Matt Smith to Wigan

Thought they were under an umbongo

He was a free agent.

Didn’t think they could sign anybody seeing as they can’t pay the players they’ve already got

If they don’t pay his wages, he becomes a free agent again then.

The rules do allow for "staffing up" so that every club has at least 23 players "of professional standing", which means they can sign loan players and non-contracted players once the transfer window opens next week.

Haven't Wigan been taken over now, one would assume as part of that people were paid and umbongo sorted?

Looking at some of the transfers, there definitely does appear to be a higher calibre of player going into non-league. I mean Nouble is a bit of a donkey, granted but you would imagine that some league 2 clubs might have been after his signature.

Raglan going to Oldham was a bit of a surprising one - there are plenty of Northern sides in league 2 who might have shown interest. Are non-league clubs starting to push out the boat financially a bit more to try and get back into league football? It suggests to me that non-league and league 2 are not that far apart anymore.

Am I right in thinking there's no financial fair play stuff for non-league? Obviously Wrexham are an exception, but they and Notts County were paying better than most L2 clubs last year right?

Two up/two down creates quite the logjam at the top end of the National League (and a fair size contingent at the bottom of L2 who they're better than).

That was the point I forgot to make. Yes, I think Non-league doesn't have FFP. I think there are clubs even lower down the pyramid making some incredibly impressive signings for their level. (I don't have anything specific to back that up)

It's all a bit of a nonsense at the moment, all NL teams are now pro I believe and most NLS/N ones are or are heading that way. The FL probably needs reorganisation to that effect, TBH the big jump between  leagues is now probably L!/Championship.
