metal music and an addiction to violent computer games.
Not quite, but yet another example of why you can't trust a damn word printed in the red-tops, they genuinely do just make stuff up:

One of my favourites from the Mail regarding computer games (must have been about 2002) was outrage at a 2 year old playing the marvelous N64 game Goldeneye and apparently screaming 'die die' as he was shooting. The problem, from the photo, was that his hands were too small to hold the controller properly and to progress through the game he would have to need to know terms like "DAT tapes" and "install covert modem". If the story was true, in essence, the little boy was a genius.

Pfft! My kids were installing covert modems from about 18 months. Although they were fucking useless at remembering to do backups with the DAT tapes until they were about 3, granted
