Not necessarily true.

When MJ died, most people bought "The Essential Michael Jackson" or HIStory as it had all his greatest hits and not just a selection. I would say Thriller was boosted though by the 25th anniversary re-release of the album in 2008 and the subsequent announcement he was going to perform at the 02 prior to his death so everyone would have already had Thriller who wanted it before his death really.

ofcourse people will never really ever see sales like most of these albums again, now people can just download free off the internet etc. Surprised really no Eminem and no Christina Aguilera, 2-Pac or New Kids on the Block who I would consider bigger than say Usher on their day (not that I am a fan of any of those groups)although I guess as I just said due to the internet sales are likely a lot less as people could ahve downloaded most of their stuff (except NKOTB) free.
