Title: Cheese
Post by: Doore on Thursday, March 5, 2009, 23:38:50
This is a topic that means a lot to me.  I am a cheese lover.  Please note, a lover not an expert.

My current favourite is a delicate Blue Brie.  I also have a soft spot for White Stilton, and Leerdammer accompanied by a spiced apple chutney.

My recent cheese on toast triumph involved smoked cheddar, parmesan (without which no fridge is complete - often my fridge contains nothing more than cheese, white wine and lager...) and mozzarella, with a sprinking of black pepper.  Lovely.

No lists, no contests, just a thread for fellow cheese lovers to share their thoughts.

Don't think he did, but Danny strike me as a Red Leicester or possibly Double Gloucester kind of bloke.

To get back to the subject in hand. Cheese is indeed ace. I consider it an essential food group.

A bit of brie, left out to warm up all day, is irresistibly delicious. As is just nibbling a lump of strong stilton.

When I was working at my dad's place I used to uncontrollably nibble on all the manchego (hard sheeps cheese) and the lovely creamy tetilla (hehe. small breast.)

There was a really nice pungent blue cheese I used to devour at every oppertunity too, but I can't remember what it was called.

La Peral was the blue cheese. Smelly but lush.

mahon and idiazabal were pretty tasty too.

What radio 1 show? Spacey's been asking STFC related people their cheesey preference for ages. I've got a vague yet bizarre memory of asking a confused Bill Power on Phil Emmel's(?) phone at a trust meeting.

I think its the news reader guy from the Chris Moyles show. He interviewed lots of celebs and always asked what thier fav cheese was.

Seriously tho, chilli flaked cheese cant be beat!!!

I dunno. I'm always a bit weary of cheese with lumps of stuff in. I mean if I want some chilli with my cheese then I can cut up my own. Same goes for cranberries and chives.

Not that I'm claiming it isn't as ace as you say, and I guess the chilliness infuses a bit with the rest of the cheese. I'll give it a try if the opportunity arises.

Cut up your own chilli and then add it with your cheese???? Are you mad????

Why get a dog and bark yourself springs to mind. Surely, we as consumers today dont want to do our own cutting and chopping, we buy everything ready made. A bit like beans and sausage in a tin. A classic idea as they are just as tasty cold, no need to waste energy heating them up. Stoners paradise :)

I may be a little bit mad. I've had some classic experiences with the chilli cutting, as I'm sure most of us have. There's a classic thread about it somewhere.

The continual strive for perfection in the artful realm of cheese making really is one of the things which make humanity great. It's something we do above our basic survival needs. To me it's on a par with space travel.

Noo. people have stopped posting stuff.

Let's restart this thread with a discussion of cheese in legend, literature and on screen.

It's interesting to note that Paddington Bear ate marmalade sandwiches and not cheese. I propose that this is why he's been 100% outclassed by the more recent works of Wallace and Grommit.

You certainly did. I think it was Stilton.

Which leads to my point. Stilton and Brie are my favourites - depending on the mood and occasion.  That's proper Stilton and proper Brie, none of the white Stilton or blue brie rubbish.

Ed is one of my close showbiz pals. We quite often like to get together for a chat over a glass of Lambrini. Ed told me that he didn't actually ask Danny what his favourite cheese was, but asked him if he minded being asked what his favourite cheese was. The question was put to him before the show and Danny said he had no problem with it. Ed's exact words were "He was well up for it!" Obviously the thought of Danny Wilson going " Bring it on! I'll answer owt." made me laugh. Unfortunately due to time constraints the question was not asked on air.

Very few questions were asked on air due to weather, traffic reports etc, but you would have thought the most important question would have been.
I reckon it would have been dairylea.

Tescos used to do them and they were superb but stopped doing them a year or so back. I do like a bit of Roquefort or a good strong cheddar - one of the only things the Jocks do well.

That chili cheese from sainsbury's is wank, mexicana. Just tastes of plastic with a few chili flakes in it.

Brie thats well matured and sloppy is great.

A stinky camembert is awesome.

I'll take stilton anyway I can get it, but the bluer the better.

A fair point, it's a different experience though, more of a 'sandwich' one than a 'pure cheese' one.

It's bread, with cheese, it's a sandwich.

Title: Re: Cheese
Post by: sonicyouth on Friday, March 6, 2009, 17:39:45
not if it's one slice of bread with cheese (and perhaps other additional condiments such as chutneys and pickles) on top. if it were a sandwich, there would be another slice of bread on top

Title: Re: Cheese

An 'open-faced' sandwich then. Which, of course, is oxymoronic.

Title: Re: Cheese
Post by: axs on Friday, March 6, 2009, 17:41:50
1.
a. Two or more slices of bread with a filling such as meat or cheese placed between them.
b. A partly split long or round roll containing a filling.
c. One slice of bread covered with a filling.
2. Something resembling a sandwich.
tr.v. sand·wiched, sand·wich·ing, sand·wich·es
1. To make into or as if into a sandwich.
2. To insert (one thing) tightly between two other things of differing character or quality.
3. To make room or time for: sandwiched a vacation between business trips.

I wouldn't call it a sandwich either. I'd call it bread and cheese.

If I'm having some crusty bread with brie then it tend to be about the same mass of cheese as bread in the combination,
