Title: My home cinema just got very quiet
Post by: AldbourneRed on Thursday, May 23, 2013, 10:25:43
My trusty Denon A/V receiver has suddenly stopped outputting any sound and needs fixing. I've tried everything I can think of (pressing random buttons, banging on the top, all the usual fixes), but it seems like one of the internal components might be fried.

Is anyone on here an A/V expert, or can you recommend a decent place for repairs not a million miles away from Swindon?

Blow into the headphone socket to see if it fixes it.

Thanks Si, but it's hooked up to my 5.1 speakers and none of them are outputting any sound, even the test tone, which is why I think it might be something a bit more serious

try changing the batteries in your hearing aid.

It’s a common problem with Denon receivers. Dust builds up in the headphone socket and the unit doesn’t output sound (I guess it thinks there are headphones in the socket). Honestly, try it!

Wow, in that case that's a great tip, I'll try it tonight when I get home.

Cheers!

Did it work?

Unfortunately not, tried blowing as you suggested, having a careful look in the socket to see if there's any noticeable dust, but still no sound. Even got the hoover on it just in case. Thanks for the suggestion though, was definitely worth a shot.

The display on the front of the receiver shows no sound channels coming in for any of the inputs. Not even the speaker test tones in the setup menu outputs anything to the speakers. However, when I set the HDMI inputs to output the audio to my TV via HDMI (rather than to the speakers) then the audio is sent to the TV correctly.

This suggests (to me as a layman) that the inputs are fine and there's something wrong with how the audio signals are being processed by the receiver.

You don't happen to have any other great tips, or know of anywhere I could take it to have a look do you?

Only thing I can think of before taking it for repair is to do a factory reset.

Sacrifice a chicken over it whilst reciting verses from the Necronomicon?

Make sure you get your pronunciation right, the old ones don't take kindly if you don't.

I don't think Abdul Alhazred was a big fan of Denon, would be worth a shot if it was made by HP  :D

I had a similar issue with my Onkyo.... Turned out to be the HDMI board... Replacement wasn't cheap...
