Can't help feeling it of smacks of desperation. The bloke hasn't done anything for at least 5 years.

That's why it's just a trial and we haven't actually signed him.
If he doesn't impress he won't be signing.

He was a good little player a few years ago, if he can find that sort of form again he could be a huge asset in League Two.

Di Canio might just be the right person to get the best out of him.

Or it could be a complete disaster and them ending up having a punch up.

ha ha, where you been Bart?!

priceless.

I hate Knight. One of the biggest cnuts to walk the planet. But I hated him because he was good. If PDC can get goals out of him then he could be worth a punt. My only hope would be we'd get him on a short-term deal or performance-related deal, which is all he deserves.

Hopefully he has hit rock bottom and realised that he has wasted what could have been a half decent career.
If he did get a contract here it would be us doing him a favour and not vice versa, Hopefully he realises he is in the last chance saloon

f f s. he's had about 10 second chances in his career. And wasted them all.

I hoped we'd have more of a plan than to rely on Leon fucking knight.

yes its only a trial. I expect him to do well and be on best behaviour for that.  its the baggage that comes later.

My feelings on Knight are strong. He's a waster. I'm surprised he is even on our radar. I'll leave it there.

Would be interested to see the 'get out' clauses we put into his contract if we do offer him one...

"If you are a cunt, or act in a cuntish manner, we have the right to terminate your contract with imediate effect with no compensation"

Would be the first paragraph....

The passage of time does strange things to people.  If you had a time machine, went back 7 or 8 years and announced to the Town End that we were keeping tabbs on Leon Knight in 2011, you'd have started a riot.

We'll be having a look at John McGinlay next.

This. I will give him a chance if he ends up signing, but I do wonder how many of his goals were penalties, because I know that the season he finished L1's top scorer at Brighton, or near as top, most (15 from recollection) of his 29 goals (I think) were penalties.

Christ, Brighton don't even like the bloke and he was at his best there and should have a similar place in fans hearts to Parkin's here.

It's PdC's shout. If the little cunt impresses and is offered a deal then it's up to the manager to keep him in line.

If he does sign and is successful, all the people complaining now will be happy. Won't they?

Most footballers are egotistical wankers, he may be more of a wanker than most but I'm not really interested in what he says on twitter, I'm more interested in how he plays football.

I hated him when he played against us, but then I usually hate players who are good against us!

I don't think anyone is disagreeing how much of a cnut this bloke is Ardiles, but like PDC's political beliefs I'm willing to put that to one side if he does a job on the pitch. I don't want to be his mate, I want us to get out of League 2. I wouldn't even consider him in L1, but L2? Maybe...

If we do sign him, Watkins et al should ban him from twitter because he's a liability. He makes Simon Ferry look like mother theresa.

Feel free to put me in my place when he's been found getting smashed on a Friday night, fighting with our own fans, calling us all cnuts on twitter or showing us how much we're paying him and having love children with Douglas' missus.

That's a co-incidence. So is Di Canio...

If we were to sign him then of course I wouldn't be on his back. STFC is more important than that.

To clarify its not (just) the fact he's a cock that worries me, it whether the disrupts the team or strops off at a crucial point in the season. Its all well and good saying "sack him" at that point. But its not easy to get a replacement in a later date if we do (a la Austin this season).

This just reminded me of Fast Show, the two blokes in the pub.

I've heard plenty of stories about what he got up to off the pitch even when doing well at Brighton. Not (m)any are good.

However, IF he is as good as his word and wants to actually show his ability his finishing is way beyond League Two standard. I could just never decide if he was just some sort of loveable but naughty kid who could be kept in line with the right man in charge. He seemed to do ok under Lou Macari of all people at Huddersfield, who I can't see tolerating much.

If you do think he's just a gobby moron he does have a large tattoo of Che Guevara, which at least means he reads and thinks a bit outside football.

On a wider note, I want someone to ask Jeremy Wray about why we have suddenly become so close to one agency, why that one etc? Answers please.

Macari certainly didn't rate his attitude when he spoke at the Trust auction a few years ago. He did say he had a lot of talent, which I think we all pretty much agree on.

Good one Bart. Original, thoughtful, sensible post.

Leon Knight is going to be like marmite. Some will give him a chance but others won't, that's just the way it is - it'd be boring if we all thought the same. He's made his bed with his behaviour in the past and he'll have to lie in it.

I will say this, though: ignoring the fact that he is a wanker, which is not up for dispute, isn't it a teeny bit ironic for people slating Knight for being a disruptive influence when that was exactly what Dougie was last season?

Dougie is a superb player, no question, but there is no doubt his captaincy was a failure of huge proportions.

discuss.

Would you still be laughing at them if he scored against us? He does seem to have a knack of putting the ball in the net after all.

For the record, I'm a bit wary of it myself. but can see absolutely fuck all wrong with giving him a trial to check where his attitude is.

he scored 12 in 22 last year.

There's no denying the lad can hot the back of the net, it's his attitude in question.

We are taking him on trial to see of his attitude really is fixed after he's had a kid and stuff. If he's still a complete tosser then bye bye. If he's not such a knob then we've got a goal scorer.

What's wrong with that.

yes, he's a complete tool on twitter, and ferry hasn't been? i'm assuming the club would monitor his twitter behaviour, like they've promised to do with all players from now on.

Remind me what Sam Parkin's scoring record was like before he came here?

We know he can score in this league and higher...

If, and I'm playing devil's advocate, he doesn't mug fans off on twitter and he scores 25 goals this season. Then what?

Just sayin!

I hate him like the next man, but I'm just saying. Seems a bit extreme to write him off before he's kicked a ball.

Ferry is a funny guy these days, agreed, but you can't deny some of his early postings weren't, shall we say inappropriate! He's followed by loads of fans, young and old and he's only toned it down in the last few weeks cos he's had to.

And Spence, I don't think he'll ever change, but if he scores the goals that get us out of League Two, are we still bothered? I'm still debating in my head... I'm not saying I would like him whether he scored or not, I'm just putting it out there. If he were to score 30 and we finished top of the league, would we all be slating him still?

I'm not sure.

Leon Knight was on Soccer AM last year, and I wanted to punch the screen with him on it. I remember a few years ago when the Trust held a 'Lou Macari Night' at the Moonies. Which is something that he is known to do.

Don't know of that would be worth the possibility of pissing other players off though. Although Di Canio is clearly well aware of the risk.

I will say this, though: ignoring the fact that he is a wanker, which is not up for dispute, isn't it a teeny bit ironic for people slating Knight for being a disruptive influence when that was exactly what Dougie was last season?

discuss.

Which clubs have sacked Douglas in the past?
Has he ever been thrown off the team bus on the way to an away game?
Has a club ever sacked him and held onto his registration to stop him playing in England.

No.

Comparing the two is laughable.

Knight has been fined, sacked and god knows what else because of his behavior and most if not all past managers have had nothing but bad words to say about him. Douglas is just rumours that have little to no foundation what so ever.

Lou described him as one of the most talented individuals he'd seen for years, but with the worst attitude. That's probably why so many clubs kick him out !!

I was there as well. He said in all his years in football he had never seen a player with so much talent, but his deficiencies as a person meant he was never going to make it.

He will never change. The bloke is a moron. Whats all this comparing him to Douglas? Are you completely insane? Dougie was a good bloke.

As for 'Di Canio will sort him out', yeah right, some of the best managers in the football league tried to straighten him out, if he gets a contract, thats it.

Makes the club look a complete joke, even taking him on trial.

Why - we take a proven lower league striker on trial to see if we want to work with him - seems quite sensible to me...

He is utterly crap now, and always was a complete cunt.

10 goals in 22 games for Coleraine last season doesn't seem too crap to me.

For the record her is an arse (but them most footballers are), but reading on Twitter (so it must be true) couple of things...

1. One of the managers he fell out with was Mark McGhee - that makes him go up considerably in my opinion.
2. So he signed in Rushton on a 3 year deal who then transfer listed him 2 months later then sacked him 2 months later after 'breaches of contract' - how would you feel if you signed a 3 year contract and your employer then tried to offload you after 2 months and then sacked you - but then also went out of their way to stop you working anywhere else - you would be a bit pissed off I suspect.

I am not trying to defend the little git - he is no doubt a arrogant sod, but there are always two sides to any story.

Anyway he is only on trial - assuming he does well we will sign him, he will have a dust up with PdC and assuming they have got the contract right he will bugger off - if this can be after 15-20 goals for us that will do me.

I dont know? he might be - Southend are still on very dodgy footing financially and we could probably pay him more. Thats enough for most footballers these days.

He might cost a few quid compared to Knight but is younger and probably better. Would be a better investment.

Fair enough.  My badly made point was that I'm sure that the board and management know the names of these players - what we don't know is who is available and who is not.  I don't imagine, if they could keep hold of him, that Southend would want to lose Corr to another league 2 team.

What facts are they? Knight has been shit, I will have to bow down to your knowledge of this as I haven't been scouting the Irish leagues for the last season.

He's a twat - but he is an available twat whereas as far as we know (but again you have the 'facts' that i don't) Corr isn't - until we know better do we give a trial to the proven (albeit grade A arsehole) goalscorer or instead speculate about players we could sign.

No he has bought us Devera and Leon Knight on trial. Problem is one has loads of league 2 games and got voted player of the year twice so people were happy but now he has bought one on trial who people don't like they want to bring it up again

Signing Leon Knight may or may not be good for the club - that's for Mr Di Canio to decide.  One thing is for sure - it's given a shot in the arm to the TEF.  With this and fascist-gate, its been quite lively here recently.

Agreed and I do think it will be an interesting one to watch - could perhaps have a sweep on how long until they have a punch up!

Dunno.

Does he deal with the English lower leagues plus the Italian and Portuguese (and whatever)?

Doubt it

leefer's always on about McLeod.

He must have a thing for him.  :gay:
Ha, Knight no no! But McLeod? Bizarre.

I look at last seasons facts............Mcloud kept Barnet in the league scoring goals while Knight was playing part time in Ireland...........and 10 in 22 aint no great shakes in that league by the way.

Very Bizarre.

Barry Corr signed a 1 year deal at Southend on July the 8th 2010.

Is the Irish league really no better than D4 - I really don't know which is why I am asking people....

Not sure if I could stomach Knight and Mcloud though..... we will be signing Lee Hughes and Marlon King next

apart from being a cocky little fucker, what has Knight done to provoke such hatred from town fans?
I remember him being a lively little player with bags of talent. If he has grown up then he's worth a shot aint he?

I said weeks ago we should go after Fallon. I think he'd be perfect for us(reckon wages might be the stumbling block though)

Knight being a bit of a knobhead can't be compared to Hughes and King... can he?

If people hate Knight then it's down to his behaviour and not his playing ability... and that's fair enough.

Either way, it's just a trial.

Look i dont care if we get Fucking Laurel and Hardy on trial, why the fuck is a trial needed when he has been playing over ten years, its not like he is not known....unlike the Rizzer who is unknown to most like Dossevi and a trial warranted....so what is he on trial for...attitude, fitness goal scoring prowess....is a few mickey mouse games in Italy going to show anything we dont know.
My point is we should be looking at tried and tested scorers.....at least two come to that, the money raised from past sales should allow us to go out and spend a bit.
Instead of lining the pockets of has beens.......line the pockets of proven strikers.

Maybe a trial is needed to see how his game is now - its been a while since he played at this level.  By having him on trial we get a close look at his condition and ability - something Di Canio may not know that well anyway.  If it doesn't work out, we lose nothing.  What's the harm?

Don't snap at me leefer  :girlgiggle:

I'm not an advocate for Leon Knight... All I know is that he's here to prove himself after 2 years in the wilderness due to whatever happened at Rushden.

He's scored goals in FL and shows that despite being 'just' with Coleraine that he still knows how to do it. Dossevi has never been prolific.

We are clearly struggling to attract players, we're not the only ones.

The issue isn't what he can or can't do with a ball and a trial will not prove anything off the pitch. Maybe Di Canio will give him yet another chance which he may or may not chuck away. The guy is 28, not a youngster who can be taught. I guess the only slim chance he'd not play silly cunt in the dressing room is if he's finally realised his career is short and finite and he'll be a nobody in a few years time. If he's that desperate to play football he may calm down.

If he signs he will get his chance to prove himself without me slating him. My reservations about Di Canio have thus far been unfounded.

I think taking him away to Italy for a week (?) will probably give a good indication. You get to know people fairly well when you're with them 24/7. That week could make or break Knight's career.

Its a trifle odd because as people point out, there is along way to the start of the season. I read somewhere that Knight didn't want to go to Italy, and he had other offers. Now I think that this was from the football rumours website so probably BS, but it makes more sense!

Perhaps it was polite speak for his legs have gone.

I lean towards the notion that he's had a couple of years outside the football league and it's noticeable.

Nah. Makes perfect sense. A professional footballer would have a core fitness. Pre-season is just to get it back up to speed after a few weeks relaxing.

Knight hasn't been involved at any decent level for so long, he's obviously let himself go. A true professional with ambitions of getting back into league football would have been keeping his levels up.

You recon? :)

Ha touche. But nothing to do with my days right now so all I can do is prey for some interesting news or gossip about Swindon transfers. Keeping the faith that someone promising will be coming in soon though

He must be a country boy. Beef and hay, a very stable diet (pun intended)

The Knight naysayers can sleep easy tonight, then!

Damn right....I couldn't have watched a Town team, with that little shit defiling the shirt.

What about every wanker who has left who basically defecated on the shirt all last season!

All I can say, thank fuck it was only a trial and we turned him away. In retrospect many of the reactions (including my own) were just but far too OTT.

I like the way he mentioned a child had changed his attitude. :D

What an absolute dickhead the bloke is. His career is nearly over and he's ruined it because he's got a massive bag of chips on his shoulder. What a fat fucking waster. I know dole merchants with more promise.

I hope he doesn't find another club/manager to blame his bad luck on.

?

Spencer is suggesting that many of us were rejoicing such a signing. Whilst some of us (myself included) kindly reminded those who threw a fit that it was just a trial.

Title: Re: Leon Knight on trial with us

There were a few who were warm to the idea.

No, but we weren't all slitting our wrists because we had a player on trial.

"He's a cock. But he's scored a few goals and it's only a trial" was about warm as it got.

However

"Oh my fucking god, this is a joke. We are relying on Leon fucking Knight. This proves the agents are running everything. Oh my fucking god. The club is a fucking joke." Was the other side to the argument.

What - ever

Meh, maybe agent Darren told him he was a shoe in for Town and he burn his bridges at his former club. Actually I don't care if he did.
