I'm not too sure about this. In a way its good because it'll add a bit of bite back into the midfield, but it means that Whalley or Pook will need to be dropped and I don't think Gurney is any better than them...

I wonders who's wife hes got his eye on!!

I dont know whether to laugh or cry. However, I've only seen him play once or twice, so I will reserve judgement for a while. An extra body in our small squad, so it cant be that bad.

Not the ideal signing but unfortunately we can't afford the ideal signing, Swansea are paying a lot of his wages so worth doing.

I wasn't too bothered when he left but he's ok, I remember when Wigan were interested for £150k a lot of people didn't think we should sell. We do need a leader.

In other news Derby have apparently said we could take Holmes on loan if we pay all his wages but we can't afford that. Would be a good idea for the red army fund to do an appeal. I'd give some money.

I'm very surprised at this one, but exactly the sort of player we need.  I was always a big fan and very disappointed when he left.  I imagine he's been signed with a view to playing him as a midfielder rather than a right-back, where he is supposedly more at home.

I will never forget the excellent strike at home to Wrexham a couple of seasons back.

We're going places!   8)

Radio Swindon copy:

Swindon Town are expecting to complete the loan signing of former defender Andy Gurney until the end of December.

The 31 year old played 145 times for the club before joining Swansea almost a year ago.

Since then he's fallen out of favour at the Welsh side, who'll pay part of his wages while he's at the County Ground.

Manager Andy King has brought him in as defensive cover after losing assistant manager Alan Reeves with a broken leg.

Gurney certainly didn't expect a return to Swindon so soon after leaving.

I'll add my twopenneth ...

Gurney .. someone said 'free kick specialist'. No he's not. He scored one wonderful goal at Elland Road, and then spent the rest of the season thinking he was David Beckham and took -- and WASTED -- the majority of the freekicks.

He's got a big gob - too big - and ALWAYS gets booked.  It's almost as if, some games, he'll get to 89 minutes and realise he's not got a yellow and go and kick someone to relieve himself.

I'm not happy about this. I'd much rather have had buzzer than this dick ... or someone who's a central defender who will provide more competition and cover.

This is wrong, wrong, wrong.

(he'll probably score on Saturday now)

The point here is that we are getting a player that can do a job, and as with ManUre and their two another club is paying a chunk of their wage.....we could have had Holmes but can't afford him as Derby wont pay.

Gurney is not a midfielder, but he is a battler....and in my opinion we're likely to be in  a relegation battle this season.

If hes been signed as a midfielder then this is just sick.

Rated him as a right back, but he lost the plot in the last 6 months he was here and seemed to have no focus for the game at all.

How much better did we look with Summerbee rather than Heath? That manc cunt is on one big training session with us.

Not good.

Have only really become a regular in the last few years. As my grandad is the only person in my family that has any interest in football (supports Notts County), and all my friends support premiership teams I would have only got to a couple of games a season during Gurney's time here. 'One or two' may have been a slight underestimate, but cant be far out.

Dear oh dear.  If he has been signed as a midfielder, we might as well kiss goodbye to any sort of football we were starting to try and play.  3 seasons of misplaced 60 yard balls was enogh for me, not to mention the bookings and long range 'attempts'.

The only way i will even slightly be happier with this signing is if he plays right back and Collins takes Ifil's place.  Which won't happen.

What the hell is going on?

I think hes a good all rounder ... and experienced and I think he will do well for us .. we are a bit rudderless at present and he will put a tackle in .. as to where to play him ?? Right back or centre back .. maybe he will free up Jenkins or O Hanlon to play midfield or play there himself ..  I think he will do well ... welcome back Gurns .. i never liked Hewlett anyway

Gurney could turn out to be a saviour in the centre of the park or the biggest waste of money since 750k was spent on Mark Robinson

Robinson cost £600k + several grand a week in wages and Gurney will cost maybe £6k in wages, with no transfer fee, so even if he didn't play a single game, it's hardly comparable.

They weren't meant to be a strict comparison, and circumstances have changed.

It's like saying that Ricky Shakes is the greatest thing since sliced bread. He isn't made of wheat but there is still a comparison...

We didn't have any money then either. We signed Drysdale after Robinson and he was even more of a waste of money and since then Gary Alexander when we could of had Zamora. Not wasted much since then.

At times Gurney looked a good player, at other times absolute bolloks. Which will he be? who knows.

Lay off Gurney, he gets into the box.

Question for Reg Smeaton, if David Peach was rated 3.5/10 at full back, what would Gurney's rating be.

We are going to have the Gurney in midfield discussion, he won't be playing full back, he's going to be in midfield as the much awaited ball winner.  If he provides steel that means more freedom for Shakes and Nicolau.  Possibly, though, he might be playing along side Shauno, especially with Reeves out temporarily, and with King pissed at Ifil.  What would Ifil be like in midfield?

I can't be bothered to read through all the previous posts on this so apologies if I'm repeating what anyone else has already written....
I've been watching town since the Ardilles days and was a season ticket holder up until the end of the ill fated McMahon era.

Due to various circumstances (kids) I have only been to a handful of games each season since but one player sticks out as being one of, if not 'THE' worst player that I have ever had the misfortune to pay good money to watch and obviously no prizes for guessing who.

When Swansea took him off our hands I thought it was a great piece of business by King and I thought he would be replaced by someone who at least could kick a ball - now he's back - tell me it's a bad dream please !!!!

I was there for the Wycombe game and I really believed things couldn't get any worse but even that debacle has been overshadowed by this news.

At least when I heard that Summerbee was back it filled me with some hope that maybe things were moving in the right direction and I was even contemplating getting a season ticket again along with a number of my mates who hadn't watched town regularly in years either.

Well after that false dawn coupled with the Wycombe game and the Gurney news it might be a long time before I and a number of others step foot in the County Ground again.

TBH I think that he wasn't very good in the last few months because the whole team hated him for what he did to Hewlett's Mrs. It is ok for him to return now cos off the top of my head the only players left from that team are Rhys, Jerel? Migz.

Obviously it is hard fr me to make a reasonable judgement, but I think Gurney will only be useful if he is played in the right position and has aggression without being hot-headed.

As long as he can sort those things out he might be valuable.

Gurney's always been a player who divides opinion hugely but I think to call him our worst player in 5 years or whatever is ridiculous. He was ok in my opinion and at times very good and you have to say averaging 8 goals a year is damn good considering he spent a lot of time in defence.

exactly, hewlett was a fucking piece of shit!!

atleast gurns tried, his passion might have been a bit misguided (funny on TWO levels!!---mrs hewlett and his poor disciplinary record)

I CANNOT  BELIEVE THIS !!   gurney was the WORST player at this club along with hewlett!!!  i really dont like this fucking guy, sorry to gurney fans but from what i've seen....
a) he wont give us 'bite' in midfield, he will give us plain thuggery and bookings!
b)he cant even play in fucking midfield!!!!

Who's he going to take the place of then because he is not better than anyone that is already here.  my god, sorry for that outburst,       i did not know i was capable of that. you never know, he might be good this time around

Bollocks! He wasn't very good for the last few months when he was here but before that he was good. I think he is the sort of player we need to add a bite to the team. He maybe a bit of a loud mouth but he sure has some good leadership skills on the pitch.

TBH I think that he wasn't very good in the last few months because the whole team hated him for what he did to Hewlett's Mrs. It is ok for him to return now cos off the top of my head the only players left from that team are Rhys, Jerel? Migz.

fair enough mate, your entitled to your opinion, i just have a different one. If he does pull on the red again though, there's not much anyone can do about it. I wont 'boo' him, i just rather we signed someone else.

he may have a gob on him but referee's are clamping down on this kind of things so i dont think discipline will be a problem

On reflection, my apoplectic rage has dissipated a little and I'm looking at his signing with an open mind. Provided he doesn't get put straight into central midfield, I can't see it being that much of a disastrous signing, there was quite a long period where he was a decent player who offered us a lot going forward whilst being solid in defence, he was also a pretty good captain when he wasn't shagging other people's wives and mouthing off at referee's.

I don't think it's quite what we need right now but if we're not paying much of his wages then we've not got anything to lose.

Although considering he has a footballer's brain it could be a huge problem...

I've not really forgiven him for Cheltenham away-proper disgrace. It just seems a dull move which makes me apathetic

Agreed. Most Swansea fans seem to think he did pretty well for them until he was dropped for shagging Kenny Jackett's wife.

Gurney signed for Swindon
GWR radio reported tonight that Andy Gurney has rejoined Swindon Town today, and even trained with his old teamates this morning.

Shame really, as I thought he was a good player, and Swans were a more competitive, organised side with him playing last year.

I wish him well anyway - I don`t think he ever really settled down here, but he`s a good player!

Quote

Swansea defender Andy Gurney has left the club and re-joined Swindon Town on loan until Christmas, virtually a year after leaving them for South Wales. The hard-tackling full-back was transfer listed by Kenny Jackett after falling out-of-favour with the Swans boss and despite his best attempts to fight his way back into the side, the 31-year old has been off-loaded to the Robins until the new year.

The terms of Gurney's loan deal state that Swansea have agreed to pay half of his wages over the four month period, showing just how much Kenny Jackett wanted him out of the squad.

Gurney will look back on his career in South Wales so far with mixed feelings. The defender became a huge hit with local supporters in the first few months after signing and gave many passionate performances as he helped solidify the Swans' defence. However, Gurney's form soon dropped and the full-back unfairly became the North Bank's scape-goat when things weren't going well. It would appear that despite the defender only initially leaving on loan, Andy Gurney has most probably played his last game for Swansea City.

Many supporters will be disappointed to see Gurney depart as he is clearly capable of doing a job in League One. However, paying half the salary of a player that could help strengthen the current side, appears very questionable and may well be viewed as quite a costly error by the Swans management

So opinions are mixed, a lot of their fans liked him but he's always divided opinions.

I have to admit that most of those predictions in 4-4-2 were bollocks!

I quite like Gerney, except when he plays in midfield.

There I said it.
