Title: Leyton Orient FC v Swindon Town FC Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, 00:00:04
The opponent:  Leyton Orient

Seems like forever since I have had to do one of these for an away match, probably not all that long but long enough for the withdrawal symptoms to kick in, I must be taking this far too seriously. As everyone is so scared of playing us it will be nice to get a game on. My biggest hope is we carry the recent form forwards and return from the East End of London with 3 points in the bag. Best of luck to those making the journey, sadly I have to skip this one.  As ever, it seems to be have been fairly eventful at SN1 since the last time we were here. The word administration seemed to appear out of nowhere (Chris Wise?), we have had offers/enquiries in for players, and nobody in, but alarmingly, the gaffer seems to remain positive, upbeat and generally relaxed about the future. My guess is he knows more than what he is letting on, either that or he is starting to get a grips with keeping things in-house, leaving the STFC laundry behind closed doors, where it belongs. 6 weeks ago Di Canio was saying that we looked like a team that he could not be sure that would not be in the relegation mix up come the end of the season!  I think one poster has mentioned we are mathematically safe now, so that’s one problem sorted for Paolo.

So, 2 hours and 20 minutes and 90 miles away (as the AA route planner flies), the unstoppable circus rolls on to Leyton Orient. Today aside, I will always hold a special place in my heart for The O’s, for it was they who condemned Poxford to NON LEAGUE FOOTBALL a few years back. I remember the chant of “Orient, Orient” ringing round the Town End, the foreign players must have been somewhat confused, but it was a good day and with a bit of luck, a day we can look forward to in the near future, and the Pox can return to their rightful home alongside Histon, Forest Green and Tamworth.  Today’s destination, Brisbane Road, is officially known as the Matchroom Stadium after club chairman Barry Hearn's sports promotion company. Hearn became chairman in 1995 after the club was put on sale for £5 by then-chairman Tony Wood whose coffee growing business in Rwanda had gone somewhat tits-up  in the country's civil war. What a bargain, I don’t think you can even buy 20 fags for that nowadays. I found out some quite random information doing my research for this one, so rather than the normal formed then approach I found out the following utterly irrelevant information. The most internationally capped player for The O’s was a fella by the name of Tunji Banjo (Nigeria 7 Caps), with a name like that I am surprised he never tried out for  our neighbours up the A420.  Back in 1912, Orient competed in the Dubonnet Cup which was held in Paris, now you would expect the opposition to be PSG, maybe even Marseille, but no, it was Millwall. I would have thought The Bayonet Cup would have been better suited.  Leyton Orient’s most famous fan would have to be Andrew Lloyd Webber. I have always thought he had something of the night about him to be honest, despite his ability to be able to pen a tune or two. The only other person of any note to support them is comedian Bob Mills. There are a fair few famous names that come from the Leytonstone area, including David Beckham, Damon Albarn, Graham Gooch, Jonathan Woss, and legendary cook, Fanny Cradock. At the start of this thread I had no idea the word fanny would appear.

What are they saying about us? – (Care of Twitter due to lack of Swindon discussion on their forums)

Kane Midwinter ‏@KaneMidwinter
Might have to go Swindon game tomo just to get a glimpse of Di Canio! #lofc

Sam Newman ‏@SamNewman_
#lofc's next 3 league games can really shape our season, Swindon tomorrow, Stevenage saturday& Tranmere next week, need to pick a few wins!

Leyton Orient Last 6 – WLDLDW (Currently 15th on 39 points)

The Threat – Irish striker David Mooney currently leads the way with 11 goals so far this term.

A Warm Welcome Too –  Scott Cuthbert. It seems the big eared one is injured and possibly out for a while. Shame.

The irrelevant stats – The O’s have not managed to keep a clean sheet in the last 7 games, hopefully something we can expose. Interestingly, they have not had a 0-0 scoreline for 56 games. So far this season they have won 7, drawn 1 and lost 6 of their home games.

Head to Head – Leyton Orient 27 wins, Swindon Town 26 Wins, and 23 draws. Hopefully we can even that up tonight.

The Odds –  Orient 3/1   Draw 5/2   Swindon 10/11 (Betfred)   With James Collins being in the news over the last couple of days surely now is a good time to wedge on him for the 1st goal, if he starts. Best price for this is 5/1 with Bet365. I will have my random outside bet on Aden Flint this week, best priced at 25/1 with Skybet.  Couldn’t find any prices for that lazy French bastard (allegedly) Tehoue anywhere.

The Son Says – He has kept it simple, a 2-0 victory for the Town. Good lad

The Prediction -  The good form looks set to continue for me. 3-1 victory to the town, with goals from Flint, Ritchie and Collins. Crowd of 3’992 with 480 representing us.

And Finally –  Alfred Hitchcock was born at 517 High Road, Leytonstone, on 13th August 1899. To mark 100 years since his birth, and to commemorate the director's link with the area, 17 mosaics were installed in the entrance corridors of Leytonstone tube station. They were made in vitreous glass tesserae, using the reverse method, by Greenwich Mural Workshop. The work required some 80,000 tiles, took seven months to complete, and the final installation took place during April 2001. I bet those tiles have been pissed on by many a drunk cockney.

I'm going for a 3-0 scoreline to us. I think the lads will be frustrated after not playing again and PdC will ensure we come out the blocks fast (as he's said today). Goals from Williams, Ferry and Ritchie...crowd of 4182 with 471 from Swindon! Sadly can't make this due to work, but getting 3 points would be ace!

Nice one Rosso, 0-3 for me. Can't make it either start three day conference at the Belfry Golf complex at lunchtime. For those of you with a penchant for whacking a ball with a stick in all weathers, finding it and whacking it again, I'll get nowhere within a decent drive to the first tee. Not high enough up the food chain for that and besides I cannot play without ploughing up the fairway, have to make use of the indoor leisure facilities instead, oh and the free bar......

Good work as always Shaw Rosso, becoming a key part of the matchday reading your Lonely Planet guide to League 1 grounds!

Should be a good turnout from our supporters tonight, no reason we can't turn Orient over but I'd take a draw to be honest. As long as it isn't as bad as last time we played there...

First away game of the season for me.  Cautiously optimistic.  Having said that, the last time I showed up at Brisbane Road, the team didn't.  Three down by half time, and in the relegation zone by the end of the game.  I'm taking nothing for granted.

Love their ground, by the way.  I think it's my 3rd or 4th visit.  The way they have filled in the corners with the flats gives it an enclosed feeling that definitely helps the atmosphere.

Good stuff SR, Happy birthday Cibocchi. Difficult one to call this. The break we've had would of recharged the batteries but hope it hasn't effected the momentum  we were building up. Looks like Lisbie is out injured but Mooney is a threat so hope he has an off night. Going for a 2-1 win with Williams and Collins with our goals.

Expect a struggle on a muddy pitch, so 1-1

I drove there on Boxing day when Wilson was announced.  No problem parking on the road 5 minutes from the ground.

That day I remember a guy stood on the balcony of the flats with a can of beer, looked like Grant Mitchell.  He was joining in with the banter.  I did hear that a number of the players stay in the flats that are owned by the club/chairman.

Hopefully Cuthbert will have a game like his debut for us tonight.

Wasn't that his favoured position at Celtic before he went on loan to St Mirren? he doesnt strike me as being a natural RB partly due to his size and lack of mobility.

No concern in that for me. Rarely does an acquisition go completely smoothly. I've seen some comical tactics on far larger processes than this. In any event, Black has zero incentive to say it is going well (says to bidders that they're being soft), and every incentive to say it's fragile (suggests som remaining issues are deal breakers, regardless of whether they really are.)

A point's a point, but that was frustrating.  Rarely have I seen us dominate for such long periods without scoring.  McCormack was a rock; linked very effectively with De Vita.  Disappointed with Williams tonight.  And Gary Roberts...what can I say?  Something not right there.  Looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights.  Hope he sorts himself out soon.

The PDC rant:
- If you don't put in quality you dont score
- Very disappointed
- Step backwards w/r/t desire shown
- We weren't effective. Too much tippy-tappy
- Looked like we were in the beginning of the year
- If it hadn't been for Wes we would have lost
- Disappointed with several players. He will talk to them later
- Collins, Williams and Martin all went blurry infront of goals
- The subs were very bad
- PDC blames himself for their poor performance
- Will make his decision on whether to stretch squad or drop people in favour of youngsters
- Not a dangerous situation but he smells something he doesnt like. Would prefer to play players with desire. Some individual situations that he doesnt like.
- Too angry to say which players he might bring in
- Thanks to Wes tonight.
- For a group of players who say they can push on this was unacceptable
- Devera re occurrence of hamstring
- Happy with Miller, Ferry, Ritchie and McCormack
- Doesnt know anything new about take over. Going to get on the coach and find out
- PDC always positive, but is negative now because he is angry at performance
- Needs to know which direction he has to run with with the club
- Would like to keep the feel good factor in the club where fans travel and can celebrate
- Thinks he can get players in before windows close
- Have to make sure that we have competition for places. Needs more cover at the back. Wasn't happy with the way Flint played
- Talked about possibility of 2 or 3 new players
- Before Crawley we will know much more
- Main priority to give stability to the club

Cheers NOMORE HEROES, appreciated. Did Paolo seem happily accepting of the point, the tone of his voice?
Bloody Hell ! You want voice intonation as well!!!!!

He was trying to be very calm and careful with what he said. He was adamant that he wanted to address his issues with the players rather than over the radio. However, just like Radio Luxembourg in the old days, his voice got louder and words quicker as he tried to contain his anger. He let slip little bits about not being happy with Roberts, Flint, Martin and Collins. He excused Williams and praised Fodderingham, Ferry, McCormack, Miller & Ritchie. The others he didn't mention.

He was very careful about discussing the take over. He said that there was a possibility to bring in players because of freeing up wages with Benson moving to Chelters. However, he was careful to say that there are a number of different scenarios that could play out. When pressed about whether he could move quickly enough to bring in players, he was adamant that he could potentially get 2 or 3.

So, in conclusion, he was very controlled and circumspect in his interview. You could tell he was disappointed, but he didn't rant.

Cheers NOMORE HEROES, appreciated. Did Paolo seem happily accepting of the point, the tone of his voice?
IMO He sounded totally pissed off and fed up but was attempting not to let that come through.

I think it's a good point, all be it disappointing we didn't win, but positives include a clean sheet, a point, 8 games unbeaten and back up to 3rd after 10 days without a game. nearly 800 in support is fantastic on a Tuesday night over in East London! Onwards to Crawley!

Awful game. Pitch was rubbish and conditions just as bad.

We were better team, although wes saved us at the end.

Brilliant turnout from town fans.

Happy with a point, roll on Crawley!

Good support. Pitch was shocking and got worse throughout the match. Also a steady drizzle and a swirling blustery wind. It Hampered our slick passing. Martin and Roberts seem to dither too much. Great save by Wes. All in all a reasonable point.

Agree with the above apart from Leyton Orient being a good side.  For the majority of the game they were shit and quite happily playing for a 0-0 draw.

The pitch was dreadful and affected the game, but poor finishing and indecisiveness has cost us all 3 points tonight.  Very frustrating considering the amount of possession we had, but it was one of those games where if we were still playing now we wouldn't have scored.

Superb save from Wes at the end.  I was certain it was in, which would have been very harsh on it.

Not sure why Di Canio is unhappy with Flint.  I thought he was solid and can't remember him doing anything wrong unlike Roberts and Martin.  Can anyone else who was there enlighten me?

Macca MOM, forgot how shit orients ground is, well the away end anyway, I would hope the home fans have better facilities and seats. Awful conditions so 10/10 for the lads as they all put in 100% effort, and we were by far the better side, so not sure why some were critiscised, even Roberts , as he was a bit ropey, but It cant have been easy coming on in those crap conditions, and awful pitch. Some old Orient fan tried to stutter to me that the ref was an awayer and we were dirty! No mate you were crap I'm afraid, and diving crap at that.

Disappointing but onwards and upwards, honestly didn't think anyone who started had a bad game with the exception of the strikers who it just wasn't their day.

Oh and Gary Roberts the way to getting fans on your side is not to storm off straight down the tunnel without acknowledging them after coming on and playing like a useless bag of shite for 15 minutes and doing nothing but giving the ball away. Cunt.

I quite enjoyed the evening at Orient. A good following from the Town. My boy kept himself entertained by playing footy with a bottle down the bottom all evening. Chris Martin isn't a footballer is he? He looks to posh. Rather slow and very clumsy. The town going forward looked quite poor last night. Defence wise the Town are rather solid.
I think the reason Crawley called the game of was so that the pitch will be playable saturday and they get the money from Sky

Thought we did well considering the conditions. Impossible to play any sort of football on that surface. McCormack, Ritchie and Thompson impressed particularly.

We've had a few games like that this season, all the play and a host of chances but we do seem to have the odd off day in front of goal - last night was one of them.

Still unbeaten in 8, another clean sheet and an away point. Hopefully Crawley can get the game on for Saturday and we can pick up our second contracted 3-0 win against them this year.

Don't think Orient touched the ball for the first half an hour last night. Constant pressure from us, and Wes must have been bored stiff. Sadly we didn't really create anything out of it. Lots of balls into the box, a few long range efforts, and one chance where Ritchie didn't catch his shot right from a good position. We were playing decent footy given the conditions, and their only outlet was their right winger.

Having got through that period, Orient got into the game a little more, but looked no more likely to score than ourselves. Blatant dive from their bloke just before half time - I still don't know how he got away without a booking. Their penalty shout in the second half looked a lot more like a foul, though I think it happened just outside the box, so would only have been a free kick.

Our only chances of note were the aforementioned Ritchie effort, Collins' weak glanced header, a mix up at the back post, Williams' effort that hit the post, and McCormack's effort from 30+ yards... what a goal that would have been!

Overall, 0-0 was a fair result. I thought we had the better of the game but really didn't look good enough up front to merit all three points. Great save from Wes at the end when they loked certain to score - it would have been harsh on us. Thompson and Macca played well, the latter even more so after getting away with a comical obstruction which angered the home fans no end!

On reflection we should have made the most of the opening period, not just because we were in the ascendancy but because the pitch really seemed to deteriorate after that and our normal passing game was somewhat nulled.

Thought Thompson was pretty decent last night, really coming on well. Roberts looks shocked to bits, almost as if he was scared to take on his defender. Fair play to D'urso for booking their winger for diving. All in all take a draw at the start but one of those where with the chances we should of nicked.

Even Barca would have had difficulty playing on that excuse for a Football League pitch!

According to the stats they had three shots on target whereas I can only recall Wes's superb save which I thought was in. A goal then would have been very hard to take as Orient offered very little in the way of football but the longer it went on with the wind behind them there was always going to be an opportunity or two and tbh we did not look like scoring on the night.

That is two visits for me at Orient to watch the Town and three for my son and we have not seen us score yet - do not think I shall ever bother again to go to that poxy part of London.

Retrospectively I think we would have won if the starting 11 had been the finishing 11 but can understand the substitution of Collins who,I thought was very lazy(delusions of championship?) just unfortunate that Martin was even worse.Williams,as ever, gave everything but had a bad night.Ward,McCormack,brilliant.Ferry and Miller(who had his best game Ive seen in a Town shirt) totally dominated the middle of the park.Thought we played the best football and it was a game we should have won but could easily have lost.Shocking headed misses by Collins,Williams and Ward, superb long range effort from Alan Mac and Williams'deflected effort onto the post rebounded very kindly for Orient.Have to say I was crapping myself when No7 went down in the box.Difficult to see from our patch but it looked a pen to me.I really think De Vita for Roberts was a poor decision.Surprised Wes hasn't attracted any interest from the chamionship-he is becoming one of our best ever keepers.Great turnout people!

"Pantomime villain... Paolo Di Canio, whose relentless stream-of-consciousness ranting and pantomime preening really was something to behold. Most of it was directed at assistant manager Fabrizio Piccareta, who during matches must feel like a babysitter charged with trying to control an attention-deficient toddler who's just mainlined three litres of Sunny Delight and decided to single-handedly re-enact every scene from Annie the Musical."

that's a remarkably accurate depiction of Paolo during matches.

Piccareta deserves some kind of recognition for managing to keep a straight face

We shit all over them in the first half with Ritchie playing really well. The second was a bit more even but we created our best chances in this half. the free kick from Ritchie that Collins should have buried was an absolute beauty. Williams gave his all but was never going to score. Fantastic save by Wes who really is a very speacial keeper - pretty much fuck all to do and then he goes and pulls off a save like that. Comedy moment had to be Macca checking their player as Raffa went on a run right by us.
i'm not sure why Flint came in for stick. there was a moment in the last minute where he nearly fucked up badly....but didn;t. A bit unfair I think.
If one player deserved a bucket full of shit last night then its our old friend Roberts. He's go fresh legs and he's up against a fucking awaful centre half playing right back. The two attemspts he made to go past him were comical. Apart from the lack of dirt on his kit, you'd have thought he'd already put in a 75 minute shift. His decision making is fucking woeful and the effort he put in last night was even worse. Not quite as bad as Stabber Ashikode the time he came on as a sub and was subbed but Roberts was fucking shit and if we could offload, I would.
I didn't notice that he'd fucked off down the tunnel so quickly but that would have been the only time he ran past an Orient player.

Highlights now on Sky, if anyone's still interested on the small portion of football that is played on the pitch. Wes's late save didn't look as much of a worldy as it's been described on here, while you wonder how Williams and Collins failed to score.
