Title: Raspberry Pi
Post by: Nomoreheroes on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, 09:28:25
I have managed to acquire two of these little babies. As many of you may have guessed, I'm a techno-wannabe, but a techno-no-nowt!

What's the best thing to use them for?

Wanted to get the kids to play with one of them (Youngest is into Minecraft) in order to set them on along the path of computer-geekery. Thought I could use the other for something else.

Why the fuck did you buy them if you don't know what to do with them?!

I got one ages ago, with grand ideas to turn it into a Media centre in my Camper van, it's still in the box  :)

I didn't say that I bought them. I said that I 'acquired' them.

I was given them to play with in order to become more geeky. Just need a little hand in seeing what can be done that might be cool.

That'll teach the delivery driver to leave the van unlocked :)

Here's a starter for 10:

There's also raspbmc if you want to have a look at a media server.

Don't really see the point of the Pi myself. Everyones got a PC nowadays so can program if they want and there are far better options for most of it's uses. Maybe one area is playing around with electronics, something like;

Though again, not sure of the point as the Microsoft Gadgeteer platform is pretty well developed and supported.

Its good for kids to see use a constrained (by memory, cpu and power) device to learn on.

But the point is that it is £30, the idea being its significantly less money for a school to find and not prohibitively expensive to have at home either. Whether it'll catch on in this way is debatable.

For home use as a media player, I'd pay £30 but not buy a dedicated (and yes better) set up because I might not use it.
