I didnt think you were allowed in diggers unless you were 14.  Many memories of my youth failing to kop off in diggers.  I think I probably went home and wrote bad poetry about it.

They were the classic knuckledragging 'no trainers' gorrilas dressed in tuxes.  I remember them letting me, a 6ft 3 big bloke wearing brogues in but knocking back a skinny 5 ft 2 girl in pumps who was with us.

Hard to call a winner in this game, depends on if we play a full 1st team what with us playing it Hereford on Friday night, I recon a mix of first teamers and fringe players is the order of the day.

If Aldershit play their 1st team they are very capable of beating us if 1. we are not playing the full first team and 2. if we arent up for it, which in recent years we certainly have not been!

2,200 crowd 200 Swindon fans and a 2-1 defeat AET. 1-1 full time with Cox being rested and Marshall playing from the outset. Paynter scoring our goal.

P Smith

Amankwah
Morrison
Kanyuka
Casal

McGovern (on the left)
Easton
Timlin
Marshall

Paynter
Peacock

First game I've missed this season but no too fussed really.......can still get radio Swindon in Tewkesbury so can listen to the match (Good riddance Brunel).

Hopefully we keep a clean sheet tonight so Aljofree doesn't need to come back in on Friday (no scapegoat just don't think he is a) very good or b) a leader). Still interested about who is captain tonight? as they'd likely always be when Aljofree aint there.

Good good 1-0 (Cox I think) hopefully tonight doesn't take much out of them as despite being away we've got to be looking for a win on Friday.

He was quoted on three sites at 50/1, every time I tried to back him they wouldn't accept the bet. There is no way he was ever 66/1 end of. I settled for 33/1

Now tell the truth, you have not got 66/1 unless of course it is for 50 pence.

At the end of the day our defense appears to have no organisation and needs sorting out as it is has more holes than the average collinder.......you'd think with Malpas, Williams etc all having been defenders they might have sorted it by now.

I'm not going to argue with you on this one because it'll be a waste of both our time! Panic if/when we lose to Hereford, not for a tinpot competition where the winners a few years ago lost money by winning the competition (Swansea I believe), a moral boosting cup run would be great but we'd still moan.

It's been a very long time since we've had a side that you'd feel any confidence about winning a game like this...certainly our current team doesn't have a hard to beat look about it.

The mere sight of JPM playing in centre mid, should be enough to tell you there's trouble ahead.

But we defied the rules too - a local lad scored in sudden death and a normally goal shy centre back got one too!

That Bormuff game was ace...it was about 10:30 0n the Stratton bank clock when Charlie Henry put in the winner and the CG was covered in a white hoar frost....still had winters back then....I was safely in the warmth of the pub, fucking hate extra time and the pubs closedd at 10:30 mid week back then  >:(

I know it's Micky Mouse and that, but winning this shoot out I'm sure will give the players a bit of a lift....MM said that they were taking it seriously...despite apparently being cack, going out would have been damaging.

Paynters pen was a little relaxed but it was fairly close to the corner so the keeper had to get down well to get it...

not that an exciting performance as mr malpas said, looked a little lost at times...thought for spels we looked good followed by spells of shitness....

right im normally a pretty sensible poster when it come s to reviewing games but im sorry to say this but i hope lee peacock never starts another game for swindon, he was a fucking liability tonight he had two chances on a plate and fucked them both through lack of control. he was 2 yards off the pace and when paynter came on we came alive as we had a fucking target man who could hold on to the ball.

Plus ifil was fucking hopeless, totally lost and for there first goal it was almost like he couldnt be arsed. A really crap team performance against a poor team who made us look ordinary. we were very lucky.

Title: Re: Aldershot Matchday Thread.
Post by: suttonred on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 22:22:37
Well that was interesting, got there  at 7.44 to find around 150 town fans still queueing and only one turnstile open, so missed first 10 mins. Also missed the penalty queueing for a coffee! Quick summary, overall it was pretty even, couldn't have complained if they won. Good atmosphere, I reckon 5-600 townies, their fans were pretty loud 2nd half. Cox and Ifil were probably our best two, and Smith made a cracking double save first half. Macca was pretty anonymous, marshall came on again and showed him how to do it. Time to throw him in at the start to see if he can do it for 90. JPM wasn't good, and Peacock was dross, missed 3 good chances by being to slow to shoot. All in all a good £12 spent even if i only saw 70 mins.

Comedy thread, just been reading it all back!

I was utter gash on the radio. Good fun, so hard not to swear.

All in all, it wasn't all bad:

Good
1. All our penalties, even Paynter's was decent
2. Easton, looked good in the middle
3. Smiths: Phil and Jack both awesome
4. Cox, little service, still scored and could have had two more
5. Marshall: really, really played well when he came on.
6. Awesome old-school ground, and parked right outside!
7. Ed Hadwin - he's awesome at the whole commentary thing
8. Peacock's head band after he cut hi head
9. Best chips in the league. Fact.
10. My old man sneaking in for free.

Bad:
1. McNamee: hello, anybody there? No? Ed and I decided we should drop him for away games!
2. Playing JP in middle, easton on right. Terrible decision. Doesn't work. Stop it.
3. Back four looked dodgy. All played ok, part from wankwaah, but not together. No cohesion or owt.
4. Wankwaah: great penno, but jesus - he gave their left winger so much time and space, he was generally terrible. Made one ace sliding tackle which almost got me out of my seat until I realised I had loads of radio cables around them.
5. Timlin, not at his best, quite lairy
6. Peaock, looked off the pace and looked lost in attack.
7. Got a cold.

That is all I have to say on this matter,

Title: Re: Aldershot Matchday Thread.
Post by: mexico red on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 22:28:05
i stood behing goal for first half and yes it was him, second half i went and sat in seats, ifil's positioning was laughable he was 2 yards in front of the other 3 defenders and kept trying to get offside, he was wandering all over the shop, and i havent mentioned the fucking penalty he gave away. thank fuck he scored.

and dont get me started on peacock, sturrock would be a better option than that useless cunt.

Title: Re: Aldershot Matchday Thread.
Post by: juddie on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 22:34:56
I don't th9nk peacoj knows how to play up front anymore.

I thought paynter was mint when he came on.

Ifil, not his best game, but he was better thank amankwaah. I had my head in my hands when he took his penalty, but it was a goodun! Smith was the only defender to come out of tonight's game with any credit.

There centre forward was good though, they're a decent side...

Post by: Batch on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 22:37:28
Same old same old for most of the match, an inability to impose in midfield and desperate defending at times, but with Cox working hard and Peacock doing OK as support. McNamee double marked and ot the game as we failed to get the ball to him.

The changes in midfield (Marshall and Allen) sorted our 'shape' out, the midfield and defence started to do their jobs and we got hold of the game. Would have won in normal time had Peacock not missed two sitters.

But we are through. That's what counts.

Post by: mexico red on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 22:38:45
it was atoss up between paynter and marshall for man of the match and they only played about 10 minutes. easton was all right, jack and phil  smith were ok, cox scored and set up peacock a couple of times the rest were fucking shit.

Sort of agree - it could have gone either way, but I would hardly call us a "poor" side (as one of you mentioned).

Two episodes of "lack of ability to defend" cost us dear tonight - especially for the first goal, the second one we simply gave your player enough time to control the ball, look up, pick his spot and whack it in which is a pain considering how many players we had back at the time.

Penalties can go either way so wasn't upset to go out to them, but we really should have finished you off sooner - but it wasn't to be.

I know some of you have said that you missed two sitters, but on the opposite side, we missed a fair few and Smith made one or two half decent saves too.

On a positive note, it was nice to see that you had fewer fans than Bradford at the weekend, but made twice the noise (which is strange because I was at the Blackpool v Swindon game a few seasons back where Town filled the whole side of that ground and didn't make a sound!)

Best of luck in the next round though, it's been a fun evening.

Sounds like i missed all jerel's bad bits. I'm off for an eye test tomorrow. Shots site is saying 385 from swindon. That has to be wrong, unless they got the figure at kickoff when there were still loads of us outside?

Just seen the goals on SSN.

Comedy defending. Kanyuka, Peacock both missed the first header. Amankwaah got the second one but headed straight up. McGovern wasnt tight enough to the man who crossed it back in and Ifil seemed to just stand there.

As for the penalty, clumsy but where was the right back no where to be seen.

We've finally got a black player who can do some fancy flips

As well as sorting out the defending of set pieces, we really need someone who can get 20-25 yrd free kicks on target, what was it another 3 or 4 tonight, and not one went close or beat the wall.

Most has been said already but all in all, we looked unimpressive. We still look worrying at the back. It seems like the two full backs are too narrow, possibly covering for the centre halves, giving their wingers all the time in the world and we still cant defend set pieces properly!

Cox played well and P Smith was good, Marshall and BP improved us when they came on and we could have nicked it in the last 5.

Finally, that end is immense and we should build one exactly the same

Glad I went! The football on offer wasn't the best, but the atmosphere great. A real old school ground, give me a choice over that and Stadium MK and I'd choose Aldershot every time.

Won't go into individual players performances, but as a team we're not clicking. There were some passages of play that showed glimpses of the side we could be: neat interpassing and good link ups, but on the whole it was a poor performance.

But who gives a fuck? WE WON A PENALTY SHOOTOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ground if it had another stand would be a tidy little ground to be fair, Most of the stuff about the game has already been said,

The away area shared with the home fans has excellent acoustics for sound to carry. No problems at the ground, the la fontaine pub was nice enough.

Poor performance in all and hope the pens were not used to gloss over the fact we are dreadful defensively.

Im really worried about our defence as were a thrashing waiting to happen.

On the postive, thought Cox played well as usual, Marshall looked very good when he came on and I think we could see him closer to the first team on a regular basis than first thought.  We missed Paynter up top, Peacock was useless, Ifil a shambles and Kanyuka didn't seem to have a clue in general.

Easton should be one of the first names on the team sheet in future also.

J Smith I think did ok, as did Phil Smith.

Part of the problem with the defence is, it's never the same 5, usually due to injury. what we need is a run of games with the same players, question is which 5?

Does the wee ground still have that HUGE trawler net behind one of the goals to stop the ball going on the road?

Don't recall seeing it, but it must have.

What it does have is a port-a-cabin bogs. 2 urinals, 2 cubicles. good job I wasn't busting for a piss or anything.

Its a right old mouthfull that, though. We also managed to change a later cry of 'Fittons red and white army' to 'Malpas'. Sort of. Some of those lads last night weren't putting much thought into their songs.

What was the score?

We got the result and we are in the hat on Saturday.......but it was poor.
We only really started playing in the last 15 minutes and could of snatched it at the death but for Eastons miss.
Problem: Defence is poor......no shortage of blood and guts tackles and commited headers but clueless distribution and no game plan..........we hoofed when we should of passed and dallied when it should of gone into row F (Aldershot do not have a row Z).
Aldershot were good value for their part and will feel hard done by no doubt, dangerous going forward but luckily for us they tired in the final third.
Paynters inclusion was decisive and although his pen was saved his aerial power caused the Shots problems....
We have an International standard defender as manager and an experienced defensive coach....but we are still seeing the same schoolboy errors week after week!!???

I went to Slad once, and recognised Laurie Lee's house purely from the description he gave in the book.  True story.

I also went for a pint in the Woolpack.  There was an old local fella in there who, quite rightly, sussed me for the sad literary tourist I was.

It was probably Laurie Lee, who was given to taking the piss out of tourists.

I've only really used the Woolpack for quizzes....the team based there moved along to Rod Thomas's Foston's Ash, so haven't been in a while.

JFW - go out and buy 'Cider with Rosie' by Laurie Lee.  It's a right rivetting read, seriously.  Laurie Lee grew up near Stroud in the 1920s & 1930s and the book is an autobiographical account of his childhood and vividly describes how rural Gloucestershire was changing at that time (advent of the motor car etc.)

If I've made it sound boring, I apologise, because it's a great book.

He wrote two further autobiographies.  As a young man he went to Spain and 'As I Walked out One Midsummer Morning' describes his travels there (on foot).  Also a great read.  He then returned and fought on the side of the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, which he describes in 'A Moment of War', which he wrote much later and is (understandably) a lot heavier.

I enjoyed the drumming :-[ Sounded as if the bloke playing it could actually play it and wasn't some 15 year old desperate for attention. And big up the Aldershot Shout chant too, nothing like a Lulu homage at a football match  8)
